How Important Is Family Today?

Family can mean different things to different people. But my question is, how important is family today?
Perhaps more important than ever when it comes to raising children. Social instability roots deeply in early family life I think, although not everyone with an unhappy childhood will end up a convict. We all know that children idolize their parents. Thus as parents we are supposed to teach children right and wrong and in ideal world a child would have both counterparts to look up to, mother and father.
I think too much emphasis is placed on marriage though. A couple in a long term relationship with kids is just as much a family as a married couple, in my opinion.
Family life is important for a healthy development, security and stability, however, how likely is it in our modern society to have that perfect family unit with both parents being able to raise the kids?
