Recover Opera wand passwords using OperaPassView

, , , , , ,

Opera provides you an option of saving the passwords to Password Manager, so that you don’t have to type that again. After some time, you may forget the password. Unfortunately, Opera has no option to show saved passwords.

If Opera Password Manager fills password form field, you can view password using bookmarklet but Password Manager won't fill user name and/or password when

  • URL of login page changes.
  • User name and/or password form field name changes.
In such times you should use third party tool to recover the forgotten passwords.

OperaPassView is a small password recovery tool that decrypts the content of the Opera Web browser password file, wand.dat and displays the list of all Web site passwords stored in this file. You can easily select one or more passwords in the OperaPassView window, and then copy the passwords list to the clipboard or save it into text/html/csv/xml file.

If wand is protected by master password OperaPassView won't show passwords. Disable Tools > Advanced > Security > Use master password to protect saved passwords to view passwords.

this was exactly what made me use the master password feature in Opera!!! kinda fun (ahem!) to use on other unsuspecting buddies running Opera ( to find out how many of them still use their ex-s names as password! -wink- )

deadHarlequin Sunday, May 30, 2010 6:53:31 PM

there is also around a command line tool called unwand which does the same thing for anyone who doesnt want to be bothered with installations etc.

No need to install OperaPassView. Download, unzip and run OperaPassView.exe

I've been looking for something like this for years. Thanks for the link, Tamil, without you Opera would be much less usable. More thanks to Nir Sofer, the author, and Remco on freenode irc ##opera for pointing me to this page.

Probably not, I would settle for 2 and get things more pristine like Opera use to be.
I have to say that the last build of 10.60a1 3403 was the cleanest build and install I have had since 10.10. So far I haven't had any crashes and everything I have tried is working excellent. .... qudos Opera!

Runs in wine well too.
you can use the following to back up wand.dat file easily.

Ubuntu
file://localhost/home/Name/.opera/wand.dat

Windows 7
file://localhost/C:/Users/Name/AppData/Roaming/Opera/Opera/

Just save as a bookmark and rename Name with your name
