Useful opera:config (Opera Preferences Editor) entries

Opera's preferences window Tools > Preferences... provides access to preferences the are most commonly adjusted. There are many more options that are available for you to adjust, however, they are hidden and can be found in the built-in preferences editor.

To access the hidden preferences editor, type opera:config into the address bar and press enter. To learn more about each opera:config entry, click the help link at top right side in the preferences editor.

The following are some useful opera:config entries.

Entry Description
BitTorrent|Enable Enables file distribution using BitTorrent
ECMAScript Available memory for JavaScript engine in kB
Highlighted Background Background of text that is highlighted (after a search for instance)
Highlighted Background Unfocused Background of text that is highlighted but has no focus
Highlighted Text Color for text that is highlighted
Highlighted Text Unfocused Color for text that is highlighted but has no focus
Selected Background9.50 Background of text that is selected
Selected Text9.50 Color for text that is selected
DiskCache|Size Disk cache size in kilobytes
Frames Show Active Shows active frame with border
IFrames Enables inline frames
ISP|Id! Custom user agent substring
User agent with custom string 'Tamil'.
Opera/9.50 (Windows NT 5.1; U; Tamil; en)
Enable Content Blocker Enables content blocker
Enable HostName Web Lookup Use Web service to search if server name lookup fails
HostName Web Lookup Address URL to Web search to use if server name lookup fails
Password Lifetime Expiry time in minutes for master password in memory
Keep Entries Days Days to keep entries in transfer manager
Addressbar Content Search9.50 Enables address bar content search
Allow Empty Workspace Permits the last tab to be closed
Alternative Page Cycle Mode Page cycle mode to use when cycling without displaying list of pages
0 = Recently used order
1 = Page bar order
Application Icon! Windows Full path to alternative icon file. See How to customize Opera icon & title?
Auto Dropdown Allows auto completion dropdown
Auto Mail Panel Toggle11.10 Shows Opera mail panel when reading mail/feeds
opera:config#UserPrefs|BrowserJavaScript Whether to download and use the browser.js file. Enable by setting to 1, Opera will then download the file and set to 2.
0 = Never download or use
2 = Use and check for updates weekly
1 = browser.js signature invalid. On next check for update, a new browser.js will be downloaded and the value set to 2.
Cache Directory4 Full path to cache directory
Check For New Opera Keeps track of weekly check for new updates. Set 0 to disable. See How to disable check for new version of Opera?
Chrome Integration Drag Area10.50 See Reduce integration drag area in non-maximized Opera window
Chrome Integration Drag Area Maximized10.50 Set 0 to remove 1 pixel above the tabs
Color List Row Mode Alternate background colours in lists.
1 = light blue (default)
3 = white (off)
Dim Search Opacity10.50 Set 0 to disable
Doubleclick to Close Tab10.00 Enables double click for closing of tabs
Ellipsis In Center Shorten button and tab names in the middle
Enable Edit Triple ClickUNIX Handling double clicks in text edit fields.
0=Double-click text to select all
1=Double-click to select word, triple-click to select all
Enable Mouse Flips9.51 Enables mouse flips (FlipBack & FlipForward mouse gestures)
Enable UI Animations10.50 Enables tabs & forms slide in/out and fade in/out animations
Enable Usage Statistics Enables usage statistics sent to Opera. See Help us help you! for more info.
Enable config URL Enables opera:config
If you want to enable opera:config after disabling, close Opera, delete the line Enable config URL=0 in opera6.ini/operaprefs.ini file.
Hide URL Parameter11.00 Hides URL parameter in address field.
www.google.com/search?q=Tamil will be shown as www.google.com/search
History Navigation Mode 1 = Automatic mode
2 = Compatible mode
3 = Fast mode

Ignore Target Disallows documents to create new windows/pages
Max Direct History Lines Maximum numbers of typed-in URLs
Maximum Font Size Do not allow fonts larger than value in pixels
Min Allowed GDI ResourcesWindows Attempt to free system resources when low by value in percentage
Number Of Hits< 10.60 Preferred number of search results per page.
0 = Use search engine's own default
Google only. To work in other engines, you have to append &x=%i to search engine address where x is search query name for number of results. For Google, http://www.google.com/search?q=%s&num=%i
Open Dialog Under MouseUNIX Launch dialog where mouse pointer is already located
PageBar Open URL On MiddleClick Opens URL in clipboard when creating a new page
opera:config#UserPrefs|Scale Default document zoom, in percent
Scroll Is Pan9.50 Enables grab-and-scroll mode. Alternatively, hold down Ctrl+Alt and then click & drag the page to enable on the fly scroll.
Enable Scroll Marker9.60-10.60 Enables scroll marker. Scroll maker will indicate the previous position of the bottom or top of the page after a scroll action.
0 = Off
1 = Show when reaching the bottom or top of the page, and when the last scroll action scrolls less than a full page's amount
2 = Always show when scrolling
Shows Address In Caption! Displays URL rather than page title in title bar
Show Bookmarks In Addressfield Autocompletion9.60 Enables bookmarks in the address field auto-completion dropdown
Show Dropdown Button In Addressfield11.50 Displays dropdown button in address field
Show Exit Dialog10.10 Set 2 to hide Opera instead of closing when you exit Opera
Show History In Addressfield Autocompletion10.50 Enables history in the address field auto-completion dropdown
Show Tray Icon! 10.52 Enables tray icon
Speed Dial Search Type< 10.60 Set 0 to remove Speed Dial search bar (versions below 9.50 only)
Speed Dial State Available options:
0 = Folded ("Show speed dial" message)
1 = Normal view
2 = Read Only (Hides "What is Speed Dial" & "Show speed dial" buttons)
3 = Disabled
Title Main caption on title bar. Shows standard caption by default; Page title and Opera. Add "%s" to display Opera's build number. See How to customize Opera icon & title?
Use Integrated Search Uses available multi-search field or "Find in page" field instead of dialog for "Find in page"
Use Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails10.50 Enables multiple thumbnails when hovering Opera taskbar icon

Hi Tamil, i have recently upload opera 9.27 to 9.5.
I want to synchronize my opera, but the menu File->Synchronize does not exists! do you know if it is some configuration mistake, or a bug or whatever?

Addressbar Content Search - Enable address bar content search
Visited Pages - Enables content search

Those two could be clearer.

Addressbar Content Search - Determines whether to search the contents of the database in the addressbar.
Visited Pages - Controls whether full-page content should be indexed or not.

You should not replace default dialog.ini with my dialog.ini file as it contains only modifications. See the instructions in More color schemes in Opera.

However, several opera:config links (with %7C in them) seem to be broken, for example
Highlighted Background, Highlighted Text
I guess you know how to fix them smile

Are there some requirements for 'PageBar Open URL On MiddleClick'? Can't figure out if/how it works on Opera 11.52 for Win XP.

EDIT: Solved smile The skin I use has located the trash icon right next to 'open new tab'. So, I need to middle click on right side of the trash icon.
