New players in MDK 10.1

A couple of weeks ago, sort of an announcement was posted to cooker mailing list. It was about default video/music players in the coming Mandrakelinx 10.1.

for KDE: Kaffeine (video) and Juk (music files)
for GNOME: Totem (video) and Rhythmbox (music files)

Totem is already included in 10.0 as the default video player both for GNOME and KDE but I don't like it very much, I'm using Kaffeine most of the time. Juk and Rhythmbox were new to me, so I gave them a try.

I wish I had known Juk earlier... It has a powerful tag editor, "which is able to edit single or multiple files and features things like autocompletion of artist, album and genre names"!! It is part of the kdemultimedia package but was exclueded from Mandrake's KDE 3.2 for some reason.... irked

Rhythmbox gave me a very good first impression. I really like its simple UI and music browser. It also comes with a dozen of preset radio stations. The only thing is, I can't create playlists with two panes open like Zinf.

I also tried Amarok (someone mentioned it in the thread kicked off with the announcement) but uninstalled it after ten minutes or so. Its default look was too gaudy. faint

As expected, the thread went on and on for days. It was funny to see developers getting heated to defend his favorite player like his child. When all was said, the thread starter came in and put an end to the arguments. "And remember, this is only the *default* application. We are not preventing anybody to change it. But we want to get a nice application for newbies." bigsmile

Now I have Kaffeine and Totem for CD&DVD playback, Juk as a tag editor, RealPlayer for WKAR live stream, Rhythmbox for browsing my MP3 library, and Noatun. Noatun is kind of capricious, it sometimes starts only with visualization window bigeyes and I have to delete its configuration file to get it back to normal, but it's my all-time favorite. It plays the best sound for me. Too many players? Maybe, but I'm enjoying the best part of each application. happy

What happened to Zinf? Well, it's not on my machine any more. It suited best for creating playlists but it could not read MP3 tags correctly once edited with Juk! Besides, I went to sourceforge.net and found lots of bugs and feature requests left assigned to nobody for months. Poor Zinf... worried
