Recently realized: Sales spawn and kill sequels

The foremost, the best, and the only reason for the expansion and as well as the refusal of sequels and spin offs of all franchises: sale, and nothing more.

Because of sales, Junko Kawano could not complete her compelling but unfinished series of Shadow of Destiny; Lucas Arts refused to resolve the cliffhanger ending of Star Wars Republic Commando; Shiny chose not to further expand the critically acclaimed Sacrifice and EA permanently forgot about the-legend-no-one-knows Clive Barker's Undying.

That's why Nintendo does not create any new franchises but releases a bunch of new titles every year, because they're all from Zelda/Mario/Metroid. That's why the crappy series of Dynasty Warrior have 7 (or whatever it is) installments. That's why Resident Evil 4 and 5, which should have been a separated franchise, were named 'Resident Evil'.

What else could be worse and more insulting toward fans that the sequel of their favourite franchise is canceled simply because of number of copies it sold?

This applies for movie also. That's why we see Spiderman 4 or Saw 7. That's why trilogies, unless previously well-written and carefully-planned before the actual production, virtually does not exist.

That sucks. And irritable. And outrageous.

Recently realized: African metal musicians

It took for seven seconds and several tries to figure out how to type the word "realize". *Metal* in the post title refers to music, not any substance nor something related to chemistry.

Europe is generally known as the root as well as the kingdom of metal. We've got Germany for thrash metal; Norway for black; Sweden, particularly Gothenburg, for melodic death, and probably a few more that I don't remember. The continent far to the west discovered five hundred years ago by Colombus also contributed a handful number of notable names and genres, though quite commercial, like hardcore punk, brutal and metalcore themselves. Even Asian lands like Japan is considered a major scene of metal music.

If you are reading this line and have read the above paragraph, I suppose you get what I've been trying to say. Yes, WTF is wrong with Africa? Why haven't I heard of anything from this continent?

This morning I tried to surf my memory archive for a African heavy metal musician, but the closest thing I can think of is probably Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage, mostly because of his hairless head, but of course, that does not make him an African. Does Africa actually not contribute anything?

All these dark-skinned people are known for is probably jumping and rolling around on the stage, the "reading" music which is now popularly mainstream, the wacky drawings on the streets and faking musical instrument sound using human voice. And pointing fingers like a freak while saying "Whatzup, man", also. Well, I know what you are thinking, but I'm not an idiot. If you want to get it straight, then here you go, I hate it all: break dancing, rapping, graffiti and beatboxing, mostly everything that comes from what you call Hip Hop culture.

I don't mean to be a racist. I don't want to be racist. And I've never thought that I would have anything to do with racism. But what Africans have created for human is a serious thorn in my eyes. I don't think I can like people who make things I hate and don't contribute anything to what I really love.

Just don't get me wrong. I'm willing to befriend and hang out with an African guy or gal. I will marry a dark-skinned lady if she's nice enough, regardless of her nationality and ancestry. You should also know that I really like Sheva Alomar. And it would be great to hear from an African metalhead which is yet to happen.

Sorry, but I was thinking about Resident Evil 5 again while writing this. And sorry again, if I make any offense.

(500) Days of Summer // Recently realized: romance incapability

, ,

The story of 'boy meets girl', but 'not a love story'. Tom Hansen, a greeting card writer, met Summer Finn, his boss' assistant on her first day at work. They developed a relationship that lasted exactly 500 days, which was told in a non-linear narrative.

I find myself unable to rate this film. At least I don't want to. Read more for explanation

Yêu [Thơ Xuân Diệu]

, , ,

Những người ai theo dõi dấu chân yêu;
Và cảnh đời là sa mạc cô liêu.
Và tình ái là sợi dây vấn vít.
Yêu, là chết ở trong lòng một ít.

Neige/Snow/Tuyết - Maxence Fermine

,

A short novel by Maxence Fermine. I don't read books often. I'm not keen on literature. I don't know how to review a book. I don't know what a good book is like. But forget about it. I want to write something.

Like Marc Levy, Maxence Fermine was an architect prior to literary career. Neige was his first work.

Neige (French) / Snow (English) is a romantic novel set in the nineteenth century of Japan. Yuko, against his father's wish to become either a monk or a samurai, choose to pursue a poetry career. He blended two of his obsessions, snow and haikus, in one. Favoured by the Poet of the Imperial Court, Yuko was advised to seek out Soseki, a retired blind poet, to learn how to color his poem verses. There he found a story of love.

Neige, is a short novel, inspired by and like a haiku, to say at first. It can be finished in two hours at most. And a few minutes more to ponder, if you wish. I like haikus, and this was also one of the reasons why I bought it. The language is simple and comprehensible for any reader, with haikus inserted between chapters and paragraphs. Some chapters are very short, just a few lines before continuing with another.

I don't know if all the critical praises on the back of its cover were true, they were not the case for me. The novel is slow and predictable, offering nothing so special. The in-between haikus did not suceeding in neither elevating the story nor enhancing the experience. Supporting characters' appearances are unimpressive, with some of them were either too faint and insignificant. The ending did not resolve the tale so well and more like a solace rather than a happy ending.

Neige is like a broken love story, with unimpressive characters and an unwell-resolved tale. And despite the fact that it was short and not time-consuming, I find it a little hard to recommend. Still give it try if you feel interested. That's how art works.

To celebrate the moment that I finished this so-serious exam.
