I'm writing to call your attention to a serious incident that may even trigger war in Vietnam.
On May 26, three Chinese maritime surveillance ships blocked and damaged exploration cables of a Vietnamese oil exploration ship just 120 nautical miles east of the beautiful Nha Trang city.
This incident did NOT take place in the disputed territorial waters. This incident took place completely INSIDE Vietnam's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal states have sovereign rights in a 200-nautical mile EEZ with respect to natural resources and certain economic activities, and exercise jurisdiction over marine science research and environmental protection.
China is a signatory of this Convention. For the past several months, Chinese fishing boats, assisted by armed Chinese Navy ships - disguised as "surveillance" and "fishing regulator" forces - have swarmed the South China Sea, blocking normal and perfectly legal fishing activities of Vietnamese civilian boats. Chinese navy ships often intercepted Vietnamese fishermen, confiscated their boats and demanded ransom. Chinese forces in the Paracels have refused shelter for Vietnamese fishermen during tropical storms. In the last few weeks, Chinese navy has even opened fire at Vietnamese fishermen within Vietnam's EEZ.
That is the current situation. China will use its vast resources to launch a campaign to paint a different picture. Don't let them fool you.
For thousands of years, China has always wanted to invade Vietnam, to assimilate us. Time and time again, they have failed. Vietnamese are not war-mongers. The first noteworthy structure that King Ly built after 1,000 years of war with China in 1075 is the Temple of LITERATURE in Hanoi. But if China comes again, we will fight and defeat them again. Lạm kể chút xíu về chuyện cây chuối tí xíu. Hồi học cấp 3 có đi học thêm môn sinh, cô giáo dạy thêm lúc dạy về phần đa bội có khoe nhà cô có 1 cây chuối rất lạ, nó to lớn hơn mấy cây chuối mốc hay chuối hương bình thường, xanh mướt, quả lại có hạt, hạt gieo sẽ lên cây mới nên chắc nó là cây chuối đa bội chẵn.

Địa y có lẽ vẫn còn là một từ hơi lạ lạ với nhiều người. Ở Việt Nam hiện nay chưa có nhiều nhà khoa học nghiên cứu về đối tượng này. Từ khi tìm hiểu về địa y đến nay, tôi chỉ thấy khá ít tài liệu về địa y của Việt Nam, tuy nhiên hầu hết được công bố bởi những nhà nghiên cứu địa y của các nước khác, khi có điều kiện họ đã đến Việt Nam trong một thời gian ngắn thu một số ít mẫu và mang về nước phân loại rồi công bố. Do bản thân chưa có điều kiện nghiên cứu nhiều và mới chỉ bước đầu tìm hiểu về địa y trên lá (foliicolous lichens) nhưng tôi thấy có khá nhiều điều thú vị còn chờ được khám phá. Dường như hiện nay không có nhiều sinh viên muốn học chuyên sâu về ngành phân loại nói chung ở nước ta vì một phần do số lượng ít ỏi của các nhà phân loại học, hoặc theo ý kiến của nhiều sinh viên là môn phân loại ... khó, nhiều khi phải ... "trèo đèo lội suối" và cơ hội xin việc không cao, ở Việt Nam hiện nay cũng có ít nơi có điều kiện hỗ trợ cho ngành học này nên các bạn ưu tiên chọn những ngành học mang tính ứng dụng nhiều hơn. Tuy chỉ có thời gian ngắn tiếp xúc với phân loại thực vật và phân loại địa y, nhưng dù sao tôi cũng hy vọng sẽ có những bạn thực sự đam mê với ngành phân loại học để kế tục những nhà phân loại trong nước hiện nay cũng như có điều kiện khám phá những điều kỳ thú trong hệ động thực vật của nước nhà.
