Around midnight...

ODict - another Opera

In place of start panel, now we have search panel in 7.50 beta. Build-in search is a powerful feature of Opera, but I wondered how many people were actually using the new panel besides hotclick search and the multiple search field on the address bar or somewhere else... I had it disabled myself but have found a new usage. idea

I recently subscribed to couple of newsgroups and started using KNode (a KDE newsreader) and KMail. Sorry but frankly they are more feature rich and easier to customize than Opera M2 for the moment. And the both applications are now integrated in Kontact, a container, together with Notes, Calender, KWeather etc. It's nice that I can overview all of them in its Summary section. Problem is that I can't use hotclick search while reading articles... Switching between Kontact and Opera (both maximized on my 15" screen) to do a dictionary search is kind of distracting, so I made this.

opera --personaldir odict
Shift+F11 = smallscreen
Right-click the titlebar and check "Keep above others"
Double-click the titlebar to shade it

I have KDict and StarDict in Mandrake but prefer my ODict. bigsmile Please do not remove search panel from 7.50 final...

I confess...New players in MDK 10.1

That looks nice smile

Could you share the toolbar setup for this with use? You could upload it on my.opera.com.

A pity that it is more work for WinOpera users to create special startups. You can start a separate instance with a shortcut command like this:

"c:program filesoperaopera.exe" /settings "c:odictopera6.ini"

.. but then you have to first create the file: 'c:odictopera6.ini' yourself with this minimal content:

Opera Preferences version 2.0
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[User Prefs]
Title=ODict
Opera Directory=C:ODict
Enable DDE=0
;enable DDE makes sure this instance will not be used by other app to show html files

Thank you for the comment. smile I'll upload the toolbar.ini when a detailed description with a dictionary-oriented search.ini is ready on my webspace. It'll take a while... Can I quote your instructions for WinOpera users there?

Rijk Friday, May 14, 2004 4:04:57 PM

Sure, that's all right.

One little correction, the last comment in the ini-file should read:
";'Enable DDE=0' makes sure this instance of Opera will not be used by other apps, ie when clicking a link in your mailer or opening a local html file"

Hi Rijk

I've just uploaded my setup (toolbar and menu) to my.opera.com and added your comments to <A HREF="http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~apricots/opera/odict.html&quot;&gt;my page</A>. Thank you! wink

Thanks to the Rijk's instruction, your toolbar is working properly on windows. Thank you so much for sharing your toolbar.

Corpus is nice! Thank you for letting me know about it. I've added it to my three ini files. smile

I've expanded a little upon your idea, Tricolor. I've added a custom menu.ini, and changed the search button from using search.ini entries to being standalone search buttons. This makes it easier to add any other search engine. I've created a package for Windows with all the necessary files that can be used in this way:

* Unzip this file ...
http://people.opera.com/rijk/opera/fullconfig/ODict.zip
... to "C:ODict"

* Create a shortcut with this command line:
"c:program filesopera7opera.exe" /settings c:Odictopera6.ini

Ready. Adjust the shortcut of course if you installed 7.5 elsewhere. If you choose another directory to unzip the files, you'll have to edit opera6.ini.

Linux and Mac users can of course also make use of the individual files in this zip.

Thank you, Rijk. It's an artwork by a pro! up I'll replace menu.ini on my page with yours and rewrite the setup instructions.

Now that Windows users can use your full package, I'll remake my toolbar.ini for Linux users with my dictionaries. We can't use "Hide ODict" (it's dangerous! devil ) and need "Clear" button because a word is actually copied when it's selected. And I'll add the view button to notes panel and the small screen check box to search panel. They are very nice. Thank you. smile

Rijk,

I've updated my page <http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~apricots/opera/odict.html&gt; and replaced all files with new ones. For the convenience of Linux users, I've uploaded your css and html files there. (I'm sure they won't forget to download your package , though.) If there is any problem about it, please let me know.

With your menu.ini and nice start page, I'm really enjoying ODict. Thank you so much for your work! smile

Can ODict be redesigned as a panel in Opera to make it look like the search panel with search boxes and search engine buttons?
