Traditional Houses in Indonesia

Indonesia is a very large country. It has 17.706 islands. It is devided into 33 provinces to make it easier in governing. More of it, Indonesia has more than 300 different tribes. There are more than 5 official religions and there are of course more religions that are not admited as religion in Indonesia. The geography of Indonesia is very unique. it is Indonesia lies between latitudes 11°S and 6°N, and longitudes 95°E and 141°E.
Indonesia has a motto:

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is the official national motto of Indonesia. The phrase is Old Javanese translated as "Unity in Diversity,".[1] It is inscribed in the Indonesian national symbol, Garuda Pancasila (written on the scroll gripped by the Garuda's claws), and is mentioned specifically in article 36A of the Constitution of Indonesia.
It is a quotation from an Old Javanese poem Kakawin Sutasoma, written by Mpu Tantular during the reign of the Majapahit empire sometime in the 14th century. Kakawin contains epic poems written in metres.
This poem is notable as it promotes tolerance between Hindus (Shivaites) and Buddhists. (wiki)

The Architecture of Indonesia reflects the diversity of cultural, historical and geographic influences that have shaped Indonesia as a whole. Invaders, colonisers, missionaries, merchants and traders brought cultural changes that had a profound effect on building styles and techniques. Traditionally, the most significant foreign influence has been Indian. However, Chinese, Arab—and since the 18th and 19th centuries—European influences have been important. (wiki)

Fascinating, Teresia. I love the houses that are built on piers, with flooring and living spaces beneath them. They look so family-oriented.

A soulful post and it makes me wonder about all that you miss.

TeresiaThere2ia Saturday, October 8, 2011 6:49:48 AM

Star, you are right that the houses are family oriented. Most of the house have place for public and place for family. It means if you visit the family and the family is not familiar to you, then you will be welcomed in the room for public. and if you are part of the family or regarded as part of the family, you can be welcomed in the room for family. Some of tribes make the house for more than one or two families. The family bond is very strong here. smile
Thank you Star for being interested in the culture that I share here smile

Some very pretty houses you guys have built! Nice post. Can I gather that Rumah means house?
Without airconditioning, would the last one be the coolest inside?

You are right, Ben.
The house that you mean belongs to Irian Jaya people. The weather is cold because it is near the Jaya Wijaya mountain. So the house is made of wood without windows and the roof is made of hay or grass to keep the inside warm.

That is surprising - given the location of the country... bigsmile I thought it'd be warm in most places.
I do know Irian Jaya, but am not familiar with the Wijaya mountains... Where are they? Anywhere near the Baliem valey? Or more around Manokwari? I don't remember for sure - there are lakes there in the mountains where the nights were indeed cool when I was there. The Anggi lakes?
Don't worry if you don't know them. It's a big country. I don't know every lake in Europe! bigsmile

Angelliki, you are right. It is sometimes not so easy to deal with as we have some differences in norms and culture. The most important to know and to do is how we can respect one and another. sad and As you see that sometimes we failed to do it in a real life. sad
Thank you for stopping by here smile

studio41 Thursday, October 13, 2011 3:44:00 AM

beauty in diversity in the houses...

and many on stilts, elevated- for flood purposes, I imagine.

TeresiaThere2ia Thursday, October 13, 2011 9:06:31 AM

Jill, if the the houses are on Stilt, it might be also that those areas are swamp area. These traditional houses enrich the Indonesian architectures now days... smile But honestly I am fond of the model of traditional house of Java, Joglo smile

Ben Treinbentrein Thursday, October 13, 2011 10:51:46 AM

In Thailand there are many houses on stilts that are not in swamp areas. The reason - most people tell me here - is to keep away from animals, both domestic and wild. Also, there's quite often flooding; it keeps the feet dry. Thirdly, there's more dust close to the ground in the hot season, making it hotter close to the ground, and thus cooler in the house. And last but not least - it's the easiest cleaning: Keep a few narrow holes between the floor planks, and all you do is sweep the dust and particles through the slits...

Linda, try to have a look on these pictures. and you will be able to imagine how it would be look like. But I can a little describe that we will find first a terrace, where people usually a table and a pair of chairs. Then the next room is living room. Here where the people accept or welcome guest. There will be a set of chairs and a small cupboard where you put some interesting decorations such as, status or ceramics...
