  1. How to disable default blank tab?
    Enable Allow Empty Workspace [or] Tools → Preferences... → Advanced → Tabs → [Enable] Allow windows with no tabs

  2. How to disable BitTorrent?
    Disable Enable under BitTorrent.

  3. I can't see Create search... when I right click on search box.
    You are using old menu setup, update it by adding Item, 1560773594 = Create search under [Edit Widget Popup Menu] [or] Tools → Preferences... → Advanced → Toolbars → Menu setup → [Select] Opera Standard

  4. Create search doesn't work.
    When you create search enter Keyword.

  5. I lost my custom search engines after upgrade.
    Close Opera, open profile directory, delete search.ini, rename search.ini.bak to search.ini, open it and change File version=6 to File version=8.

  6. When I upgrade, windows installer gives error message.
    Try Classic Installer [or] install in a separate directory and copy your settings. See Migrating custom settings from one Opera installation to another & Migrating email from one Opera installation to another.

  7. How to set number of search results?
    Set Number Of Hits.

  8. When I go back to the previous page it reloads.
    Set History Navigation Mode to 3. See JavaScript and History Navigation for more information.

  9. I am unable to rename feeds.
    Bug. (Fixed in build 8509). See B9.8493 Edited feed names are not saved. Note path to mail directory, close Opera, open incoming[].txt and check whether it contains your feeds. If yes, change the Name of the feed.

  10. When I zoom, text spacing increases.
    Bug (Fixed in build 8505). See Too big text spacing in zoom mode (bug-214385).

  11. Is there a way to switch the keyboard shortcuts for new tab/new window/paste and go/bookmark page?

  12. When I open downloads, Opera downloads to ../cache4/temporary_downloads/ instead of download directory.
    See Temporary Downloads.
    Warning: The contents of Temporary Download Directory will be emptied even if you change the location when you Delete private data or when cache set to Empty On Exit.

  13. Save image... on right click menu brings transfer window and downloads that file.
    Bug (Fixed in build 8509). Use Ctrl+Click on image. See Opera [8455] and image saving.

    Clear Force Encoding.

    Right click → Edit site preferences... → Network → Browser Identification [or] Tools → Preferences… → Advanced → Content → Manage site preferences... → Add... → [Type] Site → Browser Identification
    If you want it in Quick preferences F12 do the following.
    If you don't know how to edit menu setup see this. Remove semicolon for the following items under [Quick Preferences Menu]

    Disable Clear bookmark visited time in Delete private data [or] set Read-only attribute to images directory in profile.
    If you concerned about privacy don't use this as Opera saves favicons for all visited sites.

    Press keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+T and click Hide Speed Dial button at bottom right corner [or] set Speed Dial State to 3. This will also remove Show Speed Dial button in bottom of blank tab.

    Add this JavaScript to your bookmarks and use.

  66. How to install/use spell checker?
    If you have administrator privileges install Aspell. See Spell-checking With Opera. Otherwise use OSpell UserJS.

  67. What is difference between Opera Classic Installer, English (US) & International installers?
    Classic installer uses WISE installer. It is the best if you use only English, its a smaller download and you can install it without administrator privileges.

    English (US) is a MSI package. It better supports network installations & integrates Opera more with Windows, to better support Windows install, uninstall and upgrade.

    International is same as above but it has more language support.

  68. Some images are not loading.
    Reduce Max connections to a server in Tools → Preferences... → Advanced → Network

    Disabled by default. Tools → Preferences... → Advanced → Shortcuts → Enable single-key shortcuts

  78. How to disable system tray icon in Windows?
    If you don't use mail/RSS, disable Show E-mail Client [or] Right click on Opera shortcut → Properties → Target → Add /notrayicon at end so it looks like the following
    "C:\Program Files\Opera\Opera.exe" /notrayicon
    When you hide Opera, click Opera shortcut to restore Opera with a new tab.

  79. What happened to panel toggle in Opera 9.50?
    Disabled by default. Tools → Apperance → Panels → Show panel toggle at edge of window

  80. Where can I download old standard skin for Opera 9.50?
    Download from Opera 9 Classic Skin page.

    Keyboard shortcuts were changed in Opera 9.50. See Changes in keyboard shortcuts between Opera 9.27 and Opera 9.50.
    To get Opera 9.2x keyboard shortcuts, Tools → Preferences... → Advanced → Shortcuts → Keyboard setup → Opera 9.2 Compatible

  82. I upgraded to Opera 9.50 and all my favicons are gone.
    Favicons from previous version won't be shown because Opera 9.50 uses new format (idx file stores favicon information for each web page).

  83. I can't find my notes at Opera Link.
    Currently, there is no web interface to see notes. Available from Sep 22, 2008.

    Click Show other versions link at Download page or download from ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/.

    Use classic installer [or] install Opera 9.50, open operadef6.ini from Opera installation directory and change Multi User=1 to Multi User=0.

    Disable Addressbar Content Search.

    Disable Auto Dropdown. This will remove dropdown completely including typed-in address dropdown, auto-completion dropdown, bookmarks in dropdown, etc. To disable bookmarks in dropdown, disable Show Bookmarks In Addressfield Autocompletion.

  88. How to move New Tab button to left side of tabs in Opera 9.50?
    Hold down Shift key, drag & drop New Tab button to left side of tabs, then right click on New Tab button on right side of tabs and select Remove From Toolbar.

  89. Why Cache, Images and Mail directories moved to Local Settings directory in Opera 9.50?
    Cache, Images and Mail directories have been moved to Local Settings folder in order to limit amount of data in the roaming profile.
    You can change Cache Directory4 & Mail Root Directory (Make a backup, change and restart Opera) or install Opera with single profile for all users (See Opera FAQ #85).

  90. What happened to cache file extensions in Opera 9.50?
    Removed. Use opera:cache with advanced search, thumbnails & sorting.

  91. What happened to system integrated right-click menu in transfers?
    Removed. See Transfers Tab Shell Context Menu Workaround. Support Restore the System Integrated right-click menu in the Transfers window wish. (Readded in build 10100)

  92. How to disable transfers tab when saving images in Opera 9.50?
    Not possible. Use Opera 9.51.

  93. How increase the width of search box in Opera?
    Not possible but you can use address field for search by typing <search engine keyword><space><search term> example: g opera tips will search for opera tips in Google.

  98. I'm getting following warning message in Windows 95 or Windows 98.

    The system library Msimg32.dll is missing or too old, so certain transparency effects will be slow and possibly not drawn correctly.
    Obtaining the library from a Windows ME installation and placing it in your Windows system directory will fix this.

    Download msimg32.dll from here and place it inside Opera installation directory [or] disable Show MSIMG32 Warning.

    You can enable the automatic redirection in Preferences.

    This happens when link matches an entry in content blocker. Disable content blocker and try.

I have a fellow teacher who had 9.10 and it crashed. Then she updated it to 9.61. Opera is taking a lot of time loading pages and frequently stalls "Not Responding". I looked in the profile and found hundreds of .tmp files that were dated on 8/24/2008 when the program crashed. Example: opr209B.tmp

Would it be a good idea to uninstall Opera and start over fresh?

We did reset the Profile
(saved notes.adr, Closed Opera, deleted opera6.ini, opened it again.)

and Opera seemed to be working a bit better, but still frequent "hour glasses", (Not Responding), and very slow overall operation.

We have over 700 instructors and nearly all of them are using Opera because of the notes feature. So their notes is about the only thing many of them are using. Fast loading web pages and notes are essential.

Any ideas about when it is best to clean out Opera and start over?

Backup required files (notes.adr, opera6.adr, etc.) and delete profile folder after closing Opera. Open Opera and disable remember content on visited pages in CTRL+F12 → Advanced → History

No need to uninstall both will use different profile folders if installation directory is different (example C:\Program Files\Opera 9.10\ & C:\Program Files\Opera 9.27\).

Hi Tamil,

I have a doubt regarding Opera Sync.

Say I delete one of my bookmarks in Opera & I sync that with the opera database. What happens when i open opera in another(2nd) system where I had previously synced the Bookmarks from Opera Database (& this will have the deleted Bookmark). When I sync again (in 2nd system), Will the Previously deleted bookmark be again added to Opera Database.

Sorry if i am confusing.

I am using Opera 9.61 (Swedish version) and "Opera Link" synchronization has stopped working after upgrading to 9.61.

When I go to the link.opera.com homepage it is possible to sign in perfectly fine but the webbrowser fails to synchronize given the same user credentials.

Is there a work-around to get Opera syncing to function? It seems to be a bug in this version.

It seems (somewhat reasonably) that just editing the opera(def6)ini files to make it portable is not enough, though your last answer seems to fix the only problem I can find.

Sometimes it gets the drive letter wrong, for saving bookmarks, but meh, I'm fine with adding stuff to opera link. Toolbars maybe, but i'll try a bit more.

Dear Tamil,

Your suggestions have been of so much help to our school in the past so I have another one for you.

A teacher friend is using Opera 9.62. She will be grading assignments and it acts like it is checking for something about every 5 to 10 minutes. The hour glass shows up. Sometimes the Top border says Opera is not responding. But within about a minute, it seems to clear so that she can continue until it "hesitates" again. This goes on all day and it does it regardless whether she is in the course or just browsing the Internet.

I spent several hours checking settings, monitoring her "hesitations" in Opera. She is not using mail nor any RSS feeds.

Can you think of anything else that might be causing this or what I might try to stop it?

We just did that and Opera is still running for about 5-10 minutes then is hesitating for about 20-30 seconds until it is running again.

Additional information: When it "freezes" Opera's cpu goes from 0 to about 30 but the mem stays at 148,060 k
