GIS, web
Like many others who have been experimenting with Microsoft's latest version (V3) of their Virtual Earth control, I am suitably impressed! Not only do we get the ability to create a fully functional web map in just a few lines of javascript, but the UK now features the excellent Millennium Map aerial imagery from
Getmapping. This of course means that many people in Great Britain can finally "see their house", something that those in the US have long had the ability to do with Google Maps. In addition, the Bird's Eye view opens up a fascinating new dimension to geographic locations. Of course, this becomes an enabler for many practical business applications (such as real-estate searches), as well as the ubiquitous mash-ups.
GeoRSS functions well as a simple mechnism for displaying pushpins. I can imagine a time when all news RSS feeds will be geocoded for display in this way. In the mean time, please take a look at my
news map demo using the new Virtual Earth control within DotNetNuke, combining RSS feeds from Reuters, the BBC and Yahoo, and geocoded through the
Geonames RSS-to-GeoRSS converter.
