JReplaceThem: Multiple find and replace made easy and fast!

There is a famous saying “Necessity is the Mother of all Inventions” but for me necessity gives me chance to test new software! And I just had another opportunity to test out a freeware utility!

Ever had a situation when you needed to find and replace same content in a large number of files? Well, I had one situation recently and the number of files was a staggering 0.2 million! Manual find and replace was out of the equation. Since, they were HTML files, I thought of using the Macromedia Dreamweaver which has got an excellent find and replace dialogue box. But apparently, I was expecting too much from the software which is essentially an excellent HTML editor! It worked well, but the large number of files made sure that either it crashed while making the edits or took awfully long to do the changes. 2 different changes in 0.2 million files means an incredible 0.4 millions find and replace. It needed a specialist application and I found out JReplaceThem through a Google search. It is a Java based application which needs Java Runtime Installed. The install sizes without the JRE installer is 1.1 Megs which is a tag heavy for such a utility but I have found that Java based applications are generally on the heavier side.

What’s next for Google! 5 things that comes to my mind…

Google has had a meteoric rise to stardom. I remember an article I saw in PC World Indian Edition in the year 1999 which mentioned this small startup with a funny name. I passed it on like yet another search engine which were booming in those days. Who could have thought that day that in the coming years it will reach such massive heights that companies like Microsoft and Yahoo! would find it tough competing.

They have come a long way since then. Now they have an arsenal full of utilities for the common netizen. They have added loads of additional services to their search engine, they have introduced web search tools like the Google Toolbar and Google Deskbar, and they have launched non search related services like Orkut and GMail! So, what’s next for Google? What is there to conquer now? What fields can Google set its eyes on? I am in no position to guess what Google has on its mind but I have given some thoughts on what I would like to see Google get into!

Obviously, the list is not a mind boggling one. It contains most of the existing competition’s services, nothing revolutionary. But Google would do well if it starts competing with competition where it hurt them most and they have started doing that with GMail!

So here are my 5 ideas that are not necessary innovative but might make it big, if implemented the Google way!

Desktop GMail
Google Messenger
Google Browser

Search for the ultimate download manager

Unfortunately, it is still on. I have been online since 1998 or 1999. Yeah, I know that I was a late starter. But considering I hail from India and even after 6 years, the connection I am on is as good as just a dial-up, its pretty good. And the fact is that anyone who has been on dial-up or a connection which is as reliable as mine (it’s a pun ok?) has looked for download managers…

So did I! And the first one that I used was the good old Getright. It was almost magical in those days of dialups with so frequent disconnections that Getright was used on almost all downloads no matter what the file size was. And it saved me quiet something on telephone bills in the long run. It did what I needed then, resume downloads. Most of the other features I only came to use later. Today it’s one of the most feature rich software out there.

Opera Browser 7.50: Redefining internet browsing, for good

Calling Opera a browser would be insulting the smart people working in the small company located in Norway. They started in mid 90s and have come a long way. They have seen the domination of Netscape disappear into oblivion, and they have seen the monster Internet Explorer take over the internet. But they have survived all the up and downs. And they still are doing pretty good.

They are now in version 7.50 which was just launched few days back. And they have turned a browser into a complete web suite. They are not wrong when they call Opera the best internet experience. Opera now packs so much in the measly 3.5 megabyte of download size, that you feel that they are defying the laws of physics or something! Microsoft would be ashamed to see what the developers in Opera Software firm have managed to put in its installer. It now includes a mighty fast browser along with a revolutionary e-mail client (Google’s GMail apparently took most of its features from here!) with the usual newsreader and now a pretty decent IRC client and a functional RSS aggregator. So, Opera now let you do more than just browse the net in its full glory…

Blogger Reloaded: The way it should have been in the first place

I started blogging around a year back. And Blogger as expected was the first service I used. It was weird and it was simple. Never before was web publishing so much fun. Blogger.com made blogging as easy as web mail. You sign for the service, chose a name and simply start blogging! It was really as easy as type and click. Then in later days, I got myself some web space and started publishing to my domain. Blogger was still fun. It stored my FTP details and did all the dirty job of rebuilding and uploading the latest files.

Then Google bought Blogger and revamped the service. It made the service better as a big brand got associated with it. But unfortunately for me, one fine day the FTP service simply died on me. It started giving errors to my working FTP settings. I tried everything but could not get it to work. That day, I switched to B2 (later to WordPress) and never looked back…
