Wouldn't it be an idea to use your panel for this? I have mine hidden on the left, you can open it by hovering, it shows the bookmarks and will stay open if you like and keeps your place. It will also open each link in a new tab. Just a thought.

Is this a feature change, a forum thread, or is it something that I could do?
Thanks

In this case, replacing the names of the bookmarks which contain identifiable images to the pipe "|" character saves space, while providing the opportunity to differentiate each folder by a single letter/character.
As for making the contents of personal bar drop-down menus open in background tabs, I have no idea how to make that work.
I have a forum post here if anyone would like to suggest a solution:
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=807202
This is among the greatest usability issues I've encountered since attempting to migrate back after >5 years on Firefox.
Similarly to the bookmark background tab issue is that of the 'Search' highlighted text' function which fails to preserve the current tab, which is also a UX fail to me.
