How to use Hitslink

, , , ,

I heard that a lot of ppl is annoyed or confused by their brand-new Hitslink account.
So I’ve decided to do this “tutorial” which will guide the newcomers to get around. There are options which you have to pay for – so I will discuss only the “basic” version.
Always keep in mind – Hitslink is your friend. It may seem too complicate but it is easy as 1 2 3.

After you’ve set your profile you should first click on “Expand Menus” – so you will see what menus are available for you.

“Exclude IP Ranges from Tracking” and “Ignore This Browser” are pointless.
Since if you set an Excluded IP-range your statistics won’t cover reality…
Also ignoring your own Browser is pointless – why would I want to block my browser? Also if somebody does it – for probably no reason - in the second when he/she clears his/her cookies this will be reset to default…

Let’s look at the Traffic section!
First click on “Snapshot” You will see the last 25 visitors with their referrers. If you scroll down you can see your unique visitors and page views. (With their average numbers of course)
Also if somebody “Googled” you, you can see which browser / OS did he/she used.
The “client=firefox” means that the user used Firefox, if it is Opera then the user used Opera – and so on. :D
If you see nothing it is probably Internet Explorer 7… If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can hide either the Chart or the Table.

If you click on Top Pages you will see your most visited pages – Keep in mind that it will always show the “today’s” (The day when you watch it) page views. Also it gives a figure of it. If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can select from different types of diagrams, as well as you can hide either the Chart or the Table.

The “Top Pages Trend” is shows the most visited pages in a diagram. If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can select from different types of diagrams, as well as you can hide either the Chart or the Table.

The following options are trivial - (Page Views, Visitors, New Visitors, Average Page Views) – since you can see all of them if you click on either “Detailed” or “Detailed (All Periods)”
If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can select from different types of diagrams, as well as you can hide either the Chart or the Table.

The second option (“Detailed (All Periods)”) will show a 12 months statistic – with their diagrams - so use “Detailed” instead. If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can select from different types of diagrams, as well as you can hide either the Chart or the Table.

“Latest Visitors”, “Repeat Visitors”, “Countries” are trivial.
If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can select from different types of diagrams, as well as you can hide either the Chart or the Table.
Maybe Countries can be shocking – (It can hold many surprise. :D)

At the “Referrers” section you can watch where ppl came from.
If you move your mouse to Options (It is on the right side), you can select from different types of diagrams, as well as you can hide either the Chart or the Table.

If you click on “Referring Sites Detail”, it will show you the referrers.

If you click on Browser Share you can see what ppl are using worldwide.
Aww – come on… Use FF or Opera instead…

At “Browsers Trend” you can see the same – but in a diagram.

At “Search Engine Share” and “Search Engines Trend” you can do the same – but it shows you the used search engines worldwide.

And of course Operating System Share and Operating System Trend are the same – but with the used OS-s…

There is another option which is available everywhere. In the same line where your address is located in the right, you can see 4 icons – and an “export” option.
With the first, you can add the other statistic reports to the same page – so you won’t need to click to 4 or more different places.
If you want to remove the added ones you can do it by selecting “Remove from page” at the options menu.
The second is supposed to give you an xml based file – but it gives a plain-text file with everything…
The third option will give you a printable version of the report, and with the last one you can sent the report via e-mail.

The “Export to” option is the best thing in Hitslink – it makes a downloadable report from the page – you can select the following formats : Adobe PDF, Word / Excel for Windows , RTF (Rich Text Format) , Comma separated txt file, Tab delimited text, Word for Macintosh , or WordPerfect.

If you have a question feel free to contact me.

i'm still confused @_@ on what's hitslink.

pardon my noob-ness p:

Stomyr 9. August 2007, 11:14

Hitslink gives you real time reports and statistics of your page including : who visits your site, how they found you, and how they navigate your site.

If you have it you can log in if you click on “My account”, then scroll down and click on “Statistics”.
(If you don’t have you will see only a number there)

My page is also visited by IE users mostly. This is because most my visitors come from search results. My Opera sites has such a big pagerank that it's really not fair some times.

I think it was a mistake to disable the Opera banner in my sidebar. I didn't think most visitors used IE. Well. Time to enable it again.

Stomyr 23. August 2007, 15:57

Furie 23. August 2007, 20:21

Would you mind if I linked this post in the My Opera tutorials I've been posting? It'd fit in well.
:D

Stomyr 23. August 2007, 21:21

Where do you want to post the link ?

theoddbod 24. August 2007, 08:05

Mine was private until yesterday, when i changed it out of curiousity. It hasn't changed things as far as i can see, except that now it shows my pic next to my visits.

Stomyr 24. August 2007, 08:06

I will update this tutorial soon.

Dear friend, nice & helpful post!Is the serevice always free of charge for opera community members. It's said on the hitslink site it's free for 1 month only.

Stomyr 25. August 2007, 06:10

Thanks
Yep - and after it, the account costs 12$ / month. (If I remember correctly )

But you can upgrade it. :D

KYren 25. August 2007, 06:46

So I'll have to deactive my account after a month?

Stomyr 25. August 2007, 07:39

Well - if you wouldn't pay for it, it would be closed - XD

theoddbod 25. August 2007, 09:25

Now i'm confused - where does it say it ends after a month? I've had mine longer than that, and the first batch of people got Hitslink in January.

Furie 25. August 2007, 09:46

We get a mixed service. We can upgrade to a higher one if we wish, and that has a one month free trial. But what we get for our Opera accounts is free forever.

Stomyr 25. August 2007, 10:28

Yep - that is what I'm saying. :D

KYren 25. August 2007, 10:33

Thank you Stomyr & Furie, for clearing my doubts.

zoligrg89 3. September 2007, 16:44

Look what I found :
I a person gets to your site from google, you can see what browser was he/she browsing with , in the "Referred by" section :D
eg. I'm searching for "dark passion play" ->
http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=hu&q=dark+passion+play&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
or another similar example
http://www.google.hu/search?hl=hu&q=opera%20b%C3%B6ng%C3%A9sz%C5%91&btnG=Google%20keres%C3%A9s&meta=

Stomyr 3. September 2007, 17:06

It is already included.
You must have missed it. :D

KYren 3. September 2007, 20:56

What is the meaning of XD?

Stomyr 3. September 2007, 21:09

It became popular on the internet shortly after it was used in the television show, South Park, where this was used when a character was laughing so hard they had their eyes closed.

KYren 3. September 2007, 22:24

Is there any long form of XD? or the X in XD represents closed eyes while laughing?

Stomyr 3. September 2007, 22:25

Yep. :D

Stomyr 3. September 2007, 22:25

>< is another way

KYren 3. September 2007, 22:33

Thank you for answering my this question too?.My I ask you one more question? How to post a sticky post and can I post 3 sticky posts in my blog?

Stomyr 3. September 2007, 22:40

You can post as many sticky posts as you want - if you make more than one it will be sorted by their date.

When you post there is an “advanced options” click on that – and at the “Post settings” there is a “Show this as a sticky post” square – click on it

KYren 3. September 2007, 23:32

Can I convert my 3 recent posts into sticky posts?

Stomyr 4. September 2007, 06:46

Of course! Click on “Edit” then go to the “advanced options” and select "Show this as a sticky post”

KYren 4. September 2007, 16:45

I've set the three posts as sticky posts, thank you .I had to use opera 8.65 since the advanced settings options doesn't work on opera mini. But after a couple of hours when I tried to access my blog using OM the following message was shown for a few minutes "500 internal server error. The server monkeys made a horrible and un recoverable mistake...XWA:User:Friends died cant call method "do" on an undefined value at /usr/local/lib/site_perl/XWA/User/Friends.pm line 98." Now I can access my blog but can you please tell me what's the meaning of the error message.Get well soon and then answere .

drlaunch 4. September 2007, 18:56

It means that some server monkeys escaped from their cages and are doing mischief in the servers. Try reloading the page. I think it should go away after that.

Stomyr 4. September 2007, 19:17

Yes, that should help.

KYren 5. September 2007, 00:12

It worked,thank you.

Stomyr 5. September 2007, 07:24

bioscoopfan 7. September 2007, 07:49

I'm a beginner and don't understand the term 'sticky post' though it seems very easy. What's the difference between a sticky and a normal post?:-) Sorry, but can someone explain it to me? THANX!

drlaunch 7. September 2007, 11:22

Here's an example of a sticky post. The post with the Sticky Post label and all those icons on top is a sticky post. It's one of my first posts but it still stays on top when I make new posts. The concept of sticky posts also applies to forums but they're called sticky topics instead.

KYren 7. September 2007, 20:24

I want know how to create an animated avatar using a mobile phone? Would u plz tell me?

drlaunch 7. September 2007, 20:36

You can't make an animated avatar with Opera Mini. Sorry. You need to use a PC.

KYren 7. September 2007, 21:16

One more question, plz dont mind. Can my blog be deleted If I don't post for months? Can our blogs be hacked and closed down?I came to know blogs can get broken bcoz wrong tags?Is there any way to protect blogs from being hacked, deleted or broken?

KYren 7. September 2007, 21:22
