Guilty

The man who killed the TV anchorwoman in her own bed last year was found guilty of capital murder, rape, residential burglary, and theft of property this week. Tonight, the jury sentenced him to life without parole for the capital murder charge, a consecutive life term for the rape charge, and levied maximum fines for the burglary and theft charges. He was facing the death penalty, but the jury decided to spare his life. The victim's father made the statement that the convicted man will have to spend the rest of his life in a 6' x 9' cell, contemplating what he has done.

For more about the crime, the trial, and the sentencing, you can go to the home page of the TV station the victim, Anne Pressly, worked for. That website is http://www.katv.com/ . (For some reason, I'm unable to insert a hyperlink tonight.)

Lots of people are second-guessing the jury's sentencing decision. I'm not. Cameras were not allowed into the courtroom for this trial or the sentencing hearing, and I wasn't in the jury room during deliberations. Deciding whether a man lives or dies has got to be a very, very difficult thing to do, no matter what he has done. It's a hard thing to sit in judgment of someone else, when the walls that surround each of us are made of glass.

Someday, he'll face the ultimate Judge, as we all will.

I'm glad for the families that this trial is over. It's been very hard to see the people who knew, worked with, and loved Anne having to relive everything all over again. It was hard for everybody.

Maybe now they can find a way to go on.

Rest in peace, Anne.
