Auto-hide toolbars in Opera

, , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

You can auto-hide any toolbar in Opera after enabling it via keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture or button.

Buttons

You can add buttons to any toolbar (main bar, tab bar, address bar, navigation bar, view bar, status bar, start bar or panels) except menu bar & personal bar simply by dragging button links to required place. Clicking on the button links without dragging will add the buttons to Tools → Appearance → Buttons → My Buttons for later use.

When you try to add a button, a dialog box with following message will popup. Press OK to add button.

Adding new button with action

[Action]

Do you want to proceed?
To remove a button, right-click on it and select Remove From Toolbar.

You can find several custom buttons in Opera Wiki and TTT-Buttons.

Keyboard shortcuts / Mouse gestures

Create new keyboard shortcuts or mouse gestures in Application section with following action codes.

Toolbar Action code for keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture Button
Short Long name
Menu bar Enable menu bar & Delay, 12000 & Disable menu bar MB Menu Bar
Main bar View main bar, 6 & Delay, 10000 & View main bar, 0 Ma Main Bar
Personal bar View personal bar, 6 & Delay, 12000 & View personal bar, 0 PB Personal Bar
Tab bar View page bar, 6 & Delay, 10000 & View page bar, 0 TB Tab Bar
Address bar View address bar, 6 & Delay, 10000 & View address bar, 0 AB Address Bar
Navigation bar View navigation bar, 6 & Delay, 10000 & View navigation bar, 0 NB Navigation Bar
View bar Set alignment, "Document view toolbar", 6 & Delay, 8000 & Set alignment, "Document view toolbar", 0 VB View Bar
Status bar View status bar, 6 & Delay, 12000 & View status bar, 0 SB Status Bar

To modify auto-hide time, change Delay, X value (time in milliseconds) in above code. You have to edit Toolbar Configuration file to modify button name or delay value.

To hide/show a toolbar without auto-hide use the following.

Toolbar Action code for keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture Button
Short Long name
Menu bar Enable menu bar | Disable menu bar MB Menu Bar
Main bar View main bar, 6 | View main bar, 0 Ma Main Bar
Personal bar View personal bar, 6 | View personal bar, 0 PB Personal Bar
Tab bar View page bar, 6 | View page bar, 0 TB Tab Bar
Address bar View address bar, 6 | View address bar, 0 AB Address Bar
Navigation bar View navigation bar, 6 | View navigation bar, 0 NB Navigation Bar
View bar Set alignment, "Document view toolbar", 6 | Set alignment, "Document view toolbar", 0 VB View Bar
Status bar View status bar, 6 | View status bar, 0 SB Status Bar

If you drag & drop buttons with short name to a toolbar from Tools → Appearance → Buttons → My Buttons, space will be added to button name.

When I do the first one, and click clear, it changes color but never goes back.
How can I get my address to get off of the address bar, I type a w and a long list comes up. UGH!!!! Help. :D Thank you.

Tamil 30. June 2008, 14:38

Action code for keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture:
Delay, 360000 & Set alignment, "hotlist", 6

Button: Panels

Thanks Tamil.

I added a button to "autohide' the Address Bar. I click the button and the Address Bar disappears. What is the "autohide" feature? I thought that "autohide" meant that when I put the cursor at the top of the screen the bar would appear and than disappear if I moved the cursor away. That's what "autohide" means on other browsers.

Tamil 30. June 2008, 17:22

Toolbar will hide after certain period.

tinhoy 30. June 2008, 18:37

Thanks for buttons and showing the Delay, X action. I'm probably not using Opera the same way as you do, so I don't see the benefit of having a delay in the buttons. Can you provide some sample situations in which using the delayed button/shortcut would be preferable to an instant toggle?

edit:
Nevermind. I'm kind of slow today and finally get the point of these buttons. I only use two toolbars (tab & overloaded status) and have them up at all times, so will not be of much use to me :frown:

tinhoy 30. June 2008, 21:57

Tamil,

For your Address Bar Autohide button, is it possible to get focus on the address field automatically?

edit:

Figured it out after much trial and error:

Set alignment, "Document toolbar", 6 & Show Opera & Delay, 10 & Focus Address Field & Delay, 12000 & Set alignment, "Document toolbar", 0

For some reason Focus Address Field doesn't work by itself. Needed some kind of redrawing command plus a delay before focusing.

Even the Start bar? Are you sure?

You are also missing the instructions for the View and Navigation bars. Can you autohide them?

For example, How do I turn the "eyeglass" button on the Address bar show an autohiding View bar? I really want to know because I always want it disappearing when I'm done picking one of the view options.

Tamil 1. July 2008, 08:17

Even the Start bar? Are you sure?

Why do you want auto-hide for start bar?

You are also missing the instructions for the View and Navigation bars. Can you autohide them?

 & added.

How do I turn the "eyeglass" button on the Address bar show an autohiding View bar?

Remove your button & use View Bar button.

Tamil,

why are there those differences? Is it a bug in 9.51 10081?

Differences

Thank you.

Tamil 1. July 2008, 17:37

Did you add the highlighted set of buttons from first set of buttons and the rest from second set?

zoquete 1. July 2008, 18:13

Tamil, no I have deleted all previous versions of your buttons and added them today 17:15 again.

Tamil 1. July 2008, 18:18

Did you add all buttons with auto-hide option?

zoquete 1. July 2008, 19:03

yes, all you see in the my-buttons-list, but I added them only in this list, not to any toolbar yet. I have only MB and PB with changed behavior. Pushed = highlighted, which seems pore logical for me.

zoquete 1. July 2008, 19:07

I see the problem now: there is %200 in the code instead of %20!!!

Tamil 2. July 2008, 02:13

I cannot find %200 in the code.

zoquete 2. July 2008, 09:44

%200

This is screenshot from my statusbar hovering some of the buttons.

Tamil 2. July 2008, 10:06

That is for 0 in the code.

View main bar, 6 | View main bar, 0

nizamx 4. July 2008, 12:42

Even short named buttons are as wide as long named buttons, please check them, thanks by the way very very useful buttons.

Tamil 4. July 2008, 14:11

Are you sure?

nizamx 4. July 2008, 14:45

Just checked and yes. I recreated it with button maker and it's now narrow.

Tamil 4. July 2008, 14:49

For me it works as shown in screenshot.

nizamx 4. July 2008, 16:02

My screenshot bottom bar left side of home yours and on the right mine (regenerated with button maker). Have you tested it with 9.51?

anyway to just get the typed in adressers to show in the adress filed ?
like IE does and firefox 2.X does ( Firefox 3.0 has the same shitty adress filed that shows bookmarks and searches and history ,but in FF it was easy to find on google how to disable it so the 3.x adress filed works like in FF2.X)

i don't want to turn off the Auto Dropdown completly, only stop bookmarks(favorites)and serches to show up
only want "tih"(typed in histroy) to show like old operas did a way back (havent tested opera sens version 5 or 6)

How to combine show/hide and auto hide togther, i.e., if a bar is on, it would hide the bar; otherwise, it shows the bar and then auto hides it with the designated delay? For the status bar, I tried the following but didn't work:

View status bar, 6 & Delay, 12000 | View status bar, 0

Tamil 27. October 2008, 10:23

Drag & drop SB button to any toolbar. Click to auto hide & click and hold to show/hide status bar.

That worked nicely. Thanks.

Another thing: how to merge the tab and address bars to save some real estate? Basically how to add the address field to the tab bar?

You are quick! Great! Now how to control the width of the button boxes on a toolbar? For example, I have changed the "SB" to "B", but its button size remains the same. Also I moved the address box to the tab bar, but it is not large enough to show the address. Seems its size is fixed.

Tamil 27. October 2008, 13:04

You can't resize address box. Use keyboard shortcut F2 to enter or view long addresses.

Anonymous 27. October 2008, 13:09

Anonymous writes:

But how to size the buttons you have created? I guess there should be a way to do that ...

Tamil 27. October 2008, 14:05

I have changed the "SB" to "B", but its button size remains the same.

I think it is the minimum size of a button.

Yes, I worked on the standard_toolbar too, and tried “Menu Bar" "Status Bar" and "Address Bar". The sizes of these boxes are indepenent of the text parts put inside them, rather I guess decided by the types of these boxes: menu bar, status toolbar and document toobar. The question is which file defines the size of these types. I guess the Opera should know. But I have almost finished configuring Opera the way I wanted to be and many thanks to you.

How to use Quote function:

  1. Select some text
  2. Click on the Quote link
