Memories

Davy Jones, singer, actor, member of the '60's quartet The Monkees, passed away this morning at the age of 66 at his home in Florida of a heart attack.

As a little girl back in the '60's, I had a tremendous crush on this man. I loved his accent, the way he sang, his corny acting, and his smile gave me the giggles. My very first true love. love Except that I sometimes would "choose" his friend Peter Tork as my boyfriend, because there were only three of us girls in my family and there were four Monkees, and Peter or Mike was usually left out when we played house and chose our "husbands."

lol

Such a simpler time. And that's what he represents to me, that simpler time and place.

May he rest in peace.

Sad to say, I never watched a single episode of the TV show, and know nothing of the actor. My heroes at the time were my boss, General Curtis LeMay, General John Ryan (three-finger Jack), and John Wayne, the draft-dodging actor who grew up surfing in Southern California. I also hero-worshiped Jimmy Stewart, the real-life Brigadier General who made the movie, 'Strategic Air Command'. Needless to say, I didn't watch TV much at all.....smile

We have a couple in common, there, David--John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. I cried at the deaths of both these men. It was almost like losing grandfathers.

sad

Hi Star, John Wayne--not so much; Jimmy Stewart--a real-life warrior! yes...so was Lee Marvin, and Mr. Rogers (both heavy combat veterans & heroes).

::Hands Dancer a hanky, too:: Just gave your sister one. I imagine women of your generation the world over are in mourning.

David...did you just forget General George Patton? confused

KimberlySqueakeyCat Thursday, March 1, 2012 8:06:03 AM

I also posted about it. At least you got a response out of it, Star...lol

Darkogdare Thursday, March 1, 2012 5:04:03 PM

Ok, it seems I am too young to remember this whistle

Stardancer Thursday, March 1, 2012 11:25:14 PM

David, Lee Marvin is one of my favorites, and my son grew up with Mr. Rogers. Considering his military background, it's amazing how comforting he was to children. An extraordinary man.

Thank you, Moon. Sis and I posted at almost the exact same moment. Same video, too! We didn't even collaborate on that.

lol

Stardancer Thursday, March 1, 2012 11:29:11 PM

You will, Kim. Just might take a bit.

What is your favorite Monkees song? Mine was "Shades of Gray," not one of their more well-known ones. I liked "Pleasant Valley Sunday," too. Their show was a hoot, wasn't it?

smile

Stardancer Thursday, March 1, 2012 11:30:17 PM

lol Darko. That's okay. You'll be seeing enough of the retrospectives in the coming days to figure it all out.

lol

DavidRavo Friday, March 2, 2012 12:14:33 AM

Hi Moon, Patten was a big bully and I wish we had him today in Afghanistan/Pakistan. The fighting would be finished in a week or two....yikes

MoontanMoontan01 Friday, March 2, 2012 1:14:25 AM

Amen to that, David. yes

Day Dream Believer (that was and still is me...lol)

Mr. Rogers was never in the military. That is an urban myth. He graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida (my alma mater) with a B.A. in music composition, then did his graduate and postgraduate work in Pennsylvania, I believe. He was an ordained minister who paid his way through college by working at a television station in Pittsburgh, I believe, which led to him having a wonderful children's program.

I liked the songs that Michael Nesmith sang lead on. It didn't happen often, but I liked 'em.

I only know that song "I'm a believer" by the Monkees, but dying at 66 is way too early!
May he rest in peace.

I agree, Kitty.

"I'm a Believer" was probably their most famous song. They had some funny ones, too. Cracked me up.

And you are right, early 60s and 50s were a much simpler time.

Stardancer Wednesday, March 7, 2012 5:22:16 AM

Hi, Linda!

I was talking to a friend of mine this afternoon, and she mentioned that Mr. Rogers was an ordained minister, too. I hadn't known that.

I do know that Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was one of the only kids' shows that I would let my son watch when he was little, without my being in the immediate vicinity. Most other shows were absolutely atrocious.

My sister had a crush on him too. bigsmile

I liked their show. It was off-the-wall fun. And I liked that movie they made -- surprisingly good. up

You know I was telling my mom just earlier today that in my 3 years at my high school I never saw one fight. Imagine that.

Stardancer Friday, March 16, 2012 7:40:06 PM

Not one? Wow. Seems there was a fight at least once a week in mine.

bigsmile

I remember that movie. Saw it not too long ago on TCM. The name of it is Head, I think, which was pretty appropriate. Just zany, but fun. Like a prolonged acid trip. A good one.

I loved those Monkee TV shows. It does seem like a simpler time, looking back! smile

Stardancer Tuesday, March 27, 2012 3:53:33 AM

I loved them, too, Richard. It had to be a simpler time, at least for us. Little kids with big dreams.

" My very first true love. " my eldest shares this sentiment with you. she 'fell in love' with Davy Jones watching Monkey reruns when she was 11... I thought, "uh-oh she doesn't get that this is Grandpa for her..." bigsmile guess she was convinced he could transform into his younger, dashing self again...

hearing of his death was a sad day in our house. he seemed to be a very nice man.
