Well, Here You Are

...but why did you bother?

I'd like to welcome you, but I just don't care

You could only wandered in by accident, so it's not too late to hit the back button before something belittling and hurtful of your beliefs is hurled. On the other hand, if you've smuggled in some holy book, relic, or image of Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins, or wear a necklace of garlic, you could be forcibly ejected if anybody cares enough to do so. I, for one, haven't the energy.

[If you want to, please check back later to see if anybody has joined the group...We don't encourage that sort of thing, but who knows or cares.]
..........................................................................
It might be nice if somebody wrote something about an abyss.

Who cares about abysses? Is that the right plural form anyway? Bah, I don't give a shit.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Tuesday, December 18, 2007 2:17:55 PM

Who cares about abysses? Is that the right plural form anyway? Bah, I don't give a shit.

If I cared, I'd say that this is an appropriate start, but I don't give a shit, either.

Macallan Tuesday, December 18, 2007 2:31:43 PM

Hmm, is there a difference between not giving a shit and not giving a damn? Or are all not-givings equivalent?

Jim BrothertonJaybro Tuesday, December 18, 2007 2:39:41 PM

I can't say I care, but it's the kind of thing we might want to get straight for the good of the group. It could be a selling point.

We could see if we have a quorum.

Macallan Tuesday, December 18, 2007 2:49:17 PM

Yeah, I look forward to using "I don't give a toaster" in conversation right

Jim BrothertonJaybro Tuesday, December 18, 2007 5:44:57 PM

Would the two of you mind passing the toaster?

Garrettthephntm Sunday, December 23, 2007 12:14:12 AM

i dont care when people make fun of me or does anyone give a shit

Macallan Sunday, December 23, 2007 1:55:36 AM

I don't care enough to make fun of you.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Sunday, December 23, 2007 7:56:07 AM

(they both cared enough to check in to see if anybody cared...i came in to make some toast on the window sill)

Jim BrothertonJaybro Sunday, December 23, 2007 7:57:10 AM

The abyss thing is still open.

Macallan Sunday, December 23, 2007 2:07:42 PM

Do you care avout abysses? left

Jim BrothertonJaybro Sunday, December 23, 2007 4:12:10 PM

If somebody wrote something about abysses, I'm sure I could care less.

One thing you need to understand about not caring is that it's more meaningful when the thing you don't care about has substance. For example, it's not enough to not care about atheists or asbestos in general. I can really get into not caring when there is an actual atheist or asbestos in the room. Same thing with loaves and fishes.

Genuine not caring is more an art form than simple ennui.

Macallan Sunday, December 23, 2007 4:23:06 PM

Abyssii are the absence of substance by definition.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Sunday, December 23, 2007 4:54:57 PM

Limited definition, but don't wait for me to point it out, no matter how you spell it.
.................................................
Abyssii, sometimes Abyssians, are dwellers of an Abyss.

Macallan Sunday, December 23, 2007 6:34:27 PM

I thought they were calles 'abyssinians' right

Jim BrothertonJaybro Sunday, December 23, 2007 7:33:01 PM

That's a different kind of Abyssinia. They make good steamed bread, if anybody cares.

Macallan Sunday, December 23, 2007 8:47:43 PM

They make abysmal beer though right

Jim BrothertonJaybro Monday, December 24, 2007 7:44:36 AM

Now there's the start of something on abysssses.

Not that I care, but it looks like the membership is on vacation.

I almost went to a Baptist service yesterday. Talk about abysssses.

Macallan Monday, December 24, 2007 3:25:52 PM

Doesn't that violate the Geneva Conventions? Oh, wait, we're in the US of A, all hail George W. Brezhnev left

Don JacksonOakdaleFTL Thursday, January 10, 2008 10:49:05 AM

If I cared enough, I'd bemoan the wilting away of the meanings of good words... "disinterested," for instance.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Thursday, January 10, 2008 10:56:40 AM

I'd like to care about that...actually, I wouldn't.

Don JacksonOakdaleFTL Thursday, January 10, 2008 11:29:47 AM

Sigh... Perhaps the meaning was a will'o'wisp...

Jim BrothertonJaybro Thursday, January 10, 2008 3:30:24 PM

According to you, but who cares to wonder what you're really thinking. After all, there are two guys in one thread trying to figure out if Australia exists...for certain, that is.

Anybody care?

Macallan Thursday, January 10, 2008 3:46:14 PM

Nobody cares about Australia, not even the australians right

Jim BrothertonJaybro Friday, January 11, 2008 3:38:08 PM

Doesn't that violate the Geneva Conventions?

I went to a convention once...didn't care for it, so you can imagine what I'd think of a convention in Australia, especially if it doesn't exist.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Friday, January 11, 2008 8:33:20 PM

There's an echo in here.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Sunday, January 13, 2008 10:29:08 AM

It seems to be coming from an abyss.

Macallan Sunday, January 13, 2008 4:38:08 PM

The abyss is looking back at you right

Jim BrothertonJaybro Monday, January 14, 2008 11:49:01 AM

Praise Jesus! (my gardener)

A disinterested observation:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/disinterested
Main Entry:
dis·in·ter·est·ed
Pronunciation:
\-təd\
Function:
adjective
Date:
circa 1612
1 a: not having the mind or feelings engaged : not interested <telling them in a disinterested voice — Tom Wicker> <disinterested in women — J. A. Brussel> b: no longer interested <husband and wife become disinterested in each other — T. I. Rubin>
2: free from selfish motive or interest : unbiased <disinterested intellectual curiosity is the lifeblood of real civilization — G. M. Trevelyan>
synonyms see indifferent:-

1: marked by impartiality : unbiased
2 a: that does not matter one way or the other b: of no importance or value one way or the other
3 a: marked by no special liking for or dislike of something <indifferent about which task he was given> b: marked by a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern for something : apathetic <indifferent to suffering and poverty>
4: being neither excessive nor inadequate : moderate <hills of indifferent size>
5 a: being neither good nor bad : mediocre <does indifferent work> b: being neither right nor wrong

Particularly on the point impartiality and lack of selfish motive or interest:
I don't suppose anyone would care to think whether a void in personal motivation necessitates a abysmal lack of concern in all things.

ColinCCVo Thursday, March 5, 2009 7:01:38 AM

P.S.
I couldn't care less, one way or the other, if Australia exists or not.
The matter always was, is and shall forever remain of abysmal unimportance anyhow.

Oh well, maybe the aborigines thought something important about it but nobody else thought it important enough to care.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Thursday, March 5, 2009 8:08:02 AM

Oh, you care!

Sure, but they lived in the dreamtime, and that accounts for the fact that...where was I going with this one?

ColinCCVo Thursday, March 5, 2009 10:38:13 AM

Care? About what?
An abysmal void in our understanding of the 'importance' of our history.
Who invented 'niggers', not to mention the concept of the 'untermensch', anyhow?
Not the British Empire and it's Bastard offspring, by any chance? Sure, the Brits & friends stopped Hitler but:
Who was there to stop the Brits perpetrating the exact same atrocities on a world-wide scale for some 400yrs?

Not that anybody cares to know and not that it makes any difference anyhow.

The Disinterested Observer.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Thursday, March 5, 2009 11:25:46 AM

But the Brits did it to bring civilization to those bereft of it. Fortunately, they lacked German organization and intensity. I have to admit their offspring knew how to shoot straight, though, much to the bad fortune of the Aborigines.

ColinCCVo Thursday, March 5, 2009 11:48:21 AM

Possibly, we might find the beginnings of history not in a void but it's end in an abyss.

Like, anyone cares.

er.. speaking of "a void":
Any chance of avoiding one?

ColinCCVo Thursday, March 5, 2009 11:55:35 AM

"civilization " ha ha
What the FUCK is that?

Jim BrothertonJaybro Thursday, March 5, 2009 12:04:16 PM

Civilization is whatever we choose to define it as of the moment.

My email address is jbrother37@gmail.com

ColinCCVo Thursday, March 5, 2009 1:07:12 PM

"My email address is jbrother37@gmail.com"
So?

"Civilization is whatever we choose to define it as of the moment."

Who, or what, is "we"?

Wee wee wheeeeeeeeeeeee..

Jim BrothertonJaybro Thursday, March 5, 2009 3:37:06 PM

So my email address is jbrother37@gmail.com

That would be 'me', the royal 'me'.

ColinCCVo Saturday, March 7, 2009 2:12:58 AM

I'm rather enjoying the look of this blank void of a text box. I seems such a pity to go and deface it so.

Macallan Saturday, March 7, 2009 2:28:03 AM

If I cared enough I'd say it should be black on black. Or rather, bleak on bleak.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Saturday, March 7, 2009 9:52:01 AM

I can relate because I, too, am a blank void. But who gives a shit?

If I cared, I'd get a "bleak on bleak" tattoo.

Macallan Saturday, March 7, 2009 7:57:30 PM

Just look bleak and nobody will know the difference.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Saturday, March 7, 2009 9:07:03 PM

I already do. And it doesn't bother me at all.

Earlier today my wife told me I looked bleak...was there anything wrong?

I told her thanks and had a beer.

L.A.T.tt92 Friday, October 30, 2009 8:57:37 AM

Is an abyss the head of an abbey?

Or nun of the above.

Jim BrothertonJaybro Friday, October 30, 2009 9:10:49 AM

Macallan Friday, October 30, 2009 11:43:42 AM

The abyss sure looks back at you right

Jim BrothertonJaybro Saturday, October 31, 2009 10:34:47 AM

I've been staring at the abyss for decades. And it's been staring back!

Macallan Saturday, October 31, 2009 11:33:37 AM

You can't win a staring contest with an abyss.
