HP today announced the expansion of its virtualized browsing solution across select business desktop products and its plans to introduce Linux as an operating system choice for business desktop customers. The offerings are designed to help small businesses enhance their productivity and ease their management of technology. The first-of-its-kind Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solution was developed with Symantec and Mozilla for HP customers. The solution uses the standard release of Mozilla Firefox with a Symantec Software Virtualization Solution layer that allows customers to use the Internet productively while keeping business PCs stable and easier to support. As customers surf the web, changes made to the PC are contained in a "virtual layer," separate from the operating system, and do not permanently alter the machine. Customers can therefore reset the browser as needed, instantly returning the PC to its last-known good state.
Previously offered on the HP Compaq dc7900 Business Desktop PC, this virtual protection tool will soon be extended to work with HP Compaq dc7500, HP Compaq dc5800, HP Compaq dc5850, HP Compaq dx2400, HP Compaq dx2450 and HP Compaq dx2390 desktop PCs. "As companies continue to rely on the Internet as a primary business tool, the need for systems that are more stable and resistant to the effects of interacting on the web has become a top concern," said Alan Reed, vice president and general manager, Business Desktops, HP. "With HP's virtual browsing solution, small business customers are equipped with an easy-to-use solution to efficiently manage their PCs, ultimately saving time and costs."
"We're pleased that more people will be able to experience the exceptional features offered in Firefox," said Margaret Tallman, Business Development, Mozilla. "With Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions, HP business customers will receive all the same key security attributes offered within Mozilla Firefox's standard version, including instant website ID, password manager, anti-malware, anti-phishing, one-click private data clearing, pop-up blocker."
Ken Berryman, vice president, Endpoint Virtualization, Symantec, said: "This solution is a key milestone as application virtualization is now mainstream technology that makes PCs more efficient, stable and capable of meeting today's changing business demands. Delivering application software virtually allows businesses to provide a more productive and less expensive computing experience." HP expands choice for business and education customers with Linux offering To provide customers with more cost-effective and secure computing options, HP, the leader in worldwide Linux server shipments and revenue, has introduced a new desktop offering with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop from Novell on the HP Compaq dc5850.
This joint solution delivers a tightly integrated suite of essential applications, including OpenOffice.org, web browser, multimedia tools, and email, collaboration and instant messaging software to drive productivity for business customers.
For education customers, HP is working with Novell to develop and maintain a repository of more than 40 applications, including math, art and word games, to improve student learning. In addition, applications for school administration and instruction will be available for teachers and administrators. "We are excited to expand our work with HP to take advantage of the high-growth desktop Linux space," said Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager, Open Platform Solutions, Novell. "As the best-engineered and most interoperable Linux desktop, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop helps customers increase security and improve productivity. With the focus on educational users, this affordable joint offering delivers a solid learning platform and prepares students with 21st-century technology skills."
Pricing and availability
The Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solution is planned to be available worldwide by end of year at no additional cost on the new business desktop models referenced above, with the HP Compaq dx2390 available outside the United States.
The HP Compaq dc5850 with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is expected to be available Dec. 15 in North America at a U.S. street price of $519.(1)

Prepare for next-generation browsing! Opera Software introduces the first look at Opera 10. An alpha version of Opera 10 is now available at http://www.opera.com/browser/next/.
This release gives people a taste of Opera’s new rendering engine, Opera Presto 2.2 — the foundation of all future Opera 10 products. Opera Presto 2.2 offers approximately a 30-percent-faster browsing experience as compared to Opera Presto 2.1, introduced in Opera 9.5 in June 2008.
Opera has fine-tuned its standards support and, as a result, Opera 10 alpha achieves an Acid3 100/100 Test score. This version also provides Web developers with a whole range of new technologies for building better Web sites.
Other new features in Opera 10 alpha include spell-checking as you type, as well as auto-updating to the latest versions as they become available. Opera Mail also has added support for HTML formatting of e-mails.
“My favorite development in this release is the support for new Web technologies, which allows people to explore new ways of using the Internet,” says Johan Borg, Vice President of Consumer Engineering, Opera Software. “Our 100/100 Acid3 Test score is only a first indication of the impact these new Web technologies will have. We look forward to your feedback on Opera 10.”

The first beta release of Moonlight 1.0, an open source implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight framework, is now available for download from the project's official web site: http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/. This release is the first step towards bringing robust Silverlight compatibility to the Linux desktop.(Microsoft Silverlight is a programmable web browser plugin that enables features such as animation, vector graphics and audio-video playback that characterize rich Internet applications. Version 2.0, released October 2008, brings additional interactivity features and support for .NET languages and development tools. It is compatible with multiple web browser products used on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.)
Development on Moonlight began last year after Microsoft demonstrated Silverlight at MIX 07. Lead Mono developer Miguel de Icaza and his team produced a working Moonlight prototype after an intense 20-day hackathon during which the enthusiastic participants produced thousands of lines of code. When Silverlight 1.0 was officially released in September, Microsoft announced plans to collaborate with Novell's Moonlight developers in order to ensure full Silverlight support on the Linux platform. Microsoft supplied test suites and also agreed to make binary audio and video codecs available for the Linux plugin.
Moonlight 1.0 is implemented in C++ and is distributed as a self-contained Firefox plugin. It leverages the browser's own JavaScript interpreter to support the scripting capabilities of Silverlight 1.0. The plugin itself is entirely open source and is licensed under the GNU LGPLv2. It is currently only available for x86 and x86-64 architectures, but support could potentially be added for additional architectures in the future.
Twenty-four hours after teasing us with news of a major product announcement, Nokia officially took the wraps off its mystery smartphone on Tuesday at the Nokia World 2008 conference in Barcelona, Spain. And despite some close guesses, no one got it quite right, so without further ado, let us introduce you to the Nokia N97. The N97 is expected to ship in Europe during the first half of 2009, with an estimated price of 550 euros ($695). As Crave reader UKStory1355 humorously and astutely noted in our blog post yesterday, "Like it matters to U.S. citizens; we won't see it for 18 months, anyway," there is no official word on when we'll see the N97 stateside. Heck, we're still waiting for the Nokia N96.
Part of the company's high-end N series of multimedia computers, the N97 trumps all previous models with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and a tilting 3.5-inch touch screen (anyone else reminded of the AT&T Tilt or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1?). Yes, there's the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, but the N97 includes phone capabilities and is designed for the "needs of Internet-savvy consumers."
For example, the smartphone provides easy access to a number of social-networking sites, and the Web browser supports streaming Flash videos. The N97 also introduces something Nokia calls "social location," which uses the capabilities of the integrated A-GPS sensors and electronic compass to automatically update users' social networks, or let them share their location via photos or videos with friends.
The Home screen can be personalized with widgets of favorite Web and social-networking sites. Finally, the N97 is fully compatible with Nokia's Ovi Internet services, which include the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and the N-Gage gaming platform--though these services have yet to fully launch in the United States.
The Symbian-based smartphone also features a music and video player, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and a whopping 32GB of onboard memory that can be expanded with a 16GB microSD card.
The quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone is HSDPA-capable handset, but it currently supports only the 900/1900/2100MHz bands (AT&T's 3G network runs on 850/1900MHz, while T-Mobile runs on 1700/2100MHz). There is integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, however.
Obviously, the Nokia N97 takes a jab at other popular touch-screen smartphones, namely the Apple iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, and Research In Motion BlackBerry Storm, but will it succeed? It certainly has the substance and style to take on the big boys, but will it go the way of the Xperia X1, in which the lack of a U.S. carrier and a high price tag will severely limit its adoption in the States?
Either way, we think that the Nokia N97 looks like a pretty sweet device, and we're looking forward to having some personal hands-on time with it. Above is a Nokia-produced video of the N97. I'd love to hear your initial thoughts.
After just over six months of development time and following delays caused by the server infrastructure break-in, the Fedora project has now released version 10 of the Fedora Linux distribution, codenamed "Cambridge". Thanks to kernel-based mode-setting and the new Plymouth graphical-bootup program, the new distribution promises to deliver not only a faster, but also a more visually-pleasing startup sequence. The distribution offers a comprehensive, state-of-the-art software range including GNOME 2.24.1, KDE 4.1.2, OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox 3.0.4, Linux 2.6.27.5, X.org X Server 1.5.3, Glibc 2.9, and RPM 4.6. Incorporating features like the "glitch-free" version of PulseAudio, the new Sectool security audit and intrusion detection tool, the series 0.3 PackageKit framework, extended printer configuration software and a version of NetworkManager that supports ad hoc networks and connection sharing, Fedora 10 offers numerous additional new features that will probably also be incorporated by other distributors in the near future.
While Fedora 10 is unleashed on users this week, the developers are already busily working on Fedora 11, which will not arrive in late April/early May like the usual spring releases. This time, it will take about a month longer, according to a schedule proposal that has now been accepted. The delay is to allow developers a little more time to complete the distribution whose components, according to the proposal, are to become the basis for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. The Fedora project has already scheduled some features for integration into Fedora 11; they include the switch to the Hal successor DeviceKit, DeltaRPMs with Presto, multiseat support, a cross-compiler for Windows and simplified volume control.

Two Cloud hosted Virtual Machine implementations are available from Layered Tech:
Virtualization creates profound cost savings for the Windows OS environment for several reasons, including that customers:
* No longer have to buy and maintain hardware including servers, load balancers and SANs; * Save money because virtualization enables them to reduce the complexity of their operating environment by consolidating multiple physical servers onto a handful of virtual machines; * Save time when setting up new servers because virtualization software’s templating and snapshot capabilities can replicate entire OS and application set-ups in 10 percent of the time it takes with physical dedicated servers; * Eliminate the cost and complexity of maintaining and installing their OS because The Grid Layer® solution from Layered Tech means that management of virtual machines is handled by Layered Tech data center employees.
“In the current economic conditions where everyone is looking to spend less but still achieve their business objectives and profitability, Layered Tech is presenting customers with a particularly compelling opportunity to significantly cut costs by consolidating their Windows OS server operations onto our virtualization platform,” said Jack Finlayson, CEO of Layered Tech. “By bringing Windows OS onto The Grid Layer, we are literally creating a market that didn’t have a place before. To achieve virtualization’s high-availability, scalability and replication in a physical server environment would cost customers millions, yet with Layered Tech their cost is a tiny fraction of that.”

Paste the following text inside to start Eclipse with optimized memory settings: download/path/eclipse/eclipse -clean -configuration download/path/eclipse -vm /path/to/jdk/jdk1.6.0_02/jre/bin/java -vmargs -XX:MaxPermSize=350m -Xms128m -Xmx350m
XX:MaxPermSize and Xmx can be adjusted upwards depending on the amount of memory available on your system. Making -Xms too high seems to make eclipse grow the heap size too high too fast.
2.) Install Eclipse xulbooster plugin; please follow instructions on the link below:
You should now have colour coded editors for .xul, .rdf, .js, .dtd and .properties files.
Previews on localized xul documents will not work by default. To enable localized xul document previews using xulbooster, use the trick below:
$cd /etc/gre.d
Open the conf file with the highest version as this is most likely the xulrunner instance the xulbooster plugin is most probably using:
$vi 1.9.0.3.system.conf
4.) Navigate to the location of the xulrunner libs (GRE_PATH) indicated in the gre conf file:
$cd /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.3 $cd chrome
Find out the exact path of the .dtd files the xul document you want to preview on Eclipse is using for localization. Create a symbolic link to this path inside the chrome folder:
$ln -s /path/to/my/chrome/locale myextension
‘myextension’ can be any name. In our example, myextension will contain the chrome folder within it. The chrome folder will in turn contain the content and locale folders.
5.) Depending on the locale your firefox browser is using, open the corresponding .manifest file. In our case, since we’re using the en-US locale, we open the en-US.manifest file:
$vi en-US.manifest
Append the following line (depending on the name of your symbolink link above and the folder structure within your extension):
The .dtd files (myextension locale files) are now available to the xul instance and by extension the xulbooster plugin. It should now be possible to preview localized xul documents without having to restart firefox. This should hopefully significantly improve one’s speed of xul GUI interface development.
6.) Automatically update your extension by running a script:
