How to reset master password in Opera?

, , , , , , ,

The following will help you to reset master password if you forget it.

If Tools > Preferences... > Advanced > Security > Use master password to protect saved passwords is not enabled, delete opcert6.dat from profile after closing Opera.

If Tools > Preferences... > Advanced > Security > Use master password to protect saved passwords is enabled, delete/rename opcert6.dat & wand.dat from profile after closing Opera.

If you delete/rename wand.dat, you will lose all stored passwords in wand/password manager.

I don't get it, doesn't renaming the files do the same as deleting them ? Will we still end up losting all our wand passwords ? Is the above tip saying yes you can reset password but you'll lose all your passwords or am I not understanding this.

If "Use master password to protect saved passwords" is not enabled you won't lose your passwords. Otherwise, you will lose them.

Unfortunately, you can't unceck it without the master password, so guess that means you'll lose the wand passwords

Search for those file name including hidden folders.

Anónimo writes: It's not stupid, it's common sense, imagine anyone steals your file wand.dat with all your passwords...if this file is not protected with master password, all your passwords will be stolen: mail, facebook, account bank... It's a necessary security point, if firefox didn't behave the same, firefox would have a horrible security hole there.

Tamil, i wonder if you can help me:

Regarding the "opera's wand", is it possible to change a single password from a website?

I mean, I've changed a login password a website and since "wand" still have the old one i cannot use it. Any hint?

Thanks for your help in advanced smile

Tamil Thursday, May 20, 2010 12:00:22 AM

You have to delete old one (CTRL+F12 > Forms > Password Manager...) and then add new one.

hey Tamil,

do you have any idea on how to backup a master-password protected wand file and move it to a new installation of Opera?

It's not really possible by replacing "opcert6.dat" and "wand.dat" in the new installation (also replaced preferences and everything such as mail, etc and corrected all of the directories in the preferences file to work with new installation in different folder)... Opera asks for master password to access passwords but it doesn't either accept my previous master password or allow me to change the master password.

i can't figure out how to get it work; how to totally backup master password and replace it in a new installation (a new installation in a different folder, disk, volume, etc).

any idea would be appreciated whistle

it's all correct for me too but the only problem is that the new installation doesn't accept my password (i know about preferences and they're also replaced fine; it doesn't ask for a new password; i mean everything's correct but this problem)

i don't know what's the problem with it... sad

Tamil Monday, December 20, 2010 10:59:53 PM

I changed old password with new password.

changing the password makes the wand passwords unusable at all...

doing such a thing like that is equal to deleting the wand file! whistle

oK anyway, it seems there's no way for me to move my passwords to a new Opera installation... so i have to use operapassview to see what websites i had saved password for and save password for 'em again (omg there's so many sites.. oh damn it...)... doh

Opera really needs a "Safe-Mode" or something like that... right

Thanx Tamil
+ Your blog's always great

I mean can I hook them up (copy wand.dat and maybe some other file or copy profile to some other computer) to some other profile and use them? * Are my passwords protected if I setup the master password, but don't set the option to ask for the master password? I mean can lock my wand.dat so it can't be used without knowing the master password, but won't have to provide the password each time I use the wand?

I then moved wand.dat back to the original folder and voila I had my passwords back with a new master password. I don't know how this worked or if it should work but it did work :P (p.s. keep a copy of wand.dat if you are trying this is case the original is corrupted by the attempt).
