New Weather Satellite

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=39848

We have a new weather satellite in orbit. The above photo is the first "full disk thermal image" from that satellite, acquired yesterday, 17 August 2009. The link below the photo will take you to NASA's Earth Observatory website, one of my favorite places on the internet, and will give you a much more detailed explanation of the features of the photo and the new satellite.

White House disables e-tip box
By MIKE ALLEN | 8/17/09 12:43 PM EDT.
POLITICO 44

Following a furor over how the data would be used, the White House has shut down an electronic tip box — flag@whitehouse.gov — that was set up to receive information on “fishy” claims about President Barack Obama’s health plan.

E-mails to that address now bounce back with the message: “The e-mail address you just sent a message to is no longer in service. We are now accepting your feedback about health insurance reform via http://www.whitehouse.gov/realitycheck.”

The “flag” service was introduced Aug. 4, with a White House blog post saying: “There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said at a briefing shortly after the service launched: “We're not collecting names from those e-mails. … All we're asking people to do is if they're confused about what health care reform is going to mean to them, we're happy to help clear that up for you. Nobody is keeping anybody's names.”

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, wrote a letter to Obama raising privacy concerns about what the senator called an “Obama monitoring program.”

“I can only imagine the level of justifiable outrage had your predecessor asked Americans to forward e-mails critical of his policies to the White House,” Cornyn wrote. “So I urge you to cease this program immediately.”

In a later statement, Cornyn said: “Of course the White House is collecting names. … It is inevitable. Anyone with access to the flag@whitehouse.gov account has access to the names and email addresses that are collected in that account. … How are they purging names and e-mail addresses from this account to protect privacy?”

White House will change e-mail rules
By MIKE ALLEN | 8/16/09 8:48 PM EDT.
POLITICO 44

The White House said Sunday night that it will change its e-mail sign-up procedures after some recipients of a health-care e-mail complained that they had not asked to receive updates.

“We are implementing measures to make subscribing to e-mails clearer, including preventing advocacy organizations from signing people up to our lists without their permission when they deliver petition signatures and other messages on individual’s behalf,” spokesman Nick Shapiro said in a statement Sunday night.

After a few such recipients appeared on Fox News, White House officials determined that advocacy groups on the right or left could have sent in the names without the person knowing it.

For instance, a group might have sent WhiteHouse.gov a comment from each person who had signed an online petition, and the White House would have captured the e-mail address.

FoxNews.com reported: “FOX News has offered the White House examples of what hundreds of people say were unsolicited e-mails.”

Shapiro said in the statement: “The White House e-mail list is made up of e-mail addresses obtained solely through the White House website. The White House doesn't purchase, upload or merge from any other list. … [A]ll e-mails come from the White House website as we have no interest in emailing anyone who does not want to receive an email.

“If an individual received the e-mail because someone else or a group signed them up or forwarded the e-mail, we hope they were not too inconvenienced. Further, we suggest that they unsubscribe from the list by clicking the link at the bottom of the e-mail or tell whomever forwarded it to them not to forward such information anymore.”

The complaints concerned a 1,500-word e-mail sent Thursday in the name of White House senior adviser David Axelrod, including “8 common myths about health insurance reform.” The e-mail mimicked the style of chain e-mails attacking President Barack Obama’s health-reform plan. The subject line: “Something worth forwarding.”

The White House had sent other e-mails to the list without complaint.

Fox News’ Major Garrett had a lengthy exchange about the matter with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs at the televised briefing on Thursday.

Garrett said: “[F]olks have emailed me … [who] would like to know how they get an e-mail from the White House when they have never asked for one.”

Gibbs replied: “I'd have to look and see.”

Later, when Gibbs was asked whether public opinion would influence the administration’s Afghanistan policy, he quipped: “We're e-mailing Major's list.”

Goodbye

Les Paul passed away today.

I don't think it's possible to overestimate the importance of this man's contributions to modern music and the recording industry. Without his inventions, there possibly would have been no Elvis, no Beatles, no Michael Jackson, no Motown, no Sun Records, no Nashville. At least, not in the same way in which we've had them.

What an amazing life.

What an amazing man.

Rest in peace.

I Am I Said

Playing Politics

The senators of Arkansas are not holding town hall meetings to answer questions about health care during their August break, so the Arkansas Republican party has decided to do so. The Democrats are now accusing the Republicans of "playing politics".

Let me get this straight.

When the Democrats hold these town hall meetings, it's out of, what? Concern? Respect? In the interest of delivering information to the people?

But when the Republicans do it, it's just "playing politics"?!

I am so sick of this.

The reason that people are protesting this health care "reform" stuff that's in Congress right now is because we don't like it. Not because there's some kind of conspiracy cooked up somewhere. And so what if the people get organized to oppose this legislation? That is what opposition does. It organizes, so that those who agree with its viewpoints have a way to voice their opinions. It is not un-American.

It. Is. Not. Un-American.

The president and those members of Congress who claim that it is are conveniently forgetting the liberal protests during the 1960's, in which many of them participated. Obama is a former community organizer, and understands this. He also understands that the only way he can even attempt to discredit these very American protests is to claim that they are spreading lies and misinformation, and being organized and funded by fanatical groups that pose a risk to America.

He is a community organizer who understands the warfare of community organizing.

By and large, the American Public is against this legislation, just like they were and are against the bailouts/stimulus packages and the unfettered spending of this Congress and this administration. We know that unprecedented tax hikes are coming: there is no other way to pay for this.

And we don't like it. Nobody asked our opinions. In cases where our opinions were known, our opinions were completely ignored and even called "stupid" and "uninformed".

Fine. If that's the way our Congress, President, lobbyists, and all those other idiots intend to operate, I have four little words for you:

You can be replaced.

And you will be if you continue with this course.

I just saw this commercial on television for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (which I lovelovelove), and almost fell out of my chair laughing.

Just wanted to share.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

Why Does This Sound So Familiar?

I read this today.

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.

Keep track of them? Casual conversation?

Our president is asking us to report opposition to his health care--uh, plan.

I seem to remember that there was another man that had people reporting on other people. And yes, I will say the name. Adolf Hitler. A lot of those who were reported on were subsequently forcibly transported to concentration camps and killed. Millions of them.

Well, here's one that can be reported. I don't like your plan, Mr. President. Not about health care. Not about the economy. Not about negotiations with terrorists. Not about turning my country into something unrecognizable.

What are you gonna do with me?

Invite me for a beer? Send me to prison?

What?!

The Greatest

Don't Laugh

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flQRf3rAr5k&feature=related

Every one of us has something we deal with that no one knows about. We struggle daily, some of us with heartbreaking disabilities that aren't visible.

  • Mental illness.
  • A past of severe emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuses.
  • Debillitating shyness and panic disorders.
  • Fears of everything and everybody.
  • Extreme stress.

One would actually have to get to know us to even know the disability exists.

Before you judge, before you ridicule, before you gossip, make sure you know what you're talking about.

Don't be a mean person. There are already too many of them.

Just a Little Rock'n'Roll

I can't believe I found this video on YouTube. This is one of my favorite songs from this band, from an album from wayyy back in the early- to mid-'80's. I used to crank this up when I was driving down the road in my T-top Camaro, singin' right along with 'em, at the the top of my lungs. A friend of mine, Rebecca, and I would go cruising up and down Main Street on Friday and Saturday nights, then stop at Burger King, check out the action :D, and head back out to see what trouble we could find.

Fortunately, we never found any.

But the soundtrack of those weekend nights was great!

Hope you enjoy it.
