How to transfer all settings from one Opera installation to another?
Friday, 13. June 2008, 12:23:58
You can easily transfer all settings from one Opera version to another or from one computer to another by the following.
- Open old Opera, note the path to profile & mail directories from and close Opera.
- Repeat the above for the new Opera.
- Rename/delete new Opera profile & mail directories.
- Copy old Opera profile & mail directories to new Opera profile & mail directories location.
- In new Opera, modify paths in following files.
- (Only for Opera version below 10) profile\opera6.ini (rename/delete is recommended)
- (Only for Opera version below 10) profile\widgets\widgets.dat (if you use widgets)
- mail\accounts.ini (if you use feeds/mail)
- Start new Opera.

Path to Opera profile & mail directories

If you use newsgroups, you have to edit incomingX.txt (where X is the account number of your news account) and fix the paths to *newsrc files.

Kinda odd that the complete profile is stored in 2 different subtrees on disk.
relative paths would have been nice as well.
Oh, worked great copying a 9.63 profile to a 10 alpha (turbo FTW). Even better, syncing was kaput in opera 9.63 but did start functioning again in 10..

I installed Opera portable on a flash drive. Works ok except that the damned programme keeps putting the above listed files into the C:\Documents & Settings folder. There seems to be no way to change these paths to the flash drive which makes more sense if the thing were truly portable. So - is Opera portable or only semi-so?
If one cannot change the paths to the files it would seem that Opera portable is of little use.

I updated my opera6.ini file to point the default maildir to the location of my opera email... in 9.64, but upon starting Opera it still does not list my accounts or email. Any suggestions?

Is there a way to a way to get this information if you can't open the old version? The motherboard on my PC died so I can get the data off the hard disk but I have no way to run the program.

I managed to find Opera files in
C:\Users\Mick-E\AppData\Local\Opera
and
C:\Users\Mick-E\AppData\Roaming\Opera
I copied the entire Opera folders at both locations to the same folders on my new computer.
Everything seems to have come across - sessions, bookmarks, passwords, notes - BUT I have one problem.
All my emails are blank
The subject and addresses are there but the all the message bodies are empty.
Can you please help me find my mail?

I must call on your genius to see if you can answer a question:
I am in windows 7 and want to import feeds from xp on another partition, but I can't find the xml feed files from the 'import feeds' dialogue. I think I've looked everywhere. Do I have to fire up xp and use the export tool from there first?
Cheers,
Ian

Otherwise, copy mail directory and modify paths in accounts.ini file.

Been using Opera for over 10 years now. Each time I upgrade to a newer version, my wand data, contacts, biikmarks, etc., successfully transferred. This has Not been the case with Opera 10. I've imported my bookmarks, contacts, and mail, but can't find find my wand data. Can I just cut (from the v9.64 backup I have in MyDocuments) and paste into v10? Thank you.

Just after my above post, re wand data, I went to my installed Opera 10 directory, and found wand(and all the rest) are there.
However, when I go to Tools/Preferences/Forms/Password Manager, Forms and Password Manager are empty. Advice needed please. Thank you.

Since the thread pops up when you google "opera change mail directory" (I strongly dissaprove of having my mail directoy on C:\ and have this elsewhere
After going almost nuts trying to locate where on earth the mail directory setting can be accessed (oper6.ini is now defunct with Opera 10 thank God)
TYPE OPERA:CONFIG
that's the place
