How to change Speed Dial thumbnail images in Opera?

, ,

If you don't like the default Speed Dial thumbnail images, you can change them easily.

  1. Convert the image you want to use as thumbnail to PNG format using Microsoft Paint (Open image, File → Save As and select 'Save as type' as PNG) or any image editor. There is no limitation on size of image but 256x192 pixels or less is recommended.
  2. Go to profile\thumbnails directory. For Opera 10 in Windows, go to %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera!\thumbnails directory.
  3. Find and replace already existing thumbnail image with new image with original name.
  4. Set 'Read only' attribute (Right click on image → Properties) to prevent update of thumbnail image when you use reload.
  5. Restart Opera to see new thumbnail image in Speed Dial.

interesting find Tami

papasmurfrock 31. December 2008, 14:29

this looks great and i really want to try it but, for some reason, i can't get this to work on my apple powerbook g4 with leopard operating system.

should it work? i tried following the steps but it is not working for me.

what else should i do?

Tamil 31. December 2008, 14:40

Did you save new image with old image name?

papasmurfrock 31. December 2008, 14:49

i didn't in opera 10 but did in opera 9.63 because i went back and read your instructions and saw that i had missed that.
i had already messed up and changed the name in opera 10 and i don't think there's a way to change it back. maybe there is but i don't know how.
in apple, in order to do what you're saying, i believe i have to go to the file, control-click and go to "More information".
i then went in there and pasted the new picture onto the little icon in the top left of the "more info" page. then i went into "sharing and permissions" and changed the access to "read only".
does that sound right?

Check whether you have images in profile\thumbnails directory. Do you use delete private data & what is your Opera version.

papasmurfrock 31. December 2008, 15:02

i just tried it again in opera 9.63 and i changed the access for me back to read and write and it still doesn't work for me. oh well.

i don't know what else to do. lol.

Tamil 31. December 2008, 15:14

Can you take screenshot of each steps and upload it to figure out what you are doing wrong?

There are images in the thumbnail directory while using Opera. Version is 9.63. Not sure about "delete private data". Where do I find that?

Is it possible to manually set the title for the pages to in some way? Some of the page titles are a bit bloated... E.g. The Guardian reads on my speed dial "Latest news, sport, business, co..."... I'd rahter just have "The Guardian".

 but it is not good.

Create a HTML file with the following contents and add it Speed Dial.
<html><head><title>The Guardian</title></head><body><iframe src ="http://www.guardian.co.uk/" width="100%" height="100%" scrolling="no"></iframe></body></html>

When I click your "here" link it gives me
C:\Documents and Settings\Kulchick\Application Data\Opera\Opera 10 Preview\
but my "Thumbnails" folder is actually located in
C:\Documents and Settings\Kulchick\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera 10 Preview\
I believe it is because I install Opera 10 over Opera 9 and settings are saved from Opera 9.
P.S. It would be awesome if I will be able to drag&drop picture (like site logo) directly to thumbnail in some of next builds.
