It’s all about the Vocals Man. 3/28/07- American Idol
By Truth Is Pagan Media That Bites. Wednesday, 28. March 2007, 18:52:42
What has went wrong with American Idol this year? Why are we fooling ourselves? American Idol has the ten top finalists? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Most of them are terrible and most of them believe you don’t have to have a great voice and it is not about bringing it? It is about personality, character and the proverbial words we keep hearing this season “HAVING FUN”! Come on now; give us a rather large break. Feed that to those few who would foolishly believe that. Personality, Character and even the Charm of Sanjaya will not sell records, it’s all about the Vocals MAN! Who is going to buy records of someone that is a lousy singer. Sorry I know I won’t. I mean really your average Joe and Jane could get up there and start singing out of tune and have the most pleasant and stand out character in the world, are you going to buy their records. Only if your tone deaf!

Out swaggers Ryan looking excited with anticipation. He lies to us once more and tells us we are in for an outstanding night. We get Gwen Stefani’s intro and music bio. We even got Gwen to critique the top ten, not that her advice could really save those that lack the talent and vocals to be in the competition. Gwen at least tried to give some good advice to the top ten, which is a rarity with the judges! Thank- Goodness for Gwen if she hadn’t tried to lead the top ten, last night’s peformances would of been worse then what is was!
Lakisha was up first, Gwen Stefani was blown away by her dynamic affective clear voice. Gwen thought she should be asking Lakisha for advice. Lakisha sings Donna Summer’s “ Last Dance”. Randy said, liked the up-tempo beat and that she was a true fly diva, she was hot and he loved the boots. Paula said, she did Donna Summer Proud and Simon said, it was great, she was 30 years younger this week, she put her mark back on the competition and he loved the boots. It was a good thing that Lakisha opened the show, I might have switched the channel if she or the other front runners didn’t open the show.Chris Sligh- didn’t do so well this night. Gwen thought that Chris needed to concentrate on the beat. Chris sang the Police’s “ Every little thing you do is magic”. I thought it was boring, bland and out of Chris’s reach vocally. Randy said, Good song choice? ( Again Randy seems to be deaf) but rhythmical the band is in 1 tempo and Chris is in another he never got into the pocket? And it was a train wreck for Randy. Paula said, it was vocally nice( she must have been sleeping during the performance because I winched when I heard him sing), and he needs to stay in pocket. Simon who couldn’t contain himself for a minute longer said, he thought it was a mess ( amidst the boo’s in the crowd) Simon almost shouted, it was, it was a mess! How was he to get fun out of it? ( I don’t know, put on ear muff’s perhaps?) It was not representative of Chris, Simon said!
Gina Glocksen, did much better this week and her performance was enjoyable. Gwen thought that she did a great job with the emotions of the song. Gina sang, the pretender’s “ I’ll stand by you”, however the original artist was by Shirley Bassey.
Randy thought it was her best performance ever, she just needed to believe, choose wise songs, it was very nice and he loved the fly boots. Paula thought she soared with her vocals. Simon thought it was not just her best performance, it was the best performance of the night so far. It was all about choosing the right songs.
Sanjaya Malakar, who is starting to foolishly believe he has a shot at reaching the finals has now become huffy and cocky. Sanjaya’s cockiness reminds me of last year’s Kevin Covais, who went from cute and we adore him to cocky. That was part of Kevin’s undoing and it will be part of Sanjaya’s undoing. Not to mention the fans of those “ better talents who have been ousted, have to go somewhere and have not taken kindly to having to listen to the obvious that Sanjaya is devoid of talent.” He can’t sing, it is as simple as that and no hairdo or the seven wonders, prayers ECT can help him! Need you ask how Sanjaya did? As usual he was lousy, out of tune, off-key, horrible, as usual he bombed. Gwen was struggling to say something kind about Sanjaya, but really what could she say without lying! She just wished him luck! Randy was speechless and thought it was an interesting hairdo. Randy then says with discovery in his voice, “ you actually can sing”! ( get Randy a hearing aid). Paula coached Sanjaya and told him to go for it! Yes go for it! Come on she said, you can do it? ( ok) Simon was trying to make light of a bad performance, offered, that he assumed that Sanjaya didn’t have a mirror in his dressing room and that he was in his own Universe. Sanjaya tries to confront Simon and only comes across as cocky. ( I think Sanjaya just fell from the Universe and off his high horse)!
Haley Scarnato sang Cyndi Laupers “ True Colors”. Haley was very boring and even her very short dress could not spice it up for us, she is one of the competitors that can put you to sleep. Gwen thought she did really great. Randy said, it was a little rough( a little, I would say there were tons of roughness in her vocals). It was pitchy, it just didn’t grab him but it was aight. Paula thought it was pretty good and she was a pretty girl. ( Paula’s lifeline when she can’t find something good to say). Simon asked her “ how do you think you did”? Simon goes on, it was sweet but forgettable, there was nothing to remember in her performance, she played it to safe and she would have to do better then that.
Phil Stacey sang the Police’s “ Every breath you take”. Gwen thought Phil would do great if he focused. Phil has not convinced me yet that he has talent, he lull’s you into a trance and has your mind drifting with his singing. Randy thought it was a solid performance. Paula thought it was a good choice and that he played it safe until he got to the chorus. Simon who looked like he was just woken up, thought it was very good, and it was the only time in the competition that he thought Phil was taking it seriously and that he now realizes Phil is trying to do well.
Melinda sang, Donna Summer “ Heaven knows” As usual Melinda did not fail, she did a beautiful outstanding job and showed the power in her talent, her vocals and that she is a star! Gwen said that Melinda blew her way and she would say good luck but she didn’t think Melinda needed it. Randy thought that Melinda sang and performed like a pro and that she was living the words of the songs she sings. He offered that is what a pro does. She was da bomb again. Paula thought she was classic, fun and it was joyful when she sang. Simon thought it was vocally outstanding but he hated the outfit. ( heh, heh, as if Simon Cowell is the authority on fashion).
Blake Lewis gave us another boring performance. Blake is counting on his cuteness to get him through the competition instead of his talent. He is just an average singer so far in this competition. He needs to raise the bar and take some risks if he doesn’t he will be out, but hopefully only after Sanjaya. Randy said, it was not a perfect song choice but Blake made the most of it, Randy was not jumping up and down with the performance. Paula has the new lad to cling onto as she does every year. She said, that Blake was the dark horse and she would LOVE to see in the finals”. Um Paula , must we go through this with you every year! You were doing so well this year to! First of all this doesn’t say much for the front runners of the competition. Why not tell Phil or Chris S or Chris R the same thing ( what’s the matter they are not cute enough for you)! Grow up, Paula!
Simon thought that Blake was the best guy in the competition. ( I beg to differ, Chris Sligh is the front running guy in the competition).
Jordan Sparks, didn’t do as well this week in her song choice, however, she managed to bring it and pull it off and she has a great voice, she can be star material, by being able to do that. Jordan sang, “ No Doubts”, Hey Baby”. Gwen thought that Jordan made it more musical then Gwen thought the song was. Randy thought it was very risky song to do, but she could literally sing anything. Paula who was still gushing over Blake, thought it was adorable. Simon thought, Jordan was the most improved performance in the competition, but it was a bit copy cattish!( a new word for Simon).
Closing the show was Chris Richardson who sang, No Doubt’s, “ Don’t speak” Gwen thought Chris should stick to the melody and focus on the song. Randy thought it was interesting and he liked the flavour and twists on it. That Chris has an R & B side. Paula said. Very good! ( what Paula, no bows and arrows for Chris)! Simon said, it was a much better song choice, that he didn’t like the vocals and thought Chris struggled through the song.
Mercifully the show ends and we could all stop playing with our TV volumes.
