Beam Me Up Scotty!

a record of daily happenings in my sometimes bizarre life.....

I hate chain mail !!

, ,

I hated it when it used to come through the regular post - you remember those horrible letters that you were supposed to copy and send to 20 people or else dire and terrible things would happen to you?? - and I hate it even MORE when I find it in my mail box!

At least with letters you had the satisfaction of tearing them up into little bits and then throwing them into the dustbin - now all you get to do is press that delete button. Not nearly as satisfying!mad

Why do people feel this almost frantic desire to send you these things? Do they REALLY believe that something awful (or at least more awful than normal awful!) is going to happen to them if they don't pass them on?

No idea - just stop sending them to ME! no

Sunday's ARE for sleeping!A little bit of Zambia

Oh do I know what you mean. I just dumped 359 spams that were only since 16 hours ago.

I found a way to get the satisfactin you are missing.

1. Print out the spams
2. On each day of the year tear up 1
3. Failing the above 2 go to my forum "Just released Applications - Hi'ly Unlikely v1.0" and buy the last program.

Here is the link http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=214588

HAH! What about that chain mail that I received from you last week with where it gave me an exact time that I would receive something if I passed it on to at least 7 people...? smile

ROFL!

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 11:27:05 AM

But dahling....that was an ANGEL! And it only promised good things if you passed it on - not death and destruction if you didn't?

AND - the very next morning, at the specified time (ish), I received an email from those daft horsey people with a PROBLEM! Just think of the fun I had replying to that? It was worth it! lol

Crystal DawnCrystalDawn Tuesday, December 4, 2007 11:39:00 AM

LOL...Good morning!

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 3:11:55 PM

Into the afternoon now - my internet connection has been very shaky since yesterday - in fact almost non-existent! Are you having problems accessing your blog page too?

DeeDeeTogaOga Tuesday, December 4, 2007 6:33:57 PM

chain mail irked lol i just erase them. i like the prayer ones though. but i never do pass them on.

Valiusvalius324 Tuesday, December 4, 2007 8:57:02 PM

Well girls,

If you don't mind me interrupting on my own blog:) I had no problems with my connection yesterday. When I have problems I just reboot. I love it that you can close uour browser, reboot and open the broser again with the last session saved like you never left.

I have to come up with a program that allows you to crash your computer on a schedule and not be able to get back to anything. (Not to rack your brains) it's all part of my forum "Hi'ly Unlikely"

bye I'm going to crash my other computer.

Valiusvalius324 Tuesday, December 4, 2007 8:59:51 PM

My apologies...How'd I get here??????????

I thought I was on my own page...How'd you do that?

What's a blog anyway?

I think it's mirrors.

So sorry again and hope you don't mind me backing out of here while covering my head.

DeeDeeTogaOga Tuesday, December 4, 2007 9:05:17 PM

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 9:37:54 PM

Crystal DawnCrystalDawn Tuesday, December 4, 2007 9:48:58 PM

Hello there! I've gotten into your blog. Have you gotten into your blog?

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 9:59:05 PM

Thanks for the link Valius - it got me into my profile but when I pressed that stupid little blog button back to this message:

The Opera Community is currently experiencing technical difficulties. We apologize for the downtime and aim to be up and running again as soon as possible.

Until then, we suggest visiting Opera.com.

- The My Opera team.

Wouldn't mind so much but it's been doing this for the last 15 hours or so!
I DON'T WANT TO VISIT OPERA.COM ANYMORE!

Hey there CD smile

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:00:00 PM

In fact I think I'm beginning to HATE Opera.com - lol

DeeDeeTogaOga Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:07:37 PM

uh-oh...sounds like trouble.

theoddbod Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:10:41 PM

Maybe you could tweak your settings so that the Delete button made a little 'rip-rip' noise, or a small scream p

DeeDeeTogaOga Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:17:12 PM

i wan good with computers, so i'm useless.

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:20:42 PM

Must admit I'm beginning to feel pretty useless too Toga!

Love the 'rip rip' idea oddbod - I shall ask my techno wizard son when I can raise him on chat - lol

Valiusvalius324 Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:37:10 PM

Back in 2000 I happened to see a news brief on the indigenous Maori people of Aotearoa New Zealand. I remember it because I was engaged to a woman from New Zealand (Land of the Long white Cloud!) at the time.

It seems as though the last Pure race of the planet had died. It might have been the last pure Maori but a tragic loss in any case. I remember her as being 111 years old. It may have only been a 30 second news story but it made a lasting impression on me.

http://www.maori.org.nz/korero/?d=page&pid=sp37&parent=36 (kaitiaki creation story)

I think it's sad when ever extinctions take place. I am going to start a memorial fund on my Blog in case The Great Alien can not find her way home. Lost in the wilderness of cyberland, cold, wet and hungry she is fighting with the strength of Hurcules to rejoin us.

Come home soon The Great Alien, we are all hungry and you forgot to make dinner!

OH! Welcome BacK!

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:45:36 PM

Thank you Valius for your concern - it is pretty cold and miserable here on the outside! Bit like pressing your nose against the window on the outside while everyone else is having a party inside!

sigh!

DeeDeeTogaOga Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:58:27 PM

now that's just sad cry

JayneThe Great Alien Tuesday, December 4, 2007 11:01:12 PM

ROFL - isn't it just!

Crystal DawnCrystalDawn Tuesday, December 4, 2007 11:06:34 PM

Um, you can't get into your page because you're an ALIEN!

Jeeeesh! I have to tell you everything?

DeeDeeTogaOga Wednesday, December 5, 2007 12:24:40 AM

DeeDeeTogaOga Saturday, December 8, 2007 1:15:34 AM

is everything better now?

Valiusvalius324 Monday, December 10, 2007 12:26:10 PM

Chain Mail? I haven't seen chain mail since the last time I visited the Smithsonian. Didn't they pass a law back about 100 years ago against chain mail?

End of conversation...else someone's age might go detected.

JayneThe Great Alien Wednesday, December 12, 2007 4:24:53 PM

LOL - very good Valius!

and NO TogaOga - I am still getting that same stupid message when I try and access my page! Despite the email to Admin, being away for a week and asking for help on the forums! In fact, I am very disappointed with the lack of response I've had from Opera to my problem to be honest sad

Valiusvalius324 Wednesday, December 12, 2007 4:34:43 PM

Did you try using a different browser? I use many browsers because sometimes one might act up. I would recommend trying "Advsnced Browser" and "Slim Browser" My favorite is "Neoplanet" because I've used it for so long.

This might not be the answer but ...nothing to lose.

DeeDeeTogaOga Wednesday, December 12, 2007 5:04:59 PM

I am sorry to hear about your page. you might need a new account...um, what valius said

JayneThe Great Alien Wednesday, December 12, 2007 7:03:21 PM

if I open a new account can I still save all the stuff I've already done and use the same user name tho?

Tis very sad sad

DeeDeeTogaOga Wednesday, December 12, 2007 7:05:00 PM

um, no? I'll ask.

DeeDeeTogaOga Thursday, December 13, 2007 2:28:18 AM

still looking

Valiusvalius324 Thursday, December 13, 2007 2:29:31 AM

Today is one of the saddest days of my life. A day that will live on in the annals of virtuality. We are on the verge of losing one of our own, but I have climbed the mountain and from the summit I haved peered down and saw. I have seen the sririts of JFK, MLK, ED (Emily Dickinson) and others. I say to you let us not add TGA (TheGreatAlien) without a fight.

Sure you may clone TGA and it mat look like her. It may sound like her and we might love her clone as we have loved TGA, but it will never be the same.

I remember back in 71 when I came home with my "Tandy Model 1". I didn't go to work for three days. My wife only saw the back of my head for three days as she brought me coffee both day and night. On the third day with impeccable timing she entered the room with my coffee just in time to see me jump up and shout, "I've finally found someone who understands me". (words I came to regret) I had created my first computer graphic. I had to create it by programming each pixel on the screen to replicate an American flay with tiny stick figures at the bottom that jumped up and down. Exhausted and weary I went to bed for the first time in three days.

When I awoke I ran to my computer only to see a blank screen. I called my wife and asked if she had turned it off. That's when I found out that we had a 30 min. power outage while I slept leaving my computer defenseless. She on seeing my sadness asked, "can't you do it again". I answered in all honesty, "Yes" but it would never be the first, it would only look like the first. I don't think she ever understood.

You see TGA, we are in a battle, a real fight. There are forces that we can not see that seek to shake our very faith. TGA, close your eyes and dream with me...do you see what I see. Look there in the middle of your imagination...can you see him...do you see him...standing in his flawless tuxedo with his white bow tie...yes it is Michael Buffer with a microphone at his lips. Keep your eyes closed and let's listen.

"Ladies and gentlemen...Let's G e t R e a d y t o R U M B L E. In the red corner wearing red shorts with the red stripe, having fought one hell of a fight his last time out...The Great Impostor, Lucifer...and in the Blue corner wearing the all white trunks, having only been to the canvas once by virtue of a right cross, he is undefeated, he arose to remain the champion of champion...I give you GOD".

TGA, did you feel it? Are you prepared to give up the battle so soon? There is in fact a real battle going on. I am in your corner and at your call to save your avatar and true persona. It's like that last lug...you remove 4 lugs to change the tire and the last one snaps off. It's like that last tooth pick on your creation, then down it falls. There are indeed forces that toy with our minds. Please do not throw in the towel just yet...in the world of cyberland all is not lost. It would truly sadden my heart. I stand ready to petition the "Opera Stars" on your behalf if needed. I am ready to download your entire existance to be able to email it to you if needed. Somewhere looking from the summit of that mountain I see a place for you but it is not yet the time.

To all forgive me for taking up so much space but I really feel this deep to my bones.

theoddbod Thursday, December 13, 2007 9:58:21 AM

They can't reregister you under the same name, and it wouldn't make any difference anyway. Whatever the problem is, it's not a fault with Opera.
Who's your ISP? Are there any other users with the same ISP that can see your page?
Which version of Linux are you using?

Valiusvalius324 Thursday, December 13, 2007 10:37:22 AM

OK one thing at a time...My ISP is Verizon DSL @768k baud
I also have Netzero on a 56k modem but seldom use it.

Other users? I would have no idea. Is there a problem reading my screens? Your question brings up the natural response of why would someone ask that.

I do not use Linux on this machine but on another I use RedHat do not have vN.N available just now. I have XP and 98 (Chicago) on this machine but prefer and use 98.

Now for the real task at hand...helping TGA. Yes I am more than aware that her problem is local. Without having access to her computer it is difficult to speculate. If I did have to guess I would bank on a memory recovery problem. Then secondly I would suspect a glitch has developed in one of her installations.

You sound like you might be knowledgeable so If you have any ideas, now is the time.

Appreciate your contact and would appreciate even more a reply to the gist of this response.

theoddbod Thursday, December 13, 2007 4:20:43 PM

My questions were directed at TGA, not yourself. Something somewhere has cached her main blog page while My Opera was down and seems unwilling to show a newer version of the page. It's likely that all her web traffic goes via her ISP's proxy (mine used to, and it's a common default), so perhaps that proxy server is returning the error page every time. I can't remember if her problem affects all browsers - she's only mentioned Firefox that i recall.
But i don't know Linux, and i'm not a network guy sad

Valiusvalius324 Thursday, December 13, 2007 6:00:13 PM

OH! sorry - I think you might be on the right track. As a matter of fact I run about 12 different browsers depending on my mood. I was going to suggest Firefox v2.0 only because whenever I've had problems with others, Firefox has remeained stable. I guess that blows that theory. Right now my "Opera" browser is also returning garbage. But I don't necessarily need it. Perhaps I shoud fix it to gain some insight to her problem. It (opera) has a repair mood when re-installing.

I've wanted to make some suggestions to her about re-installing but I don't know her expertise and was afraid to have her mess up.

I sommetimes just wipe out and reformat my drives but then again I keep a backup of everything on CDs.

I sure hope one of us can help her. Maybe she can try different browsers. Just to see if the problem is "exactly" the same.

Thanks
valius324

JayneThe Great Alien Saturday, December 15, 2007 3:28:49 PM

What a lovely surprise! Sorry I've been away for a few days and between that and the packing for the GREAT MOVE OVER THE OCEAN, I'm afraid I just haven't had time to fiddle with the internet much smile

I am happy to agree that my ISP may well be at fault - this would be a fairly normal assumption and I am used to doing battle with them. Unfortunately I am not at all computer literate and, stuck in Zambia as I am at the moment, I have decided to put this battle on hold until January when the first born Minor Alien son can sort it all out - probably in just a few minutes?

Since I can still access everything else I will soldier on, laptop in hand and a brave smile on my face! Thank you all so much for being so concerned and trying to help - I really do appreciate it in the midst of my stress and grumpiness smile

Thank you!

theoddbod Saturday, December 15, 2007 7:50:54 PM

You're welcome smile

And I am enjoying all the new stuff that happened while I was shifting continents - it was a pleasant surprise. Thanks to all for trying to help me with this problem which, I am thankful to inform you, is no longer a problem.

Long live my Blog!

Valiusvalius324 Friday, January 18, 2008 5:13:04 PM

Me confused...you Jayne! Welcome back to tassel and hassle or is it hustle and bustle. Anyway welcome back to all problems solved and rain!

Valiusvalius324 Friday, January 18, 2008 5:15:25 PM

PS

Would you like some chain mail to make you feel at home?

JayneThe Great Alien Friday, January 18, 2008 6:21:57 PM

Hey there Valius - much as I appreciate you efforts to make me feel welcome, I think I shall pass on your very generous offer bigsmile

You confused? Never! no What hope is there for the rest of us?
