I use "find next" to find each "8", and after the third one on the page is highlighted, I use the go back arrow to go to another page. I then return to the page using the go forward arrow. With previous versions of Opera that third "8" would still be highlighted, but with Opera 9 the search begins anew. At least this is the behavior I get using "F3" as well as the inline search box.

Thanks for the f3 "find next" tip! somehow the "find in page" search box disappeared when I upgraded my browser. I've tried using the inline search but it just wasn't the same without a "find next" key.

You could hold shift and press F3, this will find the previous mention of the text you typed. When its performed from the start of a page it will start at the bottom and find the last instance of your searched for text (a time saver when its a long page and the text your searching for is fairly common).

I know this isn't exactly what you were after, but it does make things quicker if you know that what your trying to find is near the end of the page.

A question about inline search in address bar ?
When I type for example "g opera" in address bar I get all the search results about Opera.
I am using Opera 10.10 and I wanted to add some other search engines (like Bing, some online dictionaries and some other sites but non of them except google, wikipedia, amazon and ebay are really working?
I am using Windows 7 32 bit, Professional Edition.

Any idea how to fix it ?

Tamil Thursday, December 24, 2009 12:06:11 PM

How did you add search engines?

HydraH writes: Hi there. Ever since I upgraded Opera from the 9 series (like 9.64) to 10, there is a feature that has been lost. I made a post at the Opera forums as well, but there was no answer. Previously, in "Notes" when we pressed Ctrl + F, a dialog box would open and typing anything in it would highlight all instances of that text in the selected note. In the newer versions, the dialog box has gone, to be replaced by Quick Find. But in Quick Find, when I type something, it only shows which notes contain the selected text (hiding the other notes), and after this, I have to go to each particular note to manually look up the item. As a result, every time I want to find anything now, I have open that selected note and select all and then paste it in notepad and search from there :( Is there any way to get the dialog box back in Notes? I don't know much about tweaking, but in Tools > Preferences > Shortcuts > Keyboard Setup, I edited the keyboard and in the Advanced section, I added a line in the Notes widget - "f ctrl" - "Find", but still nothing works.

Hi Tamil

I'm finding the 'Find in Page' function in v.10.50 (via the Search box on the main toolbar) does not immediately search the page as the user is typing the text - now the user has to type the full word\phrase and hit the Search button. Is it possible to get back to old functionality in 10.50 with some tweak?

This is the Search.ini entry (in the Application Data directory):
[Search Engine 1]
UNIQUEID=368291005FC211DD8DE6B90756D89593
Name=&FindInPage
URL=
Query=
Key=f
Is post=0
Has endseparator=1
Encoding=
Search Type=12
Verbtext=0
Position=-1
Nameid=71103

(And why Opera changed something that worked flawlessly already in previous versions!?)

Why don't you use the method mentioned in post?

Anonymous writes: I don't know if the internet would be the same for me without Opera and I appreciate the developers very much. Opera is so important for me and it is leagues ahead of other browsers. But for a user that is used to all the comfort of Operas, this new inline search behavior is a real headache. Looks like the search features of Opera have been downgraded. It's like a micro$0ft update :) seriously thinking of going back to an earlier version 10.x. BTW It's nice to be able to install more than one versions of opera at the same time. I always keep a second one installed for such conditions. If I come back to the searching problems: Here's a list of the problems I find: - When I pressed ctrl+f in the earlier versions I could get a pop-up search box and if I close it and open it again in another tab, my search string would be staying there, i.e. I wouldn't have to write the same thing again and again. - Also as long as I wouldn't close that box (or window, if you prefer) it would stay there when I switch to another tab so that I wouldn't have to open it again. - The earlier inline "finding text" BOX (which came up when I hit "." or ",") would take only a little space on the lower left corner, while the new one takes the whole width of the screen. - Although mentioned and solved in the earlier comments, the toolbar coming from the top and pushing the webpage down makes you lose focus while the dimming "feature" makes you feel you're in the land of m$. Ok, I went a litle harsh on this. - One last thing I'd really prefer not to see is the searched &found green highligted word having a border around with a dropping shadow. I felt really much clear with the earlier "only highlighting" feature that was without the border&shadow.

Thanks Tamil, I am using the method mentioned in the post and it's working fine but I prefer to have it as it was pre-10.50....

with 'Find in Page' as the default search in the search toolbar and hitting Enter brings me on to the next found. I still have Find in Page as the default in search.ini and it does appear as the default in the toolbar but typing in something in the toolbar search box just brings up the search provider list. Can't understand why this has changed as it worked just fine. rolleyes

There are some great tips on this page guys! smile

Opera has been my 1st choice of browser for over 10 years, due to its speed, simplicity, ease of use, innovative features, size, etc.

It seems lately that more and more useless eye-candy is being added by the Opera developers to attract users who are more impressed with pretty pictures and stupid animation than actual functionality. There's even a stupid animation right in the middle of this text input box which is getting in the way - WHY?

I'm currently running opera-10.53-6330.x86_64.linux but for the first time ever, I'm finding myself using Firefox more and more because Opera is becoming so crippled.

I realise this is only a beta, so things could change a lot before the final release, but I really can't understand why the developers would want to change / remove all the essential features that differentiate this browser from all the others and instead, fill it with useless crap that impedes productivity and likely only appeals to primary school kids.

Névtelen writes: Dear Tamil, Your blog is one of the best places for finding in-depth information for Opera browser currently. As a user of Opera for more than 10 years, I'm also feeling that Opera is moving in the wrong direction with all the bells-and-whistles. The main problem is not that feature upgrades are happening, but that there are no opera:config settings to provide downwards compatibility for the professional users (which set correlates to the visitors of this very blog, I guess ;-)). For me, Opera is way ahead of other browsers for only one very solid reason: ergonomics. To get to the point: current inline search is not only visually new, but some old features are really getting lost here. For example, ctrl-f, dot, and comma searches all loose their previous search strings if I navigate between pages. As a consequence, I cannot use F3 to find the same string in multiple tabs (switching between tabs, of course). To keep up with compatibility and ergonomics at the same time, I would think that a opera:config setting to provide this behavior would be just as important as customizing dim search opacity (which I did, along with moving the find toolbars to the bottom, so that pages are not moving just because I happen to search in them...). From a global perspective, I'm hoping that ergonomics as a priority is not dismissed by the Opera crew, and there would be more configuration possibilities for compatibility in the future...

My question would be if there's a way to keep the last search term for all tabs, even if you have closed the tab you typed the search word in? I hope you know what I mean: when I press F3 Opera sometimes looks for the last typed word, sometimes it doesn't, and when the find toolbar is open on another tab it uses that word and not the last one. It's very irritating when you're looking for the same word on various pages. Best wishes, Angela

With all of the lost features in Opera is there anyplace I
might find someone or a group who offers fixes or workarounds
that I can implement even if it means using another software
program? I'm still using 8x sometimes for the easy key boarding features that were lost in 9x

eg: From 10.10 to 10.6x Opera lost speak function. I downgraded to 10.10 to get it back but a workaround would
be to use another software to read my 10.6x opera page.

If all of the workarounds and solutions are in one place I'd
like to see it. Even a site that simply put the urls in
one place would be super useful.

Suggestion. If you know of a site that has a workaround consider putting a keyword that's not easily found in a
google search that will key in on a site displaying the
fixes.

eg. the word - metahsner

does not show up in a google search but put on a site with
google fixes I assume that text string would show up and
the string would easily be shared quickly among opera users.

Ok. Well Thanks. : )
