DAT file

A family member asked me to make copies of her Ultrasound Sonogram that had been saved to a DVD Video. When I save it to my computer, it is a DAT file. I cannot open, watch, or copy this DAT file.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can copy this video without purchasing a program to do it?

I don't happen to have the solution to your problem, Annette. But, let me toss the problem over to the guys on the avast General Topics Forum. Someone might know how to do it and with some FREE Converter of some sort. Who knows? It might even be do-able with something already in Windows.

I'll get back to you when I get a reply. If necessary, I'll also try the Geeks to Go Forum.

Ahhh HAH! I see Jaxs beat me to it.
That 3rd link that he provided is the very same link that a guy over at the avast General Topics Forum posted.

Hopefully one of those links works, Annette. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Happy.gif -

Annette, have you tried to change the properties of the file to the extension that will enable you to open it??

I don't know what to change it to so that I can open it.

I tried that link before I posted this blog. It will not open the DAT file. It gives you links to other sites that sell programs to open it. If I knew what to change the file extension after the dot to, then I could view and copy it with the programs already on my computer.

Thank you for the links Jax. I will check the first two out. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Dance.gif -

Some more sources that are more helpful in opening a video file.

http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/open-dat-file-extension-in-windows-quickly/

http://www.vcdgear.com/download.html

http://www.ehow.com/about_5390212_dat-file.html

You have two options. One is to find a program that will allow you to create a DVD or VCD from this file. The other is to download an emulator program that will act as a virtual DVD drive. Point this program at your movie file and it will load it as if it were a disk in your DVD drive (this will work even if you don't actually have a DVD drive). Then you will be able to play it with your normal DVD playing software.

SummerAngel Wednesday, February 23, 2011 8:08:26 PM

http://files.myopera.com/SummerAngel/Smilies//thankyou.gif - Jax. I will try to download an emulator program. I do have a DVD player/recorder. Hopefully, I will have a day off soon. I want to have plenty of time to so I can read everything and do it right the first time.

Hugs to you and Kim.

Hi Annette,
Did you ever get that file opened? Just curious.bigsmile

Hope all is going okay with you! Prayers and hugs for you always!!!love angel heart

SummerAngel Saturday, March 5, 2011 6:03:30 PM

Yes, I downloaded AVS Video Converter. It would let me watch it on a very small player, but referred me to a pay site for the program to watch it full screen and copy it.

Everything is ok here...hope it is with you too. http://files.myopera.com/SummerAngel/Smilies//pray.gif - and http://files.myopera.com/SummerAngel/Smilies//ph.gif - 4 U.

Everything is okay here too. My grandson will be here shortly. Paw pa and Spirit just went to pick him up. Flow'Bear still won't ride in the truck, or any vehicle for that matter. Spirit has gotten over her trauma from the accident, but Flow'Bear is afraid of the traffic instead of the truck and riding, like Spirit was.worried I really feel for her, as she is really scared of the traffic. My hubby had her on lead yesterday and she was out front with him, when a couple of cars went by and she dragged him to get to the garage away from the cars. worried

Poor Flow'Bear. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Sad.gif - I hope she will overcome her fears of the traffic soon and enjoy her rides and walks.

You should try vlc
In Linux I'd use dd to make a .iso and then put it back on to a blank dvd,
dd if=/dev/sr0 of=sonogram.iso bs=1M

Oh Noooo! VLC! scared
VLC Media Player didn't work very well at all on my computer. Some guys at the avast Forums give VLC Media Player rave reviews and is their Fav Media Player, but for others, VLC was an uncooperative tantrum-throwing child. scared http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL.gif -

Ehhh, it's like any other App. You just have to try it on YOUR computer and see whether it works your computer, regardless of how it did on other people's computers.

Maybe it was because of your dial up or you downloaded the wrong version for your computer.

Glue seems to know quite a bit about it and hopefully will answer questions I may have.

If it does turn out to be a problem child, I can always delete it. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/BigGrin.gif -

Suntana Monday, March 7, 2011 4:50:04 AM

Nope, I didn't load the wrong version for my computer. And my Dial Up had nothing to do with VLC's ineptitude. I was just trying to play Audio Clips and VidClips that were already saved in my Hard Drive. No doubt my computer's anemic 256 Meg of RAM and the prehistoric 5.98 MHz Celeron Processor were the problem. However, there were various guys there at the avast Forums with much newer and more powerful computers than mine and VLC also failed on their systems.

Hopefully VLC is the ticket on YOUR system for what you're needing for that DAT situation and everything else. The odds are much better that it WILL work on your system vs. mine.

And Aadil aka Qlue SHOULD know every atom of VLC like the back of his hand.

The $64,000 question is:
Will it play my Mini Concerts over and over and over? http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Cool2.gif -

Your mini concerts do not play with the same program I use to watch DVD's on my computer, so they will continue to play over and over just like before. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Yes.gif -

I've never had a Windows environment so I can't say how well vlc works with Windows or which version is best for a given version of Windows. awww.
Yes Chuck! vlc plays your mini concerts just fine. p.

Well, Annette, maybe "wrong name" is too harsh. Let's just say you calling Aadil "Glue" was http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Secret.gif - correct-challenged. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/BigGrin.gif -

correct-challenged...hmmmmm
Maybe it's a TAD file instead of DAT file or is that dyslexia-challenged. lol

BTW, Jaxs, I haven't forgotten about your new Blog Design. I'll eventually get to it. I've been busy with this, that and the other. And I'm having to also concentrate on my Blog. As most of y'all had noticed, I had gone a huge chunk of period there with no new Blog Posts. I had been working on Blog Designs ... plus, being pissed off at MyOpera for the AWOL Opera Swag Soap Opera and I lost track of just how long I had gone without a new Blog Post.

But, you're definitely still on the queue, Jaxs.

I will be able to work more with her when the weather drys up. Then I can take her for little short walks to start with, and then as she becomes more accustomed to the traffic we can go a little farther. I'm pretty sure she'll be pulling me home at first but
that's alright. I have the patience to get her through this. We've been working with both girls for almost a year now. bigeyes Spirit is back to her old self enjoying the rides, and I believe we can get Flow'Bear over her trauma and back to riding too.yes

They sure are, and this little guy of ours is no exception.
His parents signed him up to start home schooling this week. yes up
He is doing 3rd grade work now. We're so proud of him. He is being home schooled because he is far ahead of his peers, and the public schools teach to the level of the slowest child in the class. down Our boy needs to keep learning at a quick pace and not slowed downed for anything. smile

Of course it is pouring as I type this. scared

I watch 19 Kids and Counting. They home school also. I think it's wonderful for a parent or parents to be in a position to choose this option.

It is the best way to educate our children if you can do it. For Sure! yes Unfortunately too many parents have to work, and are single parent households, so they couldn't home school no matter how badly they may want to. worried left

SummerAngel Sunday, April 3, 2011 7:33:13 PM

So true. I hope it goes really well for your daughter and grandson. Home schooled children have many opportunities for social interaction with other home schooled children and they aren't subjected to the many negative influences in the public schools.

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Sunday, April 3, 2011 9:58:47 PM

What if the parents are idiots? lol

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, April 3, 2011 11:07:44 PM

then they send their kids through the public school system and expect them to graduate as geniuses. p.

SummerAngel Monday, April 4, 2011 12:44:05 AM

http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL2.gif - Jax, Qlue probably said that in jest, but it's true. My sister teaches school in Florida. She said that 98% of the time problem children have problem parents.

I would say the idiot parents will not take the time, or spend the money, to home school their children.

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Monday, April 4, 2011 7:06:32 PM

Some of those idiot parents have million dollar piggy banks and live right here. Their children are the biggest snots with attitudes, however there are exceptions.

SummerAngel Tuesday, April 5, 2011 3:39:56 PM

Those parents are probably out making and spending money. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL2.gif -
They don't have time for home schooling...they put their children in private schools. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Wink.gif -

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Thursday, April 7, 2011 5:27:55 PM

The afternoon cocktails, happy hour followed by an early evening dinner. What a busy schedule for them. lol

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Monday, April 11, 2011 2:03:35 PM

Well I'd have to say those problem children learn it from somewhere, it stands to reason it would be their parents. left

My grandson is doing better with getting his work done now that he is home doing it. Of course we found out that since he is Autistic and has an IEP the school won't push him to learn anything. They have no expectations of him, to learn or not. I was absolutely infuriated when I heard that. Here we are expecting him to be taught just as the other kids and we find out he isn't expected to do the work. The kids like him are written off before they are even given a chance. My grandson is a genius level intellect, he just has difficulties with the social side of life. eek

SummerAngel Monday, April 11, 2011 3:29:41 PM

Our tax dollars support the public schools. We have every right to expect ALL of the children in public school are taught and expected to participate in class discussions and turn in assignments. If our children are falling behind in these areas, we should be contacted IMMEDIATELY and given the opportunity to help the teacher identify and correct the problem!!!

It may be your grandson got a bad teacher that just doesn't care. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Sad.gif -

How I wish it were that simple. A bad teacher we can fix, have him switched to another class, but it isn't the case. We learned this when we decided to put him in home schooling. We were asked if it was because they had no expectations for him in public school.?! We were surprised by the question so, did a bit of investigating and found out if we left him in public school whether or not he could spell his name wouldn't matter he would keep being passed to the next grade. no yikes Can you believe it? scared

SummerAngel Wednesday, April 13, 2011 3:51:41 PM

NO!!! I cannot! Is it because he is Autistic or is every child passed to the next grade whether or not they have learned anything...at least mastered the basic requirements?

Mad Scientistqlue Friday, April 22, 2011 2:58:05 AM

I've heard shocking statistics about American children graduating from high school while still being illiterate. awww.
And it seems that South Africa will soon have similar problems as we've adopted the same education philosophy. irked.

SummerAngel Friday, April 22, 2011 9:49:17 AM

Qlue, I've heard there are American children graduating who don't meet the requirements and have absolutely no possibility of a college education.

I hope the US statistics improve soon. We definitely need to get back to the basics of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Education is SO important.

Mad Scientistqlue Friday, April 22, 2011 9:17:04 PM

From what I understand they no longer hold kids back and tell them they failed. Apparently it hurts their emotional and mental aspect and can be damaging. have you ever heard such crap in all your life?!!furious We have a country of people who can't even name the three branches of government, and certainly don't know what they do. scared God help us!!!

We have people who have been graduated from high school who can't even read their own diploma. This country has certainly declined in the education arena.
But it has been done purposely. Those in power have implemented a plan called Dumbing up America. Look it up on Google. You'll be surprised at what you find! bigeyes
I'm sorry to hear your country is taking the same path on education.cry
