...to "convert" to Linux was not as difficult as I at the beginning thought... The most difficult was to find out which distro (distribution) should I choose...LOL
So, back to the beginnings of my Linux adventure! You should know a bit of my background - so - I am ordinary, "grey" (also in non-metaphorical meaning of the word
) human being without any technical education... I started to USE computers a bit before The Age of Window$ during my psychology studies...long time ago... I bought my first PC in 1995...with Window$, of course...what a pity...LOL...so many lost years
- but - not exactly!
Thanx to the PC's of the world I am able to communicate with my far away friends and family, I am able to write (nearly!) without errors ( I'm dyslexic using 4 languages, of which only one is my native... in my everyday life)...I am able to "play" with graphics and photography and so on - all of which would not be possible without computers and - what keeps me still alive...
For not so long time ago - "my friend - Window$PC" has began to behave a bit strange - not only it wouldn't like to change its look without "reinforcement" that means - new, expensive programs, but also - it started to slow down... Yeps, I thought, it's the time to change my "old" (3 years old!) machine... ...and then - there came more and more informations - rather scary ones! - about new Window$ Vista...I am sorry to say that but - such people as me - ordinary, "grey"... - could have problems to afford new "gadget" with Vista on...
Anyway - there is no problem without a solution! After short research on the Internet and few "smalltalks" with my computer lierate, adult son - I decided to "jump" into a Linux world... My son gave me a tip to try out LiveCD.
His choice for not-so-computer-bright mother was Ubuntu....I would say like this - I liked it a lot...it was not so easy to "burn" CD with it as it should be made in so called DAO (Disc-At-Once) mode as ISO Image...and to this you should have the right software...Luckily, my friend has Nero - so we managed to this! And all, you Geeks of the World, are laughing at old, granny Tami that she did not know it...Hmmm, OK, I agree - maybe it's stupid, but I really did not know it. On the other hand - do you know what DSM means in my language...?...or what does it mean - 'MBTI'...?
...or - 'Service First'...? LOL...a pity...one day maybe you would need the knowledge...
OK - "back to our rams"...So, we - me and my dear friend, lovely human being - poet and photographer but - nearly as big computer nob as me - we gave Ubuntu a try...And I would say like this - I like the philosophy behind it a lot, what's more - the people on Ubuntu forum are simply lovely...but - the Ubuntu/ Linux Operating System did not like to "cooperate" with my wireless card...
...another search on the Net - gave me the tip - PCLinuxOS...hmmm...Lovely! Wonderful desktop! And what a fantastic people behind it! Their Wiki is easy to read for "normal", ordinary, "grey" and so on - I am extremely grateful! I've learned a lot - and - my friend has PCLinuxOS on his desktop now...but - my laptop was too stubborn again...or - my knowledge was not enough to make wireless connection live again...I am sorry...
However - this gave me a chance to try out another distribution - Kanotix
I have no words to describe how much I appreciate the work of Kano and the team behind Kanotix - the LiveCD worked out of the box! Everything - no problems with external harddrive, cameras, PCMCIA, soundcard, videocard...And what a choice of software shipped together with it on just one CD! Amazing...So - this is main OS on my laptop since 26th of March, 2006.
It doesn't mean the end of Tami's adventures in Geek's ( read: Linux
) land... Rather - beginning... I have to learn a lot, of course...The line command (not especially needed in everyday use of modern distro's!) is still a big challenge for me (remember - dyslexic!) - but I found some useful manuals on the Net...and - if I cannot figure out at all what I should do - there are always some friendly souls around on Linux Forums...but - this is a subject for another post...
The conclusion is: If you want to renew your computer without financial overinvestments, if you would rather spend your time on learning something new than on "tweaking" and protecting against "worms" your Window$PC,...or perhaps - if you are just tired of "impossible"...try free-distributed Linux like - Kanotix, PCLinuxOS or Ubuntu!
It's definitely worth it!
Webpages which helped me (and still help!):
Kanotix
PCLinuxOS
and its (PCLinuxOS) excellent

...if you do not like those above try to choose from thousends of others on:
DistroWatch
...the rest depends ONLY on YOU!...and perhaps...Google...

Happy Linuxing!

...so - it was a very exciting day for me yesterday...
For everybody not knowing anything about Webshots - you see - this is such a kind of place you can either store your pictures on-line or display them for a public...or - BOTH!
I started to show my pictures there in late November, 2004. Not so long time ago...At the beginning I shared the pictures I took only with my friends and family...I live far away from my place of origin - so Webshots was an 'excellent' choice for the beginning 'digital photographer'...lol...Yes, yes - I started to play with digital pictures for only one year and few months ago.
...and then - together with receiving positive feedback - this kind of photography turned to be my passion...
That's why 'the featuring' on Webshots means something to me. Thanks to so many received positive messages I feel a bit recognized...lol...Sad but true...What's more - I feel I give something to the other people - let it be just few minutes of smile...IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH IT!
...and 'now to something completely different' (I hope that Monty Python group will not sue me for stealing their intellectual property...lol see here or here (for the younger generation ;o). I've read today that blog and blogging is dead because of 'unprofitability'...(original discussion is here)...
Hmm there were luckily some more merciful and 'down to Earth' voices there on Slashdot - like fx. that perhaps not everybody needs to earn money, perhaps some people simply would like to share with others...You see - I do not know how many people would ever make effort to read what's important for me. I write just simply for myself - TO MAKE MYSELF REMEMBER GOOD THINGS WHICH HAPPENED IN MY LIFE...such kinda
'self-therapy'...I also write here to let share a bit of Joy with my far away friends - some of them I will probably never meet in real...If you 'by mistake', my unknown reader would also read the things I have to share - the better for us both...This is a part of my 'philosophy' no matter what I'm doing - a bit of 'graphic', some funny pictures, a bit of writing - a little effort to make my day brighter...and , of course yours if you wish
...
from Tami with Friendship:up: ...and Love:love: ...
PS. ...and 'keep up the good work' all you Idealistic Bloggers...
...even if just one person would smile reading your things - isn't it what's all about?
