Thanks! I never realized just how much you can accomplish with mouse gestures. Is there a way in Opera 9.01 to always have the search bar open its results in a new tab, without having to do the shift+enter combo? I know that it's possible to uncheck "re-use current tab," but I only want this to affect the search bar, and not all the tabs in general.

Tamil Friday, August 11, 2006 5:41:31 AM

AFAIK it is not possible.

islamguidedotcom Saturday, August 12, 2006 11:23:06 PM

drygnfyre: I think you can default to open search results in new tab through editing the google's preferences in the search page itself. i.e Check the Open in new page checkbox. However, this feature opens it in a new tab and steals focus from the search page. This inevitably makes open all browse later rather difficult. Any workarounds greatly appreciated.....

Currently, I use a customized mouse gesture. Right click the link and drag down or up or right or left to open in new background tab. Though it's nice to have the above option to single click when opening in background tab since its a lot more frequent.

btw, in some browsers like konqueror, enabling this option automatically opens the new search results in a background tab.

Look at what i just put together:

[Hotclick Popup Menu]
Item, Google = copy & new page & go to page, "http://www.google.com/search?q=%c"
Item, Google images= copy & new page & go to page, "http://images.google.com/images?q=%c"

And it even works, woohoo smile.

del123 Friday, September 1, 2006 12:52:09 AM

And here's the open background work around:

Item, Google background = copy & new page & go to page, "http://www.google.com/search?q=%c" & cycle to next page
Item, Google images background = copy & new page & go to page, "http://images.google.com/images?q=%c" & cycle to next page

del123 Friday, September 1, 2006 1:05:16 AM

For the second one to work you first have to set:
opera:config#UserPrefs|WindowCycleType to 2 (no list)
opera:config#UserPrefs|AlternativePageCycleMode to 0 (recently used order)

islamguidedotcom Saturday, September 2, 2006 8:14:19 AM

del123, Neat.. one drawback however, that entails having to right click the link first; somewhat as tedious as my hold right click, move somewhere approach.

Firefox has this option through an extension called tab mix plus. There's an option to force all targets leading to pages outside of the current domain to be opened in a new tab and another which forces all pages in the current domain to open in the same page itself. The above coupled with open in background tab(customizable in what situation; search bar, address bar etc.) addresses the above problem.

Hope a similar feature could be ported to opera..

To disable bookmarks open in new tab, CTRL+F12 Advanced Tabs [CHECK] Reuse current tab

You can't middle click on bookmarks.

Hi,
I have serious objection on putting the Lord Hanuman's image on this post like this.
This seems to be an insult of such a greate personality.
The work he has carried should not be represented in the shameful way.
I request every body in this group should oppose this.

I have a serious question why only hindu gods are always shown in this dirty way ?
And stop doing all these nonce.
Mr. Opera find some good role model to suite your need to advertise you. But don't heart anybody feeling specially in relegious matter.

Hi, Tamil:

Thanks for your attention. This is a real shame. Browsers like Firefox (through a special extension, ok) and K-Meleon feature this option. It's high time a famous and widely used browser like Opera implemented this option. Can't understand why it doesn't offer it yet.

My best regards.

One more for the "keyboard shortcuts" list: Shift + underlined selector character on bookmarks menu. (Unfortunately the Shift + Ctrl variant does not open in background.)

? Real difference, or misunderstanding? Meant Shift+Ctrl+(underlined character on bookmarks menu); doesn't work here.

Alt+b drops the bookmark menu; look at it - each item has a character underlined. You can select an item using (cursor plus click), (arrow keys plus Enter), or the underlined character.

I installed Opera 9.64 today. I was hoping it would fix this problem from Opera 9.63: Shift+Click does not work for site search. The search results page opens in the same tab. I am referring to the custom site search buttons: http://operawiki.info/PowerButtons#sitesearch - When one clicks the custom button a search window pops up. One enters search terms and clicks OK. Google then searches the site. If one holds down the shift key when clicking the OK button it is supposed to open a results page in a new tab.

Tamil Tuesday, March 3, 2009 2:20:35 PM

SHIFT+Click won't work in buttons.

Neikius writes: A friend of mine doesn't wanna swap that memory hog of a firefox becouse he uses a specially customized toolbar with bookmarks in folders. Then he middle-clicks the entries to open in new tab. Now in opera, this can only be done (as far as I know) by disabling the tab reuse feature you mentioned and left clicking. But its not the same... no matter what I do, I cannot change anything for toolbars. Those are so inflexible. Or if there were just some way to load bookmark sidebar on top...

Johan writes: Oh well... Not being able to middle click bookmark links and make them open in another tab is veeery frustrating. It's so intuitive in Firefox doing that. For me using Opera now is like constantly discovering that your shoelaces are tied together when you try to walk. I think it's about fifty-fifty I want to open bookmarks in the same or another tab, so I'd get equally irritated making bookmarks always open in new tabs. Having to use both hands when opening a bookmark is not very convenient. And it's simply strange not having a right click/menu option on bookmarks. This should be a really small thing to fix for Opera. There is an existing setting for what middle clicking on links should do, but for some reason it doesn't work on bookmark links? (My what a deja-vu feeling I got now... maybe I've written something similar some years ago?) Anyway, many thanks for your Opera tips'n'tricks and support Tamil, it's very appreciated!

Apparently Opera wont let you change any of the "CLICK" options. Which seems completely backwards to have to use AutoHotkey for something so basic.

I wanted to make it so clicking on a item in bookmarks does nothing (aside from selecting it), and CTRL+Click opens in a NewTab and Shift+Click opens in a background Tab. But gee not possible. Ugh.

The only way to even select multiple items in the bookmark panel is to 'right click' on one, then Shift+right click on another... else all of the bookmarks you just selected will open. This is extremely unintuitive.

If you use AutoHotKey, with a mouse that has extra buttons (that you can define as CTRL and SHIFT) heres
one that works for:
CTRL +Click = Open New Tab in Foreground
SHIFT+Click = Open New Tab in Background
#ifWinActive, ahk_class OpWindow
{
	~LButton::
	{
		if GetKeyState("Shift") == 1
		{
			Send, ^{LButton}
		}
		else
		if GetKeyState("Ctrl") == 1
		{
			Send, {Ctrl Up}+{LButton}{Ctrl DownTemp}
		}
	}
	return
; Heres Where you would insert the 2 lines below
; If you wanted to use Keyboard Ctrl/Shift.
}
return

Unfortunately (code) blocks above are removing Tabs, its really not formatted that badly over here.

If you want to use the keyboard, add these:
	$+LButton:: Send, +^{LButton}
	$^LButton:: Send, {Ctrl Up}+{LButton}{Ctrl DownTemp}
If you only want to use a keyboard for the Shift/Ctrl Keys, then remove the "~LButton::" block.

I re-defined dictionary from right click menu to use google translate engine and i used this line:
Item, MI_IDM_SELDICTIONARY=Go to page, "javascript:var t=((window.getSelection&&window.getSelection())||(document.getSelection&&document.getSelection())||(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange&&document.selection.createRange().text));var e=(document.charset||document.characterSet);if(t!=''){location.href='http://translate.google.com/translate_t?text='+t+'&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie='+e;}else{location.href='http://translate.google.com/translate?u='+escape(location.href)+'&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie='+e;};"

But i alway get the translation in the same page even i disabled "Reuse current tab".
is there some alternative to the link above or something to modify.
I tried to use this line instead the above one:
Item, MI_IDM_SELDICTIONARY=Go to page, "http://translate.google.com/translate_t?text=%t&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie=utf-8"

This one work for opening translation in new tab but it doesn't support chinese and japanese text.
Can you help with this?

It's almost enough to drive me away from Opera altogether, this inability to right-click bookmarks. Makes me nuts having to go to "Manage Bookmarks," navigate to the one in question, right click it, click "Properties," then edit from there -- just to tweak the display name or what have you. Is there something stopping the Opera development team from incorporating this really simple functionality? I mean, do these people not use bookmarks on a regular basis or something, and thus not realize how immensely annoying it is?

How to use Quote function:

  1. Select some text
  2. Click on the Quote link
