Random Ramblings

A spider for Roy

,

I see these spiders all the time, especially in my raspberry bushes.
They are huge, around an inch and a half I guess. I think it's their size that gives me the creeps, because as far as spiders go this species is actually very attractive, and apparantly harmless. That didn't stop me from using lots and lots of tissue to release her back outside!

Silly thoughts from my childhood. For you Karen!

Well, looking closely to that nice spider, I agreed with myself that it is a Argiope aurantia, commonly known as the Black and Yellow Garden Spider, Writing Spider, Banana Spider or Corn Spider. A truly wonderful spider  Thank you for posting it! Gotta celebrate this with some cold water
They can get a bit different in colouration, so that's probably why I was fooled in the beginning. If you wanna read more about the girl on your photo, feel free to read here:

Thanks for the linkage!

You're welcome, but you should also thank the bug for showing up, and yourself for taking the photo and keeping this as a good memory about your surrounding nature
Don't hesitate to add more photos later on. Especially when you hopefully get a better computer in the end

I have probably seen males but if they are smaller I peobably didn't notice them.

Are the males just as colorfull?

I have a perfectly fine computer. I simply refuse to have the internet on it. The kids spend way too much time online, it was too costly, and I can live without the connectivity issues.

Roy 27. September 2009, 22:55

Nope, the males are not that colourful ;-) Here's a photo of a female on the left, and a male to the right, for comparison:

Ah, I see, now I remember! Yeah, it costs to be online, and it's not too good for the kids to be online for a long time either. So, I agree with you. But posting by mms at the moment seems pretty good

It gets costly. I use Opera mini unless I have a photo to upload.

I can't see the pics :frown: Forbidden error.

What a bummer really :-( Well, turning off and on the phone might help. Other than that, well there might be bugs in Oprea too... For me it goes INCREDIBLE slowly today... :frown:

The server the pics are on seems to be blocking me. No worries I'll do an image search!

Thanks anyway though!

I did a little research- apparently these spiders are capable of delivering a very very nasty bite. They are venomous but not dangerous. From what I've read the bite feels much like a wasp sting and results in
a welt.

So glad I used the tissue!

Karen 28. September 2009, 03:32

I have the weebie jeebies just from seeing the picture.

Luckily, the weebie jeebies never stop me from catching & releasing them. I'm too much of a softy to squish 'em. :o:

Ana 28. September 2009, 07:00

 picture of a bug

Olga 28. September 2009, 10:12

This is pretty spider!

But I would never touch it!!!!! P:

Tab 28. September 2009, 10:33

I can't kill spiders either, they are too flippin' usefull.

Olga 28. September 2009, 10:36

NO way... After I had met Roy i didn't kill any spiders!

Tab 28. September 2009, 10:53

LOL I'm sure he appreciates that Olga!

I only kill mosquitos, wasps and flies.
I have fun threatening them first.

In my best Italian accent:
I'ma gonna kill your mother, and your sister, and your favorite Aunt Bea!

Yep, I'm twisted lol.

Karen 28. September 2009, 22:35

 Nah...you're fun! :headbang:

Sarah 29. September 2009, 11:06

I just hate to see the guts when they are squished! That's just wrong. I am sure no one would want their own guts squished out. :frown: Thank God we are not spiders.

Sarah 29. September 2009, 11:07

:sst: BUT if I were one, I would want to be a black widow.

Tab 29. September 2009, 17:34

I don't squish em..I electrocute them, with a battery powered tennis racket type thingy.

Karen 29. September 2009, 18:49

A light saber?! :yikes:

Roy 29. September 2009, 21:33

YEAH! Like Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Do you feel the force Tab?   bug

Karen 29. September 2009, 21:47

The Force is strong in her.

Roy 29. September 2009, 21:56

    Nerak

Karen 29. September 2009, 21:58

Tab 30. September 2009, 03:20

Lots and lots of force lol.

Lovinmalamutes 30. September 2009, 11:11

I like spiders so long as they stay outdoors. The minute they come in, well it is history for them. I send my love to take care of them.:D
