How to view Indian language Unicode characters properly with Opera in Windows?

, , , , , , , , , ,

To view Indian language web pages and Opera menus properly, Unicode support has to be enabled in Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems.

In Windows XP, Start > Control Panel > (Date, Time, Language and Regional Options) > Regional and Language Options > Language > [Enable] Install files for complex script and right-to-left-languages (including Thai) > OK

Windows XP Regional and Language Options
Enable 'Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)' in Windows XP

In Windows 2000, Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options > General > Language settings for the system > [Enable] Indic > OK

Restart the system for the new setting to take effect.

Windows installation CD may be required to install Unicode support files.

up

A few years ago, I wanted the same but with Japanese characters. Since then, everytime I reinstall my Windows I install those packages.

Is there any way to enable unicode support for Opera in Ubuntu. I am forced to use Firefox to read websites in Malayalam, Tamil or other languages. Opera is the best browser for Ubuntu. It is light (runs great in my old laptop!), feature rich and customizable. I loved it both in Windows and now in Linux.

Also I would like to know if there is any way to enable bookmarklet support without permitting javascripts in a particular website. I use bookmarklets for using delicious bookmarks and other functions though I have disabled javascripts for security reasons.

Thanks for your excellent tips and advice. Keep up the good work Mr. Tamil. (I'm curious to know your real name and see your real pic though) Thanks for spreading our great culture; you make our nation proud.

I think it is the bug in Opera that mis-handles the Unicode specification. If a document is supported on a system level (which is the case with the Indic scripts on winXP-SP3 with the usp10.dll v1.420.2600.5512 library) and all other programs display these scripts correctly - why Opera does not?
