The Many Music Career Transitions of Icon Great Kenny Rogers: American Idol 04-05-06

There are nine competitors left for Idol title and it was going to be a night of Country performances. Who better to represent the Country sound but Icon Great Kenny Rogers. Ryan did a good job in giving us Kenny Rogers musical prose and background in country music. Kenny Rogers’s roadmap and journey in his music career is an inspiration in itself. Even before he was Kenny Rogers and the first edition, he had established himself in the music industry as a talent of staying power. Many Kenny Rogers fans still feel today that he has been vastly underrated by the music authorities. To his fans, he is extraordinarily popular, he appeals to all age groups, and to date still sells millions of albums. Kenny Rogers keeps good credible company with other guest appearances such as Wonder and Manilow. I think that American Idol producers are doing a great job in their guest appearance selection. Icons greats like Kenny Rogers who appear on American Idol is a great memorable experience and guidance for the competitors and even for some viewers who may be considering a music career. Kenny Rogers gave honest gentle critique and guidance to the competitors. He pointed out if thought the song or parts of the song was weak. He knew if a competitor was going to struggle with the song or theme, and he also acknowledged if he thought competitors would be able to do more with a song then anticipated.

Ryan makes his presence known on stage and as usual looks good; however, Ryan did not have time to shave. The well-endowed suit and stubby cheeks is just not a match Ryan. It was a night that Ryan traded some grand slam barbs with Simon and that Paula Abdul received the boo nomination! Ryan introduced to the world Simon’s love life and Simon called Ryan a desperate housewife! Randy Jackson looked dapper and spiffy and we saw stars in the audience with Miss Whoppie Goldberg and Jamie Fox. In fact, they should have had Whoppie critique Simon; she would have made mincemeat out of him!

Simon Cowell has gotten himself in a bit of trouble lately when he decided to diss Beyonce Knowles. Simon made a statement that Beyonce is not sexy!!!! Moreover, an average singer! OK, let us separate the wheat from the chaff here; First Simon needs a reality check! Because in the same token Simon is not sexy, he does have a bit of a middle age gut on him! In addition, he is not the most handsome bloke on earth! In comparison to Beyonce who is a beautiful looking sexy woman who does indeed have a mountain of talent in singing and acting and has the staying power required for entertainment. Compare the spice girls talent to Destiny’s child and Beyonce Knowles, there is no comparison that Beyonce and Destiny Child reins supreme. Beyonce Knowles is the full package. Not only should Simon get his head and ears checked, he should get his eyes checked.

It was a night that Simon was even briefly tongue tied, and he related that he did not know what to say. It was also a night the we saw for the very first time Chris Daughtry Rise to the Challenge and show the viewers that alas, Daughtry has a voice and he can sing. For the first time we saw all nine performances based on the theme. It was a night that Paula accused Simon of being a double talker in his critique; to be fair I think that Paula is also guilty of that and so is Randy Jackson. All three judges double talk in their critiques. Just a special note, Simon admits he is no expert on Country music and he does not like Country music, so his critiques are more personal then that of an expert!

First up was Soul Man Taylor Hicks, I continue to love to see Taylor perform. Even on his worst night, he performs and you just cannot help but love this guy! Taylor sang for us John Denver’s “Country Road”. The redundancy of dumb, dumber and dumbest continues: Randy said good song choice! Nevertheless, it was just ok for him! (If you ever notice with Randy, it is always just okor aight)! Paula did not like the song choice and had expected more because Taylor is so full of life, the song did not allow him to shine or electrify the viewers. Simon pit-bull image comes springing out and he asserted that the performance was boring, safe and lazy. I disagree with Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest, I think that Taylor did a excellent job and he at least rises to the occasion each week!

Ryan quipped, safe, boring and lazy, “ladies and gentlemen this is Simon’s love life”. ha ha ,ha, lets give Ryan 100 points for that quip, it was great, I know I enjoyed Ryan’s wittiness.

Mandisa is front and center and sings for us Shania Twain’s “Any man of mine”. Randy said it was a weird song choice for him; it was not hot but showed some personality. Paula did some double-talking and extended that Mandisa can sing the phone book, her voice is amazing, but it was not a good song choice. Simon started growling his discontent and said it was fun and cutesy but he did not like the song choice. I also disagree with dumb ones; Mandisa did a excellent job with the theme on hand.

Elliot Yamin was up to bat next and he sang for us Garth Brooks “If Tomorrow never comes“. Randy loved the performance. Paula loves him and he is a breath of fresh air. Simon thought Elliott was nervous a good song choice but not a great vocal. Again, I disagree Elliott also did an outstanding job.

Baby Paris Bennett is up next who sang Leann Rimes “How do I live”. First, my critique, wow, Paris really hit it out of the ballpark and gave the best performance of the night. She was bang on. Randy (Dumber) said that it was a tough song choice, not good in the beginning but she got it together, it was alight! Paula (dumb) did not feel connected to the song, but Paris is a powerhouse. (Paula was booed at this point) Simon, decides to cash in on the audience’s jeers and boos against Paula, and disagrees with her! He loved the song and it was an excellent song choice. The audience cheers for Simon, who feels redeemed and human! He boosts that he is lovin the transition of who is the most loved Judge. (Feel better now Simon?).

Up on stage base next is Ace Young who sang for us Keith Urban’s “I wanna cry”. Well I was pleasantly surprised at Ace’s performance; he gave an excellent, outstanding performance. Randy was bored, nice song but did not bring out Ace’s personality. Paula trying to redeem herself with the audience now disagreed with Randy and felt that Ace picked the right song choice to go along with his vocals. Simon eating up the audience cheers and craving for more shed his pit-bull image and said that in the past Ace had not chosen the right song but tonight he has and it was very good. Simon is cheered and Simon grins at Paula and Randy!

Next up was that Vixen Kellie Pickler who sang Reba McIntyre’s “Fancy”. Randy eager to give brownie points to Miss Thing, said that Kellie is in her element and he thought it was great. Paula gave a pass with a good song choice. Great night for her. Simon looking flushed as he always does around Kellie (sad isn't it to see a grown middle age man so smitten with a young lass, that he is all tongue-tied). Simon said, that it could not go wrong for Kellie tonight, he hated the song (sureeeeeee you did Simon) but her performance was good.

Next up was Mr. Rise to the challenge Chris Daughtry. Now I know some have said Chris bombed, but I have to give the man his props and due. At least he tried, and overall he did not sound too bad. Obviously Chris is out of his comfort zone, but the fact is he at least tried it. I know by the look on Chris’s face, he hated every minute of his performance, he can be comforted in knowing, that we the fans enjoyed the change in his performance. Randy, emphasized so we could all be reminded that every week Chris did his rocker thang! This week we saw a different side of Chris, Randy then got all emotional, as he tends to do with Rockers and said good job he enjoyed it. “I’ll rock to that Randy”! Paula not wanting to be outdone said that he showed versatility but he stayed true to himself, (talk about doubletalk) Um Paula, he could not of showed versatility and stayed true to his rock roots! Simon who hates country music said it was great to see this side of Chris, but all the competitors choose boring, uninteresting songs and he felt the home audience deserved more then that. (Awww Simon, for a brief shiny moment, you were loved globally!)

Next up was Katherine McPhee who sang Faith Hill is “Bringing out the Elvis”. Katherine started out strong , started slipping in the middle but gave a good finish. Randy liked the song. Paula thought Katherine had found her niche. Simon thought that the performance was weird he did not like it. Katherine responded to Simon” just admit it, you don’t like country music”! Simon did owe up to this fact. 100 points for Katherine for challenging Simon’s critique and making him owe up to the fact he does not like Country. You go girl!

Closing the show was Mr. Sweetness Bucky Covington. I like Bucky; he is refreshing in his nativity! Bucky sang for us Gary Allen’s “Best I ever had”. Randy thought it was aight. Paula thought he was in his element and he shone in his performance. Simon exerted that he was not an expert in this kind of music it sounded ok to him!

The best performances of the night: 1. Paris 2. Elliott 3. Taylor 4. Chris Daughtry (I have to give him a rating today, based on the fact he rose to the challenge).

The worst performances of the night: 1. Kelly Pickler 2. Katherine McPhee

Who will be going home tonight after America votes: Kellie Pickler( just because I think she is losing her country charm with American Idol fans).

The dumbest award goes to Paula for saying that Simon double-talks in his critques which she also does.

The Dumber award goes to Randy: He is aight, just not hot in his critique.

The Dumb award goes to Simon: For commenting on the performances and admitting that, he does not like country music.

Special Dumbest Award goes to Simon Cowell. For the Beyonce Knowles crack.

Special good guy Award goes to Ryan Seacrest: for getting the best of Simon.

Kenny Rogers will be peforming for us tonight, I look forward to this as do many fans!
