How to add more Speed Dials in Opera?

, , , , ,

Opera has 9 Speed Dials by default but you can add more in Opera 9.50.

  1. Note the path to speeddial.ini file.
  2. Close Opera.
  3. Open speeddial.ini file in any text editor.
  4. Add the following lines and adjust number of rows & columns to your need. If you use widescreen monitor, increase number of columns. Use trial & error method and adjust rows & columns so that Speed Dials will fit on your screen properly.
    [Size]
    Rows=3
    Columns=4
  5. Start Opera.

Keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9 will open Speed Dials 1-9 respectively. To open extra Speed Dials using keyboard shortcut, create new keyboard shortcuts in Application section with action Go to speed dial, X where X is Speed Dial number.

To remove Speed Dial search box,
Above Opera 9.60, Tools > Preferences... > Search > [Select] Speed Dial search engine > Edit... > Details>> > [Disable] Use as Speed Dial search engine
Below Opera 9.60, set Speed Dial Search Type to 0

Is it possible to get rid of the frames around the thumbnails in Speed dial so that they appear a little bigger?

tomasprague 16. June 2008, 12:50

Tamil 16. June 2008, 12:55

The same warning I gave on Larskl's blog is needed also in here:

If you synchronize desktop Opera 9.5 and Opera Mini 4+ on your phone, then do not share speeddials. Using extra speeddials on Opera 9.5 may cut the connection between Opera Mini 4+ and Opera Link server.

Edit: Moreover said on Larskl's copy of this topic:

In case I hadn't mentioned it - the items were, in fact, synced, just not used when received. It seems like it's working in the latest snapshot. But don't take my word for it, try it out for yourselves.

Also - I've no clue how many bad things could happen if the settings on synced machines are different. It's not something that is considered "supported".

Great tip like always Tamil. This is is great for people with larger screens.

Serola 24. June 2008, 18:57

It works even on smaller screens. Speed-dials are scaled to fit into browser window.

Hhmm .... updated today to 9.5. Am using Vista. The speeddial.ini is just not there. It's not where it's suppose to be in c:\program files]opera 9\profile

The rest of the files in that folder are there but the speeddial.ini is not. Any suggestions?

Tamil 1. July 2008, 14:51

Do you use Speed Dial?

Anonymous 1. July 2008, 15:06

Luv7 writes:

Yeap, been using speeddial for a while. Would be nice to have more on that page. Odd that the file is nowhere to be found. lol! Gonna copy it from my XP machine and inserted into the directory where it should be in vista to see if it works. The contents of the file in the xp machine is:

Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

Is that what it's suppose to be?

Thanks!

Tamil 1. July 2008, 15:11

Is that what it's suppose to be?

That is standard text in all Opera configuration files.

You can find [Speed Dial 1], [Speed Dial 2], etc., in speeddial.ini file.

Can you find speeddial.ini file in profile directory?

Anonymous 1. July 2008, 15:15

Luv7 writes:

the file is not in the Opera 9/profile directory or anywhere. Perhaps you can post the text of your file here so I can copy it. My speeddial.ini text running on my other machine ONLY hast what I posted above. It has NO [Speed Dial 1], [Speed dial 2], ect.

Tamil 1. July 2008, 15:21

Can you find opera6.ini file in profile (click profile)?

Create a text file with name speeddial.ini and paste the following.
Opera Preferences version 2.1

; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Size]
Rows=3
Columns=4

Anonymous 1. July 2008, 15:32

Luv7 writes:

The opera6.ini is there in the profile directory. Your text is the same as the text of my speeddial.ini on my other machine with the exception of:

Rows=3
Columns=4

I created a speeddial.ini file as you show changing the default rows and columns to 4 and 5 respectfully but when I reloaded Opera it still shows the default 9. Very very odd!

Tamil 1. July 2008, 15:39

What is path to Speed Dial File?

Anonymous 1. July 2008, 16:00

Luv7 writes:

It says:

"C:\Program Files\Opera 9\profile\speeddial.ini"

But it wasn't there until I just added it. But it made no difference after I added it. I just downloaded this version of Opera today:

Version 9.50 Build 10063

Tamil 1. July 2008, 16:05

Just add a site to Speed Dial, close Opera, copy the contents of speeddial.ini and post.

Anonymous 1. July 2008, 17:12

Luv7 writes:

Tamil 1. July 2008, 17:15

Can you see added Speed Dials when you open Opera?

Anonymous 1. July 2008, 17:55

Luv7 writes:

Ok, I did not see added Dials when I opened Opera. HOWEVER, I did finally correct the problem. I was beginning to suspect that the *.ini file had been corrupted somehow. I downloaded a very small command line program called Ini 1.2. It quickly repaired the file and now it lists all the Speed Dials. I also added a whole bunch of new ones, and it is working like a charm.

Want to THANK YOU so much for your help. Really appreaciate it! :)

In the event someone else ever has a problem with an *.ini file I recommend this small java program called Ini 1.2. The command line I used had to include the UTF-8 paramater because that is what Opera uses, but the program can correct any *.ini file. the following was my command line to repair the Opera file:

java.exe -jar k:\UrFileLocation\com\mindprod\ini\ini.jar "c:\Program Files\Opera 9\profile\speeddial.ini" UTF-8

It's FREE and be downloaded from:
http://mindprod.com/products1.html#INI

THANKS again!

nizamx 4. July 2008, 13:05

Awesome tricks, thanks tamil.

Heureka 5. July 2008, 13:05

If you change your speed dials, Opera puts the Size section at the bottom of the speeddial.ini file, even if you inserted it at the top of that file.

If you reset the rows to 3 and the columns to 3, Opera removes the Size section from the file.

Perke 8. July 2008, 13:15

I put:

Rows=3
Columns=4

There are now 12 speed dials. Problem is i can't edit or remove older (which i allready put) and i can't add on 10,11,12 place nothing. What is wrong?

Tamil 8. July 2008, 14:12

Did you put [Size] before Rows & Columns line?

Perke 8. July 2008, 14:15

1st i put one the top SIZE is on the top of row and columns:

Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

Rows=3
Columns=4

[Speed Dial 1]
...

then i put on the bottom:

Rows=3
Columns=4

---------

It doesn't work brecets with SIZE here when i wrote... I put as on the top of this thread.

Tamil 8. July 2008, 14:22

You can put it anywhere. Did you put Size as shown below?
[Size]

Rows=3
Columns=4

Perke 8. July 2008, 14:31

Yes, i put exactly how you wrote it.

Tamil 8. July 2008, 14:36

Close Opera, rename speeddial.ini file, create a text file speeddial.ini with following contents. Open Opera and check whether you can add/edit Speed Dials.

Opera Preferences version 2.1

; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Size]
Rows=3
Columns=4

Perke 8. July 2008, 14:51

I did it. It doesn't work again. I can't add nothing. When i click right mouse on the quadrate it is nothing happen.

Tamil 8. July 2008, 14:53

Can you add if you remove it?

Perke 8. July 2008, 14:57

I can't bcz right button of mouse doesn't work on quadrate.
Maybe if there is some shortcut on key and then to point with mouse...

I can click on speed dials links and go to that link which i post before changes.

-------

right now i tried to put more rows and columns but i get the same result. I can't edit :frown:

Tamil 8. July 2008, 15:03

It seems problem with right click menu.

CTRL+F12 Advanced Toolbars Menu setup Opera Standard

BTW, you can add/replace a Speed Dial by dragging a tab to Speed Dial.

Perke 8. July 2008, 15:09

I tired that to:
[img]http://c.imagehost.org/0228/08-07-2008_17-05-36_00055.jpg

"BTW, you can add/replace a Speed Dial by dragging a tab to Speed Dial."

I know for this but in this moment it doesn't work too..

Tamil 8. July 2008, 15:16

I don't know what is the problem. You can manually add/edit Speed Dials in speeddial.ini file.
[Speed Dial X]

Title=
Url=http://www.opera.com/
Reload Enabled=0
Reload Interval=0
Reload Only If Expired=0
where X is Speed Dial number.

Perke 8. July 2008, 15:20

Oh... :worried: i am the only one with this problem... Thx for suggestion. I will do. But i will check for few days does someone have the same problem. Please if you see somewhere in forum pm then.

cu and thx one more for your time.

Tamil 8. July 2008, 15:24

Hi
please, is there any way to access sites on the extra addedd speeddials by writing corresponding number into address bar and hitting enter?
It works only up to number 9, at 10 it automatically tries to access http://10/

Tamil 24. July 2008, 15:55

Create new keyboard shortcuts, CTRL+ALT+0 to open Speed Dial 10, CTRL+ALT+1 to open Speed Dial 11, etc.
