Suntana’s Blog Trek 1-Year Anniversary

Four score and seven years ago … plus four score and seven years, would bring us to, well … TODAY! :D Friday July 31, 2009 is a day for me to celebrate. It was 1 year ago on July 31, 2008, according to my Blog's Archive, a Thursday on which my Blog Debuted.

Y'all can click on the link below to get a glimpse at how it all started:

http://my.opera.com/Suntana/blog/this

As y'all can see by my 1st Blog Post, I didn't even have any intentions of having a Blog. It was supposed to be just a Test to find a Blog Service for my oldest niece. Upon informing her of my Opera Community fact-finding mission's results, she basically told me, "Thanks, but no thanks" as she was already set elsewhere. Why that ingrate! :irked: Kick sand in my face, will she? Just Kidding! IMO, it would sooo turn out to be her loss as I would later find out how great the Opera Community is. :headbang:

I then pondered, "What AM I gonna do with this thing now?" Could I perhaps take it over? But, what did I know about Blogging? Just a couple weeks before that, a friend had informed me that to be able to comment on her MySpace Blog, I'd have to sign up. I distinctly remember going, "WHAT? You mean like … have a Blog? Me? And what pray tell would I put on a Blog? I don't even take pictures or have a camera for that matter. Ehhh, if one day I ever suddenly think that I have something worthy of putting on a Blog on a normal basis, I'll sign up with MySpace and start me a Blog, Okay?"

So, a couple of weeks after that exchange with my friend, I found myself with a Blog on my hands. :eyes: I drifted into deep thought … for a couple of seconds :jester: and concluded that, "Well, I CAN write. And I do have some incidents, adventures and such about which I could write." I guess at that time, on some level it was just sorta gonna be a way to chronicle my hilarious adventures from my past. I figured my youngest sister and my oldest niece, yes the ingrate that didn't want the Blog … would get a kick out of my adventures. It would be just like old times, similar to when some years earlier, they enjoyed this News Letter that I'd E-mail them --- Toto & the City. Yeah, I had gotten that title as a take on Sex In the City.

After I came out of those couple of seconds of deep thought, I made the decision, "What the heck; I'll do it! Game On! It's time the Blogging World and this Opera Community meet Suntana!" :headbang: Okay, so at that point, I guess that cocky thought was secondary cuz like I said, really, my sister and niece were supposed to get a kick out of my writings. Sure, I hoped that other people would find and enjoy my Blog, but there was no guarantee that that secondary goal would be successful. I figured that if my Blog was successful outside of my sister & niece's reading, it'd be a welcome bonus.

By the way, my Blog wasn't always called - Suntana's Blog Trek. Nope, it started out as – Suntana's Musings. Here is the image of my Blog's 1st custom Header:

http://files.myopera.com/Suntana/blog/Suntana's%20Musings%20Header%20OP.png

Since that's my 1st custom Header, I'll have to point out that it's NOT like I arrived on the Opera Community knowing how to customize my Blog. Nah! I knew absolute SQUAT in that area. But, I was intrigued and fascinated by custom Blog Designs that I saw on the Opera Community. That was one of the things that helped make my decision to stick with the Blog. I envisioned myself being able to customize my Blog. I had no clue as to how I'd eventually customize my Blog, but the plan was to do so.

My Blog's very 1st Visitor was Dennis (H82typ). I'll never forget that. Thanks, Dennis! I knew I had arrived. SOMEONE knew I existed! My next 2 Visitors would be Tamil and Andrew (SouthernCross). Very quickly, Andrew agreed to help me with the CSS Code to install that Suntana's Musings Header, which I had already created, but didn't know how to install. With more CSS Code help from Andrew back then and to this day, along with CSS Code help from Mik Furie, Lorenzo Celsi and DrLaunch, I little by little learned how to customize my own Blog.

As I learned more and more, I became confident enough so as to give back to the Opera Community by helping others by customizing their Blogs … without fear that I'd destroy their Blogs. Hmmm? Funny I should mention that. Some of y'all might remember that on my very 1st foray into customizing someone else's Blog, I … I … :left: :right: I sorta did temporarily Semi-Destroy her Blog. :insane: Imagine my SHOCK when I went to check out her newly-installed Pride & Joy Blog Design, courtesy of me and instead all that was displaying was an unreadable MESS! :yikes:  Then the Comments started coming in, wondering what happened to her Blog. I had to virtually hold a Press Conference and do some damage control, divulging that it was MY doing, :o: but that it'd be fixed as soon as she got my PM. The bad thing was she had already gone to sleep, not knowing her Blog was a MESS. I was surprised that I was able to sleep, knowing that my friend's Blog was in that Semi-annihilated state. I wondered if all her friends would get together and conceivably vote me off the Opera Community a la being voted off the island on the TV Show Survivor ... for basically Tornado-afying her Blog. She did fix it the next morning once she read my PM. Whew!

At some point, several Posts into my Blog's existence, I decided that Nnnnggg, my Posts weren't really "Musings" per se. Therefore, I came to the realization that I needed to change my Blog's title. I did some brainstorming and tossed around several possibilities. After all was said and done and the dust had settled, the current Suntana's Blog Trek won out as my Blog's new title.

In the past year, I have made many great friends here on the Opera Community. Some have come and gone, but that's the nature of Online communities. Others are still around since I met them in the early days of my Blog. I have had a lot of fun during this 1st year of my Blog and there is more fun to be had.

The ultimate highlight and pinnacle achievement of my Blog in its 1st year would have to easily be when I got the News that I had been selected MOTW (Member of the Week) on June 12, 2009. It is such a surreal feeling when one considers that the honor of the selection is out of the entire 2 Million PLUS Opera Community Members from all over the world. When have I ever achieved a Global honor like that before? Never.

With this Post, it'll be 52 Posts. Woo Hoo! 52 Posts right on the money for my 1st year. From the get go, I had decided that my Blog's format was going to be to shoot for 1 SOLID Post per Week. And that's what it turned out to be despite the extremely rare missed week. And there y'all have it … a little bit of history lowdown and assorted Kibbles & Bits of things that went on with my Blog in its 1st year.

Thanks Everyone for Visiting and Supporting Suntana's Blog Trek!

And lucky we are that you decided to stay and give Opera a whirl, Pumpkin. When I was a noobie, I kept seeing this gaudy keyboard image with Suntana for a username. What? Does this guy compare himself to Santana? Then I found out his name was CARLOS Suntana. Ha! Conceited ain't he? So I had to "trek" over here and find out who this Suntana feller was. And I started reading and the rest, as they say, is history. I was hooked by your witty and innovative use of the English language.

Then I wanted a pretty blog, so I, uh, sneakily with subtlety hinted that I would love to have him design a blog for me, then I proceeded to butter him up and, sure enough, he loves butter, so he fell into my trap.

And I have grown to appreciate Chuck for his helpfulness, his humor and wit and his way with words, and to appreciate him as just a nice, nice guy who I am honored to call a friend.

Happy Anniversary on your first year here on OC. The place wouldn't be the same without you.:hat:

Hi there Sunny, and happy 1st anniversary! :hat:
It's been great getting to know you, and to be a loyal reader of your blog. Keep up the good work.

Hey Carlos! Cheers for the first year! I'm glad you decided to keep the blog too.

My first year was in April or May. It sorta came and went with no fluff. I never even thought of doing a post on it. I probably should have.

You're right that being MOTW is surreal. I get no attention whatsoever in real life unless I have an art showing or it's my birthday.

intothedeep 1. August 2009, 13:23

Congratulations on your 1st Anniversary, Carlos! And another great post!

I was invited to Opera to check out a friend's blog, but as an anonymous visitor, I didn't have access to leave a comment so here I am today...two and a half years later and the rest is history! It's been a lot of fun!

I remember we first met a Javaen's place. You, Jen, Marike, Dennis, and I all hit it off from the start and became regulars and good friends :D I remember that little blooper so well too  and how anxious you were about it, felt so bad for ya then, but knew everything would work out okay!

Well keep blogging, Carlos, and bringing a smile to our face! :hat:

Suntana 1. August 2009, 15:49

Gaudy Keyboard image with Suntana on it? :yikes: Don't worry. I'll help you out. The word for which you were looking is, "ingenious." p: You proved the success of my goal in creating that Logo. The goal was for it to catch people's eye and be In Yer Face. Even if you closed your eyes, it'd still be ingrained in your mind and you'd still see it. I guess to a certain extent it was a case of any press is good press. If it got you to check out my Blog, well then - Cha-Ching! :headbang: I'm happy that my Logo's gaudiness hooked you as a solid, regular Visitor, Reader and entertaining Commenter / Commentator ... Ummm, Comment Box Stuffer?

The TV Commercial might have been, "Everything's better, with Bluebonnet on it," but Nay! You left nothing to chance. You used genuine BUTTER when you subliminally hinted you wanted a custom Blog Theme, without actually outright saying it. You then played it Cool with the aloofness of a cat with the attitude of, "I'll let you know. :eyes: I'm in no rush." And then it was the Clash of the Texans in coming up with your Blog's final LOOK. I wouldn't find out until later when I got my replacement Monitor, that you were right about the Parchment. :o: Even then, I wasn't about to immediately admit it until sometime later.

Peppermint, thanks for your contribution to my Blog ... the terminology there on my Menu's Profile Button. :jester:

Suntana 1. August 2009, 15:57

Thanks, Carol! Is that Non-alcoholic Beer you got there? I wonder how that would taste. Have you ever tried it? Or is it Vodka with Lemon Kool-Aid?

Suntana 1. August 2009, 16:04

Thanks a Buncherooni, Zaph! I am glad to have you roaming the halls and corridors of my Suntana's Blog Trek Enterprise StarShip. The distinct sound of those famous Red or Purple Pumps as they Clickity Clack on the floor, is music to my ears! It was a pleasure entertaining you this past year.

Suntana 1. August 2009, 16:10

Heyyyyy, Tamil! Thanks a lot for helping tune up the engines on my StarShip early on and getting it to run smoothly. I appreciate the Opera Technical Stuff help you provided in the past year.  Now my StarShip's engines purr like a cat. Hmmm? Or now I wonder ... has that purring been Zaph all this time? :jester:

Suntana 1. August 2009, 16:38

Pam!!! Isn't that just a Super Cool serendipity to have had your MOTW selection and my Blog's 1st Anniversary fall on the same day? It's a bummer that you forgot to Blog about your Blog's 1st Anniversary. I guess it's NOT too late. Well-thought out and well-written, it can still be pulled off. Hey! These are our Blogs. We can do whatever we want to in them. If you want to do a slightly-delayed 1st Anniversary Post, it's your prerogative. Now that your Blog got you selected MOTW, it would be even more of a reason to give your Readers a little history and trip down memory lane.

In trying to remember how you and I met, right or wrong, what comes to mind is you talking about how you almost made a Police Officer virtually retire when you made him shake in his boots when he thought you were a Hell's Angel when you were in your Halloween costume.

LanaBanana 1. August 2009, 18:14

Congrats again, Carlos, and thank you for inviting me to read. I always look forward to your musings or trek. You are a :star:

L2D2 1. August 2009, 19:40

Chuck, hate to draw your attention to this fact, but today IS the first day you have admitted I was right about the parchment. You may have hinted but you haven't outright confessed it, that I was right. Until today. At last!

Carlos, I don't remember when we first met. It might have been you commenting on the Halloween picture. Not sure though.

Suntana 2. August 2009, 03:39

Lana, it's great to hear that you look forward to reading about my adventures, musings and Home Improvement Gone Wrong episodes, Etc.

L2D2 2. August 2009, 04:45

I can't remember, but I met Chuck on Carol's, Pam's or Jen's blog. Probably Pam. Too lazy to go look.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 00:09

Thanks, Mags! I already knew Dennis as he was my Blog's 1st Visitor. But, it wasn't until I met up with you, Jen and Marike that one week that we all clicked like a Mouse Button. :yikes: Uhhh, well, you know what I mean. If I recall correctly, it was the weekend of that very week or the next, which thanks to y'all World Class Chatters, one of my Blog Posts broke my Blog's up to then High Mark for Comments.

I sure will do my best to keep bringing smiles to y'all's faces, Mags!

Suntana 4. August 2009, 00:17

You are welcome, Sandra ... Errr, I mean, Annette.
Remember I said way back when I first met you that you looked like Sandra Bullock? :D It was my pleasure helping you. I was surprised at how seriously you got into wanting to learn how to customize your own Blog and refused to let your eyes get glazed over.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 00:24

Thanks, Darko! :headbang:
Yep, I'll bring the Tacos, Burritos and Nachos.
But, I'll have to pass on the beer. I don't drink anymore. But, the rest of y'all are welcome to drink. I'd have to get in a DeLorean and go back in time to Pre-1984 to quaff a couple of Cold Ones. I THINK as I recall, Doritos used to be a good Beer Snack.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 00:49

Glad you enjoyed what you read in my Blog so far, Khobesh! I went over and commented on your Post.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 00:57

Chips ... Lucy, I guess I really hadn't seriously thought of what WOULD have happened if my niece HAD accepted the Blog. Would I have gotten curious and want to give the OC a shot myself? Or would I have just gone, "Oh well, my work here is done. Back to ... Back to ..." Hmmm? Just exactly what WAS it that I used to do before I discovered the OC? Oh yeah! I remember now. Well, I did used to hang out more on the AOL Message Boards. The thing is that they changed the format of the Boards. Now with the format that those Boards use, it is VERY slow and problematic trying to Post with my Dial Up.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 01:04

Heyyy, Chaos Head! Oops! Excuse Me! That was the Kool-Aid talking. :o: I meant, Heyyy, Mette! I am running seriously low on Butter! You sure know the secret places from where to acquire the BEST Butter. Thanks for the congratulations! And thanks for the out of the blue quirky funny surprises.

L2D2 4. August 2009, 06:04

What do you mean, when friends are still friends, Mette?

Pusilille 4. August 2009, 06:08

Nothing more nothing less than what it says Linda
Friends comes and friends goes....
Way of life and how it is.
I feel abit sad when giving comments and get kind of ignored and no responce back.
But....Linda, I do not ponder abt it

That's a Beach Boys song, right, Peppermint?

Good Morning, Mette! You're absolutely right, Mette. I wrote the same thing in one of my Posts or Comments recently. It is just the nature of Online Communities, be them Blogs or Message Boards. Friends / People will come and go. Things change.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 15:35

Hey, Peppermint, are you still looking exclusively for a RED flower or would maybe those Pink flowers in Mette's Good Morning image interest you for your Header? I'm NOT 100% sure how the Light Pink would work with your Header's Parchment. We'd just have to try it IF you're interested.

Suntana 4. August 2009, 15:43

Thanks, Kim! Any Florida Orange Juice for us all?

L2D2 4. August 2009, 20:01

Did you get the links for those images I sent couple days ago, Chuck? There was a pretty red rose there with butterfly.

L2D2 4. August 2009, 20:02

The pink is pretty too.

Khopesh 4. August 2009, 20:07

Adding a few more pretty roses L2D2 ?

L2D2 4. August 2009, 20:30

Maybe replacing the purple ones, Khopesh. I think red will look best if I can find one Chuck likes. haha
