How to transfer all settings from one Opera installation to another?

, , , , ,

You can easily transfer all settings from one Opera version to another or from one computer to another by the following.

  1. Open old Opera, note the path to profile & mail directories from Help > About Opera and close Opera.
  2. Repeat the above for the new Opera.
  3. Rename/delete new Opera profile & mail directories.
  4. Copy old Opera profile & mail directories to new Opera profile & mail directories location.
  5. In new Opera, modify paths in following files.
    • (Only for Opera version below 10) profile\opera6.ini (rename/delete is recommended)
    • (Only for Opera version below 10) profile\widgets\widgets.dat (if you use widgets)
    • mail\accounts.ini (if you use feeds/mail)
  6. Start new Opera.

If you use widgets, you also have to edit all paths in the widgets.dat
If you use newsgroups, you have to edit incomingX.txt (where X is the account number of your news account) and fix the paths to *newsrc files.

Thanks.

if you wish to use copy version of opera, install if "for all users" so all files will be in Opera fodler and then you can just copy paste the installation with every settings.. but remember to copy Opera into the same folder you first installed it (default Program Files).. also every new installation made into this folder will keep these settings

Kinda odd that the complete profile is stored in 2 different subtrees on disk.

relative paths would have been nice as well.

Oh, worked great copying a 9.63 profile to a 10 alpha (turbo FTW). Even better, syncing was kaput in opera 9.63 but did start functioning again in 10..

I installed Opera portable on a flash drive. Works ok except that the damned programme keeps putting the above listed files into the C:\Documents & Settings folder. There seems to be no way to change these paths to the flash drive which makes more sense if the thing were truly portable. So - is Opera portable or only semi-so?
If one cannot change the paths to the files it would seem that Opera portable is of little use.

It seems you have installed Opera for multiple users. Open operadef6.ini from Opera installation directory and change Multi User=1 to Multi User=0

Did you change paths in mail\accounts.ini?

Kasyx 7. June 2009, 23:51

These tweaks aren't a huge concern to me. What is a concern is my blacklist of cookies, and my blocked content lists. Where are they hidden?

override.ini & cookies.dat for cookies and urlfilter.ini for blocked content.

Okay thanks, but there's no opera6.ini file in my 9.6 folder. Also, how do I copy wand passwords?

It should be there. Check Opera directory.

Open old Opera, note the path to profile & mail directories from Help → About Opera and close Opera.

Is there a way to a way to get this information if you can't open the old version? The motherboard on my PC died so I can get the data off the hard disk but I have no way to run the program.

Tamil 20. July 2009, 21:50

See the screenshot. Replace Tamil with your username and Opera 9.50 with Opera installation directory name.

Mickeyjoe_irl 20. July 2009, 22:05

Update:

I managed to find Opera files in
C:\Users\Mick-E\AppData\Local\Opera
and
C:\Users\Mick-E\AppData\Roaming\Opera

I copied the entire Opera folders at both locations to the same folders on my new computer.

Everything seems to have come across - sessions, bookmarks, passwords, notes - BUT I have one problem.

All my emails are blank
The subject and addresses are there but the all the message bodies are empty.

Can you please help me find my mail?

Tamil 20. July 2009, 22:09

Is your username is same in old and new hard disk?

Mickeyjoe_irl 20. July 2009, 22:34

Yes, the usernames / paths are the same

Tamil 20. July 2009, 22:40

I have no idea. :frown: Post in forums.

Mickeyjoe_irl 20. July 2009, 22:57

Ok, thanks for the advice.

Mickeyjoe_irl 21. July 2009, 23:30

Well I got my email back. I think the problem may have been caused by copying over the existing mail directory. Renaming the mail directory in ...AppData\Local\Opera\Opera and THEN copying the mail directory from the old hard disk worked.

Tamil 21. July 2009, 23:37

Mickeyjoe_irl 22. July 2009, 22:59

Oh course I could have read your directions properly and done that in the first place. Homer: Doh!

Tamil, your post started a year ago. I am trialling Opera 10 but have installed separately as I am still too scared to upgrade with my emails. Am I wrong or do I remember reading somewhere that the storage of emails is different in V10 ? Would the above procedure work when trying to import mail from 9.6 to 10?

Mail format was changed in Opera 9.5

It should work. Copy mail directory from 9.6 to 10 instead of moving.

Hi Tamil,

I must call on your genius to see if you can answer a question:

I am in windows 7 and want to import feeds from xp on another partition, but I can't find the xml feed files from the 'import feeds' dialogue. I think I've looked everywhere. Do I have to fire up xp and use the export tool from there first?

Cheers,
Ian

Tamil 11. August 2009, 22:33

If you just want feeds lists then you have to export feeds list first and then import them.

Otherwise, copy mail directory and modify paths in accounts.ini file.

experttease 12. August 2009, 10:10

Ok, that's what I thought. Thanks

I'm setting up Win 7 Home and want to transfer the profile folder from my old W2K partition, Opera 10.01 both installations. But looking in About Opera for the profile path in the Win 7 installation, I find no reference to it. Has this changed?
