How to edit menu setup in Opera?

, , , ,

Default menu setup file should not edited as Opera will overwrite it during update. Create a copy of default menu setup as shown below and edit it.

Tools > Preferences... > Advanced > Toolbars > Menu setup > [Select] Copy of Opera Standard (If you don't have Copy of Opera Standard then [Select] Opera Standard > Duplicate)

Open menu\standard_menu (1).ini from profile and edit.

After editing, reload menu by activating your modified setup in Tools > Preferences... > Advanced > Toolbars > Menu setup

Remove unmodified sections from your menu setup and Opera will load missing sections from Opera Standard menu setup.

Duplicate Opera Standard menu setup
Duplicate Opera Standard menu setup

Activate Copy of Opera Standard menu setup
Activate "Copy of Opera Standard" menu setup

Edit Opera menu setup

Very clear thank you. But why do you have to mess around with these friggin mods when a little attention from the folks at Opera would have left it as standard on Windows installations.
I'd prefer that to them wasting time on a half-assed bit torrent modeule or friggin widgets!

Many thanks again.

chris writes: Looking at this in the hope that it might help solve the problem that I'm unable to access the context/ drop-down menus when click on any of the headings in the menu bar (eg. "FILE";"EDIT"; etc) I've tried creating duplicates & looking at the ini files C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\opera6.ini and C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\menu\standard_menu (1).ini The second file is quite lengthy. I was hoping there might be something glaringly obvious there, but I cannot see/interpret it. Prior to this I tried unistalling Opera, then clearing out folders I could find for it, & then got rid of the only registry entry I could find- then installed the latest version. That did not solve it. I've also tried disabling various extensions in Firefox in case they might somehow be affecting Opera. No luck with that. I seems I need some expert advice :) if going to solve this. Any ideas greatly welcomed !

lol. Ok, so I'm stupid, but when I press CTRL+F12, absolutely nothing happens lol. I was hoping this would be an easy 'tweak', but clearly one needs to be almost a developer to replicate the 'tiny menu' feature from FF. Very frustrating indeed.

This does not work in Opera 10 beta. There does not seem to be a "menu" directory and "standard_menu.ini" (in profile).

I can confirm that. I duplicated it and it popped up in the dialog box as "Copy of Opera Standard". There was nothing in my profile directory, but I found the "standard_menu.ini" (not the duplicate) in what looks to me like a new folder: C:\Program Files\Opera\ui

I did a little search and found the duplicate named "standard_menu(1) in folder: C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Application Data\Opera\Opera\menu

But I couldn't figure out how to get any customised stuff to work - a lot of the menu sections look very different to how I remember them. I changed the name in the [info] section, and it showed up of in the prefs...advanced...toolbars dialog box - but how to get it to work is a little beyond me right now Fixed - see edit comment below bigsmile .

Maybe it's disabled in the Beta? (I'm actually on the Unite version - so there's a lot of Unite stuff in that there menu file too.)

I wonder if Opera have some new information coming on how to tweak ini files?

Edit: I got it to work - I forgot to go back in and select it. But I seem to be getting another problem (not a big one). I posted it on the sticky post on the customisation forum, and also mentioned about the new file locations.

I did as you said to edit "Under [Browser File Common Menu] section replace Item, MI_IDM_NEW = New browser window with Item, MI_IDM_NEW = New browser window & Go to homepage," and it does not work. Your help is very appreciated, thank you.

It is not possible to open homepage in new window. I may add this to Opera Launcher.

Opera directory is profile directory. You have to duplicate Opera Standard menu setup to create menu directory.

MAN THIS IS PATHETIC!" I'm right there with ya bro! Less the profanity though, not usually a good idea to cuss someone you want to help you, but I do understand your frustration! I've been a devout Opera user and promoter since 5.xx. Opera was the "People's Browser" that had features that the big boys (I/E and Netscape) failed to implement. Unfortunately is seems that the concept of slim and fast has gone in favor of "Generation I" and the useless eye candy crap and chat crap support. I want a browser, not a social networking chat crap interface. There is plenty of that garbage around. I prefer txt to icons. 1 - I am from the pre-Windoze/pre-mouse (aka DOS) era that had to READ and TYPE what the options were, 2- I find it difficult to "see" what the "lil pics" mean due to my aging vision. Many look too much the same or unrecognizable to be useful to me. I cant be the only Opera/Windoze/Internet user that has these complaints. I wonder if there are any of the original development team left, or did they hire a batch of M$ I/E and Media Player developer rejects? (aka Bloatwares 'R' Us.) Jeez guys get off the bloatware bandwagon and back to slim, fast and *useful feature* rich browser development. I love the duplicate page, % sizing, content blocking, download panel layout, image toggle, flashcrap blocker addon, and most of the customize capabilities. One thing Firefox has ya smoked on though, DYNAMICLY CONTROLLABLE JAVASCRIPT BLOCKING. Get with the proggy guys, js is a fair page TOOL, but just like flash and shock crap, severely abused by a$$hole and ignorant page designers. One other feature I'd like to see added is a means to kill embedded audio file playback. That is extremely annoying. Also bring back the extensions to the cache files. It's hard to find an offending file in the cache now. We want a browser that lets us enjoy the 'net, not fight to keep from wasting bandwidth on garbage. Screw the eye candy, leave that to the skin "script kiddies".

Unregistered user Tuesday, April 27, 2010 6:57:57 PM

swg writes: Ok. New issue. I did find the means to kill audio files (once I got the menus back ) Now I want to have the close X for the tab back at the top of the page. In previous versions, turning off the "close button on tabs" option re-instated it at the top (on the menu bar) Is this another Aw SH*T for Team Opera 10.XX? I dont care for the X on the tab. Same goes for Firefox. It is too easy to hit the X accidentally when the tab bar gets crowded. Yes it's recoverable via the trashcan icon, but an unecessary step if it properly configured. Always fixin stuff that aint broken. You guys work for the govt? Please leave the GUI alone.
