The most obvious, is the way we browse. Most of us, read from left to right, and on a web page we scroll down from top to bottom. Which is why research has shown that the 2 main attention grabbing spots on a web page, are the top left and bottom right of the screen.

But there is a second aspect to "Start at the top, work your way down" principle on the Internet. When we create a space on the web, an online presence, whether it's a website, a blog, a Facebook or Twitter account, we are starting at the top.

That's to say, we have a worldwide presence, accessible by hundreds of millions of people, but unless we are famous like Barack Obama, Nicolas Sarkozy, Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Phil McGraw, or Paris Hilton for example, nobody knows we exist.

It's then up to us, to promote ourselves, or our business, on-line and "filter down" to those hundreds of millions of Internet users. There are dozens of ways to do this, including search engines, pay-per-click advertising, affiliate programs and viral marketing, to name just a few.

That's why, to be successful on the Internet, we start at the top and work our way down!
