commitment and imagination

To what extent are we affected and influenced by external conditions? Is it really true that if we create brutal conditions to live and work in that we too will become brutal? How much do we become what we see and hear and read? To build a pure land, do we really need commitment and imagination? And would the external conditions lead to this or do they come from a heartfelt aspiration?
