Ranting in the dark

A truly awesome view on human stupidity

Party people

, , ,

Inspired by The Characters of Theophrastus, an ageless book about the social (mis)behavior of people, I'm trying to put here my own thoughts and observations on the different types of people that would gather in a social event. It can be just a chat, dinner or an entertainment gethering, generally described as "party". Even in this limited scope, I believe there's a lot of Characters to be described and you'll easily recognise one of your friends in them. Unlike the Characters of Theophrastus, there will be positive descriptions as well. It's easy and convenient to focus on the negative ones, I hope I'll be able to have enough good descriptions to compensate.

The Leech

The Leech is an interesting creature. They're young, pretty and charming. When they party, they party hard and are in general fun and nice people. The peculiar thing about the leach is not how but when they do it.

Leeches don't organize events. They're quiet people and prefer to have a quiet evening at home than go out in the bars. This is why you rarely see the leaches out. They're very circumstantial creatures - everything must be just right in order for the leach to have fun. They need the perfect environment, the perfect company, the perfect music, you name it. The thing is - leaches don't really know how to have fun and they suck the fun out of the surroundings. If not provided with all the factors needed, or if some of the factors are taken away, the leaches will pout and eventually go home.

The Leech is good company, if you manage to put them in the right environment. They're not malicious nor grumpy, but they require a lot of upkeep to get the party going. They'll never admit to this directly, but if questioned slowly and carefully, they'll end up describing the perfect party conditions for them, revealing the importance they place on external factors.

The Tinder

Tinder are people who, unlike many others have close to unlimited potential for positive emotions. Some Tinders seem to almost literally live for having fun. The important thing about them is that it takes just a small bit of positive emotion, a sparkle, to create a blazing fire that engulfs the Tinder and everything around them.

Tinders like to have fun, they like to see people smiling and energetic. Tinders are the people who would look for someone gloomy or tired and go there to get them going. You'll often see such person glow for hours because someone smiled at them. The Tinder can power themselves up from hearing a happy tune, from having a laugh, from meeting someone new, anything and everything. They almost never say no to any different ideas and get themselves into all kinds of peculiar situations.

The Tinder will catch fire quickly and will burn bright and strong. Even if one doesn't directly notice them, Tinders radiate extreme amounts of energy and can keep great amounts of people partying for the whole night.

The Tinder never seems to sleep and people say they'll burn themselves down and age prematurely. Contrary to this, the Tinder never seems to have any problems.

The Grumpy One

Grumpy are the people that appear to permanently be in a bad mood, even if they tell you they've had the time of their lives the next day. Grumpy people are often seen sitting alone and usually don't move around much. They'll never be the ones to cause problems or spoil the mood for people but it's close to impossible to make a Grumpy one enjoy the fun as the rest of the people do.

Grumpy people can be hard to get out. They've got a lot of things to do and many different ideas to take care of. They're not anti-social but they are often preoccupied with their own affairs. Such person can refuse your offers to do something a number of times and then complain that you didn't invite them to something, when you finally give up.

The Grumpy one sits alone in the kitchen and has their own drink. They disapprove of the people in there that mix drinks and refuse to participate in any alcohol experiments. A Grumpy one will talk to you and be usually friendly, but will rather talk about something completely different than the people around him are discussing.

Grumpies in general are people that pay more intention to themselves and their own thoughts and interests. They quickly lose interest and go away if there isn't anyone around to pay them attention.

The Socially Outdated

Being socially outdated can be described as not being able to understand the changes in society around you and stubbornly and persistently acting in a way that confuses people and makes them feel uneasy.

A socially outdated person will go to a party and put on music that everyone has long forgotten. He'll laugh about it and go on saying jokes that aren't funny to anyone else. This person will confuse others with his behavior but will fail to realize he's being mocked. He'll dance in a funny way and clear the dance-floor around him. The socially outdated will drink something that is strange for everyone. If he's a male, he's capable of entering a bar and ordering a cocktail meant for girls, even as the first drink.

The Socially Outdated one seems to try really hard to be the center of attention but with everything he does he seems to alienate himself even more. His jokes are not funny, he dresses poorly, discusses things no-one else wishes to talk about and in general makes everyone around him feel uneasy.

The Funny Man

The funny man is easily the heart and the soul of a company. He seems to be everywhere and never stops laughing. The funny man is the person that everyone remembers easily. He seems to fit in all kinds of gatherings without any problem.

It's easy to recognize the funny man - he's ready and able to talk about anything, at any time. Willing to participate in any topic, he instantly behaves like he's been an expert in that field for ages. He's never off guard and will continue the discussion, even if he's clueless. Most of the comical characteristics of the funny man are directly related to this willingness to take on any topic he's been presented.

The funny man is absent-minded and over-enthusiastic. He's ready to praise the most insignificant things for hours and he'll jump into all kind of messy situations without a second thought.

The Photographer

This breed will carry a camera everywhere and will be exclusively preoccupied with taking pictures. For the Photographer nothing is real unless it's documented. The existence of such individual is governed by the taking of pictures and the process of sharing them with everyone and no-one in practicular.

A novice Photographer will take an astonishing amount of pictures per hour to the point where the people around him will start getting annoyed. The quality of the said photos won't be any good, which the Photographer will try to compensate by increasing the number of pictures taken to truly amazing values.

This type of person will often miss out on everything, while trying to capture it with camera. His attention is split and often he loses focus and runs out of a dance or conversation.

The Elusive Twilight

The Elusive Twilight is a mysterious woman. Usually almost no-one knows where she came from, who exactly brought her or what her name is. This woman instantly grabs the attention of half of the people on the party. She's a flirt but without intention to seduce.

The Elusive Twilight will disappear before anyone can realize it and will leave her presence there a mystery. The intrigued will then discuss her on the next day, trying to figure out her identity. The general consensus is that the Twilight is charming, fun, didn't stay for too long and no-one is sure whether she's single or not.

The Beholder

The Beholder is such a creature, that when introduced into a new setting, it tries to extract as much information out of there as possible. Beholders are the people with genuine childish curiosity. They are able to pay attention to everyone and everything and with true fascination look at the developments troughout the evening. You'll not often spot them straight away, they just blend in so well - at the same time neither dragging immediate attention nor being totally isolated.

Beholders will have ultimate control of the situation around them and remain calm and fairly secure even around the weirdest of happenings. They're a great company for a conversation, although one should be wary not to end up as the subject of the talk, as the Beholder tries to probe them for something curious as well. Nevertheless, they're truly fascinating people, as their attention is dedicated and ultimate, their concern genuine and their expressions - largely positive.

Not only they're very observant, but Beholders also have a great memory. They're a reliable source of information and furthermore insight. It is often you're going to have just as much fun with the Beholder on a night discussing past events as on the nights the said events occured. You'd notice Beholders rarely drink and if they do, it'll be a little. Perhaps it is another source for their awesome memory.
