Server key for UT2k4

, , , , ,

Yesterday I wanted to get a “server key” from Epic, because I’ve lost the previous one long ago.
I tried it… And laughed my ass off!
It seems that Epic joined the “Anti-Microsoft” and “Anti-Yahoo” organization…
(I can’t remember if I used an msn address to get the first key)
The pictures will tell everything…
And also their script is broken… It shows a blank page when you enter a non-MS / Y address...
And it seems that they have no time / intention to fix it… sad

What ais a server key?

Stomyr Thursday, August 23, 2007 7:41:04 PM

To run a special (free) dedicated server, you have to obtain a server key – and of course it can’t be used as a single-player key.

So, in other words, you have a game and you want to run it on the server which is maintained by the company for the purpose of letting people who bought their game can play against each other?

Basically yes - but it is more complex than that. smile

I have a (non rented) server , and I need a server key in order to let players play on it. bigsmile

I have a computer which is used as a server - of course I don't use it for another purpose. bigsmile

So, you let a bunch of people into your computer so you can play? Then you have another computer so you can write blogs and stuff?

Stomyr Thursday, August 23, 2007 9:17:18 PM

Ok here how it goes.
I have a server and 2 other computers.
I made a dedicated server so I can join the match from any of my other 2 computers - since dedicated server means that you cannot play on it. smile

If I have this concept straight, then the dedicated server just transfers information between other computers; the dedicated server is where the bytes and bits meet, where the action of the game is actually going on; then that info is transmitted to the computers?

Stomyr Friday, August 24, 2007 8:11:43 PM

Nope - it is far more complex than that - Basically there are two server types - "Listen" and "Dedicated"

"Listen" servers are created by players who "own" the game - and for that reason those servers are changing from day to day - in other words listen servers are doesn’t have a long life - especially if they have Dynamic IP-s.

Dedicated servers are often rented by somebody - and they exist as long as the person, who rented it, pays the money for it. But you can start a dedicated server with your "bought" version - or there is a (now outdated) dedicated server package - which is only good for starting a server. Also because of the bigger brandwich (you cannot play on it), new services are available - such as team speak, WebAdmin, or you can develop or download tools, and with that you may synchronize a webpage with your server - like in Battle.net - ppl will see on a webpage who are online, etc - and of course you can make a forum for the server or form a clan. smile
(It is even more complex than this, but I hope you have an idea now how it works. smile )

Okay, so I play a game against others online; then I am playing on a dedicated server, but my computer is being used as a listening server?

Stomyr Saturday, August 25, 2007 6:13:16 AM

No - they are 2 different things. smile

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Saturday, August 25, 2007 8:15:49 PM

Stomyr Saturday, August 25, 2007 9:18:51 PM

Do not mix games with web-pages.
They are not the same. bigsmile

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Saturday, August 25, 2007 9:19:55 PM
