Negative sign
In astrology, a negative, receptive, nocturnal, passive or feminine sign refers to any of the six even-numbered signs of the zodiac: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn or Pisces.
These signs constitute the earth and water triplicities. They are termed "negative" because they are supposed to be naturally less communicative, more receptive and more sensitive than the fire and air triplicities, known collectively as the positive signs. They prefer to draw upon personal resources to achieve their lives' goals and tend to be reserved, cautious and often retiring - in extreme cases standoffish. They are seen as likely to want and have only a small, but very loyal, group of acquaintances. They broadly match the introvert personality. They are sometimes termed "past-oriented" because it is supposed negative signs will focus on the past and be more resistant to change than positive signs. While it is true astrology certainly argues them to be generally more cautious about change, with the water signs this can be offset by their extremely compassionate nature.
In romantic relationships, positive signs are compatible with positive signs and negative signs with negative signs because of the similarities in their basic personalities and romantic needs. It is thought the gregarious nature of the positive signs is likely to be unacceptable both emotionally and physically to negative signs, while negative signs are seen as too boring, cautious or shy by positive signs, so in almost all cases a relationship between the two will lead to conflict that cannot be resolved.
Positive sign
In astrology, a positive, diurnal or masculine sign refers to any of the six odd-numbered signs of the zodiac: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius or Aquarius.
These signs constitute the fire and air triplicities. They are termed "positive" because they tend to be more communicative, buoyant and sociable - broadly matching the extrovert personality, aiming for a large number of friends and to focusing on working with them rather than on their own resources. However, positive polarity rarely displays the same senstivity or depth of understanding of emotional subtleties that is found in most negative signs. Positive signs are sometimes referred to as "future-oriented" because they are seen as less conservative and resistant to change than negative signs. Whilst they are often less interested in preserving the status quo than negative signs, in the case of the fire signs at least this is often opposed by the desire for power and prestige that is part of the character attributed to fire signs (especially Aries and Leo).
In romantic relationships, positive signs tend to be compatible with positive signs and negative signs with negative signs, because of the similarities in their basic personalities and romantic needs. It is thought that the gregarious nature of the positive signs is likely to be unacceptable both emotionally and physically to negative signs, whilst negative signs are seen as too boring, cautious or shy by positive signs, so that in almost all cases a relationship between the two will lead to conflict that cannot be resolved.
Triplicity
Fire - Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius - hot, dry, ardent
Earth - Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn - heavy, cold, dry
Air - Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius - light, hot, wet
Water - Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces - wet, soft, cold
Spring - Earth - Aries, Taurus, Gemini
Summer - Fire - Cancer, Leo, Virgo
Autumn - Air - Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius
Winter - Water - Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces
Fire
These signs are fiery, bright, ardent, enthusiastic, leaders, confident, proud, spontaneous, self-sufficient, and romantic.
They can be very arrogant, self-centered, bossy, forceful, and hungry for attention. These signs don't have time to sympathize and comfort others; they have no patience for emotionalism or heaviness. They also tend to take credit for things that others have also taken part in.
Earth
These signs are practical, stable, consistent, rigid, determined, dependable, patient, conservative, and sensual. They love material comforts and have good recuperative powers.
They can be dull and too materialistic.
Air
These signs can talk and communicate well; they tend to be intellectual, and they are able to handle abstract reasoning. They are logical, objective, talkative, social, spontaneous, flexible, cautious, idealistic, and unprejudiced.
They can be cold, superficial, and impractical. These signs fear something new and hunger for freedom.
Water
These signs are feeling, sustaining, and receptive. They are emotional, intuitive, responsive, sensitive, psychic, and deep. They tend to be susceptible to mood swings, and it takes a while to get to know them. They are also nurturing and base many actions they take on sense.
They can be self-protective and like to spoil themselves. If their emotions become too strong, these signs can become addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, or anything that keeps them from being overloaded. Along with their empathy, also comes a tendency to actually absorb the emotions of others.
Fixed Sign
Fixed Signs are at the height of the four seasons. Fixed Signs are associated with stamina, perseverance and strength and said to be, by nature, inert. However, they are also associated with inflexibility. Individuals born under the four Fixed Signs of the Zodiac are thought to be determined, powerful, natural leaders, purposeful, reliable, loyal and self-confident but also occasionally stubborn and immovable, with a tendency to get stuck in ruts. They supposedly pursue their goals with dogged persistence and have a great power of concentration. According to astrologers, Fixed Signs tend to direct their energies inward rather than outward.
Taurus: Being an Earth sign , Taurus is said to be the most stable, patient and determined of all the Fixed Quality Signs.
Leo: As a Fixed Fire sign, Leo individuals are said to burn with a greater intensity than the other two Fire Signs. They are supposedly much less impulsive than Aries natives and not as prone to "wanderlust" as Sagittarius subjects.
Scorpio: A Water sign, of the Fixed Quality, Scorpio is thought to deeply internalize emotions and pursue goals with keen insights, perception and much willpower.
Aquarius: An Air sign, while generally considered to be a spontaneous and erratic Sign, many astrologers also agree there is also a distinct lack of flexibility in Aquarius character due to their Fixed Quality.
Mutable sign
In astrology, the mutable signs (also called common signs or bicorporal or double-bodied signs) are a subgroup of the zodiac. They are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. The mutable signs straddle two temperate zone seasons, encompassing an inherent duality in its symbolism.
In the tropical zodiac, mutable signs coincide with the times of change in the seasons. They are associated with change and versatility. Individuals born under the four mutable quality signs are thought to be adaptable, impressionable, sharp, sympathetic, communicative, resourceful and restless, with a gift for seeing both sides of a situation at the same time and an immense desire for knowledge, variety and new ideas. They supposedly adapt very well to new situations, possess much flexibility, seldom have any particular agenda and are perfectly happy to fill in an assigned role. However, they are also said to be inconsistent, changeable, nervous, indecisive and irresponsible, with a tendency to get wrapped up in tiny particulars. There is also a certain duality associated with all the mutable quality signs.
Gemini: - between the spring and summer seasons. As an air sign of the mutable quality, Gemini individuals are said to have the best communication skills of all the signs of the Zodiac. Many astrologers also believe Gemini to be the sign in which the duality associated with the mutable quality is most clearly defined. Gemini, because its symbol is that of the twins, indicates an individual who quite often has a duality of purpose, feeling that he or she has two separate destinies that must be pursued before feeling fulfilled as a human being.
Virgo: - between the summer and autumn seasons. A mutable sign of the element of Earth, Virgo is strongly associated with precision, detail, research and the preservation of health. The mutable metaphor may seem to fall short when applied to Virgo, which does not appear to be a sign with much duality at all. This may be because it is viewed from a literal sense as "The Virgin" in the sense of having not actually had sexual intercourse, rather than in the sense of a Maiden; some one who is ready for sexual intercourse, adult romantic relationships, marriage etc. (relationships beyond the self being a core concern of the following sign Libra). Virgo is considered mutable because of their flexibility in filling for other people, their reliability, and ability to work and think in the spur of moment. Also, there is a distinct lack of stubbornness in virgo in comparison to the other earth signs. They are happy and can adapt well into most positions, without necessarily wanting leadership. As such Virgo represents an archetype of transition, and its bicorporal forms are based more on age/initiation rather than across species as per Sagittarius, or in two bodies or paths as with Pisces and Gemini; The Child/Adult; Innocence/Experience etc. Virgos are said to rule the earth best, with the most grace, as compared with the other mutable signs
Sagittarius: - between the autumn and winter seasons. A fiery mutable quality sign, Sagittarius is associated with travel and learning. Sagittarius is half-man, half-animal, although this definition tended to overlap into the areas of human signs vs. bestial signs. Nevertheless, Sagittarius' lofty and intellectual nature, deriving from its ruler, Jupiter, does co-exist with a Zeus-like moral short-sightedness when it comes to fidelity in relationships.
Pisces: - between the winter and spring seasons. Pisces individuals are said to express their mutable duality in an emotional manner characteristic of water signs, fluctuating from one emotional extreme to the other. The symbol of Pisces is that of two fish swimming in opposite currents to one another. Quite often individuals who are strongly influenced by Pisces feel a deep frustration in their lives because they are being pulled in two opposing directions at the same time. Some individuals will try to stick with one path and others will try to maintain both paths, which is often unrealistic. Others try to maintain one path, but periodically veer onto the other path.
Cardinal sign
In astrology, a cardinal sign (also called by older astrologers a moveable sign) is a sign of the zodiac that initiates a change of temperate zone season when the Sun makes its annual passage into them.
The word "cardinal" originates from the Latin word for "hinge," since they each mark the turning point of a temperate season. They were called moveable by traditional astrologers because, as Bonatti says, the "air" changes when the Sun enters each of these signs, bringing a change of season. For this reason, these signs are considered forceful and dynamic, initiating action and providing leadership.
However, on the other hand, cardinal signs can be inconsiderate, controlling, stubborn, selfish and demanding, as they feel their way is the best and what others should follow.
Sometimes the word cardinal is confused with the word angular. Angular signs are those signs which are located on the astrological angles of any given natal chart. Angular houses may be cardinal, fixed or mutable signs, depending on the birthtime of the chart, but only Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are cardinal signs.
Aries: the Sun's passage through which begins the spring in the northern hemisphere, and the autumn in the southern hemisphere; Aries (a Fire Sign) is said to be the Sign in which the Cardinal Quality is best-expressed since it is the first sign of the Zodiac and strongly associated with energy, enterprise and new beginnings. Aries is the most fiery of the fire signs
Cancer: which begins the summer in the northern hemisphere, and the winter in the southern hemisphere; In Cancer (a Water Sign) the Cardinal Quality is said to be most expressed in the desire to nurture, mother and protect.
Libra: which begins the autumn in the northern hemisphere, and the spring in the southern hemisphere; According to astrology, Libra individuals (associated with the element of Air) tend to express their authoritative Cardinal Quality in a subtle and charming fashion.
Capricorn: which begins the winter in the northern hemisphere, and the summer in the southern hemisphere. Being an Earth Sign, Capricorn is thought to have somewhat more perseverance than the other three Cardinal Signs.
