World Of Warcraft – Private server Vs Official server (Blizzard)
Wednesday, 30. January 2008, 14:33:12
What is the difference between Blizzard and Private server?
I’ll try to put into a list the pros and cons.
Prices:
First of all if you wish to play with WOW at Blizzard’s Battle.net, you have to first buy it. It costs approx. 30-50 $ (With the expansion The Burning Crusade)
Also you have to pay a monthly fee which varies from country to county – from 30 to 80$.
If you wish to play on private servers you DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. Since blizzard released a WOW-client YOU DO NOT EVEN NEED TO BUY THE GAME – YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT LEGALLY FOR FREE. (It takes an awful lot of time – so you should buy it for that price)(Also in most countries they give you 1 free month, so you’ll have time to decide if you wish to stay at Blizzard or go to private servers)
Population and lag:
The second biggest difference is that a lot of ppl experiences lag issues at Blizzard.
On a private server you probably WON’T EVER EXPERIENCE LAG ISSUES.
HOWEVER
70% of the private servers have low population (under 100ppl), so if you prefer crowded Blizzard servers (over 500 ppl) you won’t have fun on them.
Quest issues.
You won’t really experience quest issues at Blizzard – HOWEVER on PRIVATE servers there are a LOT OF QUEST BUGS. SOME CAN BE FIXED BUT THE MOST OF IT CANNOT. ESCORT QUESTS CANNOT BE FIXED – because they are “server dependant”.
FEW of them CAN be fixed, but 97% CANNOT be fixed.
Also on private servers sometimes there are missing quests and you have to report them.
Talents and abilities:
At Blizzard there are no talent / ability bugs.
BUT
At private servers there are bugged ability quests, but those can be bypassed. (You won’t receive experience / reputation for competing them though)
Also there are TALENT BUGS AND ABILITY BUGS ON PRIVATE SERVERS WHICH CANNOT BE FIXED – SO you HAVE TO WAIT till THE DEVELOPERS FIX IT.
And the developers tend to fix only “useful” abilities.
GM-s and Security:
At Blizzard normally you don’t have to fear that your account will be hacked (that doesn’t mean that it cannot be hacked)
HOWEVER
There are idiot jerks (or Blizzard employees – only God knows) who tend to hack into private servers, ruining the server, and deleting / modifying accounts.
A talented server holder can fortify defenses, And makes backups EVERY DAY so even if somebody fucks up your account the “owner” can fix it.
At Blizzard you may have ONLY ONE ACCOUNT – however ON PRIVATE SERVERS YOU MAY HAVE AS MANY AS YOU WISH. THERE ARE RULES THOUGH – SO ALWAYS READ THE RULES BEFORE YOU’LL GET YOURSELF BANNED.
At Blizzard if somebody cheats the person will get caught – sooner or later.
(In the end of 2006 an entire guild has been banned at Blizzard because they cheated)
(They cheated for moths – but they got caught)
THE FUNNY THING IS THAT IF YOU CHEAT ON A PRIVATE SERVER YOU’LL GET YOURSELF BANNED – MOST OF THE TIMES INSTANTLY – Because the developers know almost every single existing cheat even before Blizzard notices it – it depends on the owner if he/she knows enough to install / setup them
Blizzard GM-s are often rude, and not really helpful – HOWEVER At PRIVATE SERVERS the GM’s are mostly helpful – and they are mostly happy to help.
So as you see there are a pros and cons.
If you would like to play w/o bugs you have to pay for it – but if you don’t mind bugs – or you don’t want to pay, you can go to a private server.

I have a private server and just wanted to clear some things up,
1. 97% of quests CANNOT be fixed through shortfixes such as using 'Quice' and 'MDM'which just changes variables attributed to the quest. Though 100% of them CAN if you have some scripting knowledge in programming and server managing. It takes longer and requires more knowledge but it can be done.
2. Same with talents, they can all be fixed, its just super hard. And I mean HARD.
3. Like the person above me said you can have multiple accounts, if you pay for them. Hell, a few people play with more than 15 characters at one time using programs like key clone. I tried it on my private, it was too hard for me, lol.
4. Blizzard Gm's are only rude because they deal with hundreds of assholes a day, and the chances them of them punishing a player who might of done something wrong and isn't an asshole is slim. So they treat the people the punish like assholes because if you do shit, you probably are one. I know this because a friend of mine is a GM for wow, and he gets shit from cheaters and harassers alot.
Well, good article hope you can add some of those points into it, and hope it cleared some issues on what private servers can actually acomplish.

I guess I wrote the account thing in a way that it can be misunderstood.
While I played and had knowledge in Ma**s short fixes always worked - or some creativity - for example creatures dropped their selves (when you had to net them in outland for example)
(Or the Karazan questline part in Black Morass by simply talking to the mage)
The thing is nobody gives a fk if a GM has a bad day - they are there to help, and if they are not capable to do it so than they shouldn't - simple as that.
Since I'm NOT playing wow anymore, I cannot update it
Thanks for sharing your thoughts though

The first fact of this debate is that the "blizzard" as a company is owned and runned by a people that also incorporate with the U.S Goverment. That means that they can do like any rule and law anytime in wow,no matter what laws exist till now.
The second fact of this debate is that the way that game will affect on you,and how you will be affected by the game psychically, was programed by
very sofiscicated (goverment / army) computer.
The third fact of this debate is that "blizzard" by any means doesn't care about the profit they make.Money is relevant......But the thing they are really BADLY after is to have as much as possible users on this planet. They want you to play it every day for the rest of the days. And if you agree with this or not, this game is possible to keep someone playing it whole life.

For myself, I've been a paying subscriber since 02/2005, so that has been awhile.
As for Blizzard customer service being rude, I yet have to run into a rude customer service rep and I have yet to run into a rude game moderator.
I don't support private servers when games are great. It goes against the whole existence of great games being developed. Remember that gaming is a luxury. If you can't afford it, then play something that you can afford.

also think about it private severs aint that great i mean i play both becasue its my choice but still reall sever much better ps is weak for one reason the donations now if you can get that crap you could pay for reall one i mean its bs saying you cant pay for it when you pay for a fake one also when lose on a ps like mabye a duel they rub it in but when you think about it they havent earn shit on ethier sever they just went free on it i think games are judged by the time put into it and not by the money you use to have advantage i mean if he uses money i would probley resort to hacks or something *just a suggestion or example you choose*
Really they ought to do what guild wars and chapions online are doing make it free to play and i gues put donations but not to good of stuff to give a advantage make it fair
Or i alll fail SWICTH THE WHOLE PROJECT TO A SYSTEM LIKE PS3 OR XBOX I MEAN THEY MADE OBLIVION NOT MUCH DIFFERENT!!!
