Road Trip to the 60s

Yay! I did it. I finally achieved what was thought to be unachievable. No, I didn't finally get to meet Kelly Monaco, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Heather Graham, Julie Bowen, Christina Aguilera or any other talented women who just happen to be easy on the eyes. Scientists and Experts of every discipline the world over thought my mission stood almost zero chance of success. No, no, I did NOT get High Speed Internet yet. doh And no, I did NOT get my newer computer running yet. The mission I am talking about is something on which I embarked almost 3 years ago. Earlier this year, I told one of my friends here on MyOpera that I had seriously made up my mind to achieve this goal once and for all before the end of this year. WHAT? What could it have been that I told my friend? What was I so determined to do before the end of this year that neither rain, sleet, snow, hail, a Stampede of Guinea Pigs or any other obstacles would dare prevent my success? No, I did NOT finally get a Cellphone.

Well, up to now, my Blog's entire Photo Albums gallery has consisted of 1 … ONE photo. o My friend brought up this glaring observation in casual chat. So, I told my friend that I was officially declaring at that instant that I was making it my goal to add a SECOND photo to my Photo Albums before 2011 was over. And as of yesterday, add a second photo to my Photo Albums I did. Actually, I got really bold & adventurous and added 5 photos to my Photo Albums. That is correct, my Blog now has 2 Photo Albums consisting of a whopping 6 photos. I am cooking now. I am on fire.

I guess I should now move on to elaborate on just what's behind this photo-fortifying of my Blog. Just what do the photos entail? Ideally, I really would have liked to have created this Post way back on July 4th or shortly thereafter. But, I didn't have the photos to go with the Post. I kept trying to get my niece to get her Dad, my older brother to send me the photos that I would need to create the Post. But, my acquisition of the photos kept falling through the cracks. So, one day I had a novel idea … idea Why don't I just E-mail my brother myself and ask him to send me the photos? I did that and Ploop! The next day I had the photos. I should have gone this route from the get go.

Nevertheless, this past 4th of July, as per my older brother's idea, he, my sister-in-law, my Mom & Dad and I went on a Road Trip. Yep, we filled up the ice chest with Sodas and water. We packed up the Fritos, Chips, Bean Dip, Cookies and what have you. We then headed on out on our Road Trip to the 60s. We set out to go visit some of the farms where we had lived wayyy back in the 60s when my siblings and I were just growing up. I am talking about places I had literally NOT seen in decades. bigeyes

We arrived at the small Texas town, which is the base for the 2 farms we were going to visit. We made a fuel and restroom pit stop. We then slowly navigated through the small town while nostalgically looking around as we then headed out to the first of two farms we were going to go visit.

We finally found it. Our first stop … Below is a photo of the house where my family lived way back in 1969.

My family lived in this house approximately 2 years before moving yet again in early 1969. The Kitchen was there in the immediate forefront. The Living Room / Parents' Bedroom was to the left. Further back were 2 more Bedrooms. The house used to be Brown back then. We used to have a pretty nice green lawn there in front. You can go visit my Road Trip to the 60s Photo Album to see the full screen version of this photo. Plus, while there, you'll also be able to see a full screen photo of me looking into the window of what used to be my bedroom.

Our next stop … Below is a photo of the Farm Shop where my Dad used to work when we lived in the Chuck's Mansion 1969.

My older brother and I helped our Dad there at the Shop at different times. That brings me to the other significance of this photo. See that silver Butane Gas Tank there on the right of the photo? Right around that location is where back in 1969, the Gasoline & Diesel Pumps and their huge Tanks chronicled in my October 2008 Gasoline Pump Remodeling infamous incident Blog Post were located. You can go visit my Road Trip to the 60s Photo Album to see the full screen version of this photo. While there, you can see a photo of the Farm Workers Housing that was next to the Farm Shop.

While on this farm, we really wanted to visit another house where we had briefly lived before the house in the 1st photo. And we had also wanted to visit the house of some friends of ours from back then. But, we had to pass on those 2 visits because we felt we were pushing our luck with possible trespassing. Plus, one of those visits would have involved going off onto some questionable dirt road with my brother's new truck.

So, we headed on back to the small town. We did some more nostalgic looking around. We passed by our old Elementary School and the Grade School. The original High School was still there, but I never attended that one.

With it being pretty much Lunchtime, we decided we should see if we could find someone to feed us. Well, it just so happened my Dad had called some old friends of ours the day before to inform them that we'd be visiting them. Okay, so it's NOT like they had promised to feed us, but we could hope, right? I literally had NOT seen these people we were about to visit, in 42 years! yikes Needless to say, the meeting was almost surreal. We all sat around outside in their porch and chatted for about half an hour. Feeling sorry for us and seeing that we wouldn't go away, they finally decided to ask us to join them for lunch. But, seriously, in anticipation of our reunion, they had prepared an awesome, delicious Mexican lunch. We then did some more chatting with obviously a lot on which to catch up after so many years. There was also plenty of photo viewing by both us and our friends. We then said our goodbyes and headed on out to our next destination.

We traveled on to another farm where we lived back in 1966.
Below is a photo of our old house on that farm.

The house is really a duplex. My family lived on the right side of that duplex house. The entry to our side of the duplex house is the door there on the right. Our Living Room was there on the front right. Going back is the Kitchen, followed by 2 Bedrooms. There used to be a nice green lawn there to the right of the house between it and the Farm Shop where my Dad worked.

We then proceeded to journey on back to our area of Texas and back to 2011.
Throughout our entire Road Trip it was interesting seeing how memories of this, that and the other fade and fog up at different levels between different people. There would be cases where some of us recalled something vividly while others recalled them either only vaguely, differently or not at all. For example … On our way to our old house in that last photo, I casually commented, "Hey, I remember when those friends we just visited used to live in a house over there somewhere." My Mom quickly jumped in, "No they didn't." I asserted, "Yes, they did." My Mom countered, "Nope! Never happened." I stood my ground, "Yes, they did. And I am NOT backing down on this one. You all refuted that certain other memory of mine a couple years ago, but I am 100% sure on this one. I am NOT giving you this one." norris After we had visited our old house and were on our way back home, I brought the issue up again as I pointed to something more concrete this time, "THERE! That house over there in the distance. I'm pretty sure that has to be where our friends lived. It seems to be in about the right location." This time my Mom went, "Hmmm??? You know … I think it's coming back to me now. Yes, I believe I do remember now that they did live there." Swooooosh! And Chuck Scores! Nothing, but Net! I KNEW I was right. I hate to brag, but albeit I of course had my micro memory voids here and there ... overall my memory was more intact than everyone else's.

Sunny, I think you are learning to use other means of communication. Congratulations. yes I use the email when I want to keep a written conversation with my family and friends who are far away, or if we do not want to leave our home. It is an alternative to phone calls. p

That's for sure, Carol.
Since that Road Trip, we've been bringing up more things, scenes, people, families and such and Yep ... the recollections vary widely.

The other day, I E-mailed my oldest sister, who is right now living in South America. I sent her the photos and asked her if she remembered this, that and the other. Out of the 2 houses that we lived on that farm in 1969, she only recalled one of them. She also didn't remotely remember us living in that Farm Worker Housing in 1962. She didn't remember an entire big family that used to live on that farm. There were various other things that she just flat out didn't remember. She went, "Man! I feel like someone with amnesia."

At one point, regarding another family, my sister went, "Whoa Whoa Whoa! You're messing with my mind. That family did NOT live in that house to the right of the Farm Worker Housing at all." My sister pointed out that that family lived on another farm way over on the outskirts of another small town 120 miles away. I pointed out to my sister that well, she was half right. That family DID eventually live where she recalled. But, before that, they used to live at the house where I said they lived. My Mom didn't recall that family living at that 1st house either at all. Luckily my Dad adamantly backed up my recollection as being spot on. Otherwise my Mom and I would have to have had another Memory Jousting match. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL.gif -

What can I say, Carol? I wasn't in charge of Photography Direction. I just randomly looked around and didn't bother to pose. I wasn't even aware my brother had taken that photo of me looking into my old bedroom.

It would be nice if each of your family members wrote down their own recollections and send them around.

Chuck, this is the most personal post I've ever read by you and I really enjoyed it. Trips down memory lane can be fun, but they can also be frustrating. While I was staying with my brother after hospital, Arlon and I had arguments all the time over memories of our childhood. Of course, he remembered things from a male point of view and an age point of view--he's six or seven years older than I. We had entirely different perspectives on some identical events. Of course, he would never ever admit he was wrong---but he was. bigsmile

L2D2 Thursday, October 13, 2011 1:20:21 AM

Now I'm going to look at the photo albums.

Wow, Semi! The Most Awaited Post of the Year?!
As Elvis would say - Thank You! Thank You Very Much! http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Adore.gif -
I'm very flattered that it kept building up your anticipation of it as thing after thing kept making me postpone its release ... and once I released it, you found it an intriguing, interesting read. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Yahoo.gif - You almost make me blush. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Cool2.gif -

Suntana Thursday, October 13, 2011 3:37:41 AM

Semi, as to me finally E-mailing my older brother and asking him for the photos? Well, the reason I hadn't done that from the get go is that I actually don't E-mail with or casually talk to either of my 2 brother on the phone. We just chat whenever we get to meet in person. Oh, we're definitely on good terms. It's just E-mailing and Phone Chatting is just NOT our thing ... between us brother anyway.

I do periodically E-mail with 2 of my nieces. That's why I went the route of E-mailing my niece and telling her to tell her Dad to E-mail me the photos. Unfortunately, in this case, that plan didn't work. I guess I'm NOT really surprised. It's that since my niece and her husband got their new house, she is freaking out and stressing out over getting it organized. So, no doubt that's why my 2 or so E-mails to her to get her Dad to send me the photos fell through the cracks.

Ohhhhh!
¿No crees? http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/BigGrin2.gif -

Awww, Angeliki ... happy I am happy to hear that you enjoyed my ... my Uhhh, shall we say my Non-Clown side? http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/BigGrin.gif - But, seriously, yeah, it WAS quite an experiment, a venturing out into the unknown for me. I mean ... a Post with THREE photos AND an accompanying Photo Album to boot?! yikes Talk about outside my comfort zone. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Scared.gif -

I'm glad you all seem to be liking my foray into this totally unexpected style of Post. It was so different that it actually took me 3 weeks since I got the photos to actually finally BAMM! Pulling the trigger and diving into officially creating the Photo Album and writing the Post. Oh sure, there were certain things, obstacles that kept popping up and making me postpone diving into the project. But, there was also some flat out procrastination because the right FEEL, the Groove wasn't quite there ... until the other day. You know ... I think creating the Photo Album was scaring the Beejeezes out of me. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL2.gif -

I was ambivalent with this project. I could envision it both ways. I could see it hitting the Bullseye because y'all didn't expect this from me, didn't see it coming. But, on the other hand, I could also see it being an, "Ehhh ... So, what else you got?" scared Good thing it turned out to be the former.

This talk about varying memories reminded me of my Mom telling me about some of the stories one of her sisters was telling her during some reminiscing session. My Mom said her sister was going on about some Pony they had and where they kept it and who took care of it and Blah Blah Blah. My Mom goes, "I don't know where she comes up with those stories. We never had any pony ever." bigeyes

I don't know whose memory was faltering in this case, but there was obviously a HUGE disparity in my Mom's and her oldest sister's memories.

Angelikiellinidata Thursday, October 13, 2011 6:48:22 AM

doh

did somebody say "pony?'

do you remember the classic Seinfeld :

Jerry attends a family anniversary dinner with Elaine as his date but he puts his foot in it when he says he can't stand people who had a pony as a kid. Well, the hostess Manya did have one growing up and leaves the table upset. Jerry feels embarrassed by it all but when he learns that Manya died in the night, he feels responsible. To make matters worse, her funeral is scheduled at the same time as his baseball team is playing its championship game.

My pleasure, Teresa. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Adore.gif - It pleases me to no end that you enjoyed my tour of the 60s. I actually started to go inside my Chuck's Mansion while I was there. I wanted to do a walk-around of all the rooms. But, it was full of Tumbleweeds in there. And then I immediately heard some rustling sound there at my feet below the Tumbleweeds. bigeyes I immediately went, "O --- Kay! That's it. I am out of here." That is because with it being a farm, we did occasionally encounter Snakes and Tarantulas back then. I wasn't taking any chances with what could be lurking below the weeds. So, I unfortunately had to nix my walk-around of my Mansion. sad

Suntana Thursday, October 13, 2011 4:10:18 PM

Don't worry about not understanding my entire Post. With it being Texas size and Texas English, I didn't expect that you'd be able to decipher it all. Thanks, Helen! Great to hear that you enjoyed my tour down Aquaman's Memory Lane. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL.gif -

Here is another entertaining bit for y'all. I've actually mentioned this before in a comment somewhere, but now y'all will be able to put an actual location to the scene of the incident.

Okay, look at the last photo in my Post, the Farm House 1966 one. See that last window way in the back of the house there on the right of the photo? I was once chasing my older brother because he had done something or other to me. I couldn't catch him and he kept laughing at me. My brother was standing in front of that window. I was probably 15 feet away. I got a rock and threw it at my brother. My aim was good. The problem was I didn't count on my brother being rude enough so as to MOVE out of the way and NOT let himself get hit. So ... CRASH! The rock went right through the window. no http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Scared.gif -

I had been carrying around this piece of board for who knows what reason. When my Dad came out to see what the heck happened, I THINK I had the audacity to try and blame my brother for moving out of the way of the rock that I threw. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL2.gif - My Dad didn't buy my reasoning. He took that piece of board I had and he paddled me with it. scared So that's the story of that window that I never forget.

Rattlesnakes come to mind as some of the types of snakes we encountered back then on the farms, Teresa.

In that Farm House 1966 in the last photo in my Post, we once had a Snake INSIDE! http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Scared.gif - One of my younger sisters at that time managed to get down from her Crib, her Camita and in her broken speech told my Mom, "Allá hay un Mimal." She was trying to say, "Allá hay un Animal ..." that there was an animal over by her bed. My Mom was wondering what the heck my sister was talking about. My Mom went and checked and there was a Snake under the baby crib! yikes scared The neighbor old man who lived in the other side of the duplex house came over and got rid of the snake.

Suntana Thursday, October 13, 2011 9:55:40 PM

Depending on the location in Texas, Teresa, there are a LOT of Rattlesnakes. There is this town in Texas ... Sweetwater, Texas where they have an Annual Rattlesnake Roundup. They go and hunt thousands of Rattlesnakes then have a big ole Rattlesnake Fry. chef I've never eaten any Rattlesnake and am NOT in any hurry to try it. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Stop.gif -

Well, Angeliki, as to how that young girl knew about Pole Dancing and Strippers? Nowadays you can see that pretty much outright even on Prime Time TV, even on the CW Network, which is supposed to be geared towards Teens and young adults, but is probably watched by a lot of Pre-Teens.

Yeah, Darko, it's strange how when one is living somewhere ... anywhere, things don't really seem to change. They of course DO change, but one is there to progress with the changes, so they don't seem drastic. But, when you then move away and don't return for many years, there is of course a HUGE change.

And if one is talking about a small town and / or farm, the changes are almost always for the worse. Things seem rundown once one returns.

Yep, Darko, 1969 ... an excellent year indeed. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/BigGrin.gif -

That photo of Chuck's Mansion circa 1969 looks like an authentic western movie set! bigeyes .

That it does, Aadil.
All it needs is John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Richard Boone tying their horses to those wooden posts and Yeeeee Haw! It'd be complete. Maybe I should have named the photo - Chuck's Cantina 1969

I guess my photos didn't do much for dispelling any possible stereotypes and notions that all of us here in Texas dress up in Western wear everyday and ride horses to everywhere. Oh, that reminds me. In just a bit, I have to clean my two 6-Shooter Pistols and replenish the bullets on my Gun Belt. I have to go to a Birthday Party this afternoon or evening and it could get rowdy. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Guns.gif -
