Tips for Opera browser since 2005

Login to two accounts of same website simultaneously using Opera private tab

, , , ,

Many users maintain multiple accounts on different websites. If you are already logged in on a site you can't login to another account of same website simultaneously because cookies are shared between tabs.

Opera 10.50 & above supports private browsing and cookies are not shared between normal & private tabs. So you can login to two accounts of same website simultaneously by using normal tab to login to one account and private tab (Right click on tab > New Private Tab) to login to another account.

You can also use the following methods to login to another account simultaneously (works in old versions).

  • Install and use another copy of Opera in different directory.
  • Create and use another profile.

It would be better if cookies would be individual for EACH private tab - thus it would be possible to login to many accounts in a single Opera! rolleyes

Well, I did not know about it. This is a great opportunity!

So far as I know, cookies are not shared among any private tabs...? Or are there exceptions to make popups and such work?

Keith Batesnewlifenarrabri Thursday, April 1, 2010 10:33:26 PM

That's brilliant!

I don't think you can install two of the same version of an app under Linux. sherlock. But the private browsing should work if that feature is available on the Linux version! up.
Or you could install the Windows version under wine, but it runs kinda slow unless you have a major piece of hardware to run it on! lol.

You can always run opera from terminal with (see manpage for details):
opera -pd /foo/bar

But I'm unable to check right now if it will run second Opera instance at the same time.

Mad Scientistqlue Wednesday, April 7, 2010 7:43:32 PM

Opera uses a lock file to prevent multiple instances. So does Firefox.
sherlock.

szarpaj Wednesday, April 7, 2010 8:48:01 PM

@Aadil
That's right, but the lock is in your „pd”. I just changed it with „-pd /foo” and got two instances of Opera running.

@Tamil
Btw nice tip. (:

Perhaps there are annoying people who like to click the "always remember" checkbox? Or you have a second email account, used only for subscribing to web services?
