Rainy days and Mondays always get me to thinking...

, , , ...

A rainy Monday, reminds me of England (one of the reasons I left).
Watched my beloved Raiders lose again last night to the hated Bronco's, maybe we will lose all our games this year... well it's something to strive for.
Portsmouth (Soccer) and the Razorbacks (college football) won this weekend so it's not all doom and gloom, but is it asking too much for all 3 to win every weekend? I don't think so.
I wonder what it's like for a team you support to actually win something (not the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl). I was thinking... I support 3 teams... Portsmouth, my local soccer team from England, for over 30 yrs, the Oakland Raiders since 1984 and my adopted Arkansas Razorbacks since 2000, you would think somewhere along the line one of those would pop up and win something just one time, nope, never happened.
Portsmouth have not won a major trophy since the second world war (1948/49), a little before my time, they continue to do well in the top division but it's been over 50 yrs since the last big one.
The Raiders... I have supported them from the time I watched a game in 84' when I saw James Garner aka Jim Rockford, on the sidelines cheering them on, The Rockford Files was my favorite program when I was a kid so I thought, "If they are good enough for Jim, they are good enough for me."
They had just won the previous Super Bowl and were the 'winningiest team in professional sports', I was onto a surefire winner here, right? Well 22 yrs later, one Superbowl appearance (we were killed by Tampa Bay) and the only team without a win this season (actually lost 11 in a row so far).
The Razorbacks, currently 13th in the latest BCS standings, wow! that's amazing, but the last decent bowl game they won was on Jan 1st 2000, the cotton bowl against Texas, 11 weeks before I arrived in town! Could this be the year? I still live in hope. Could it be I am just bad luck? I don't think so, these things tend to turn around at some point, right? "Remember the Red Sox" I keep telling myself, they waited over 80 yrs, right, well I'm only half way there with Portsmouth so I shouldn't really complain. I just apologise to all the Raider and Razorback fans, don't hold your breath waiting too long for that championship...

Friday 13th...

,

One of my favorite days.
Being a huge fan of the horror genre I grew up watching as many horror movies as I could get my hands on, and anyone who has done the same thing will also testify to having to sit through some utter garbage to uncover those hidden gems.
The usual suspects of course: Friday 13th, Halloween, The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, The Omen but also lesser known gems: Driller Killer, Last House on the Left, I Spit On Your Grave, Zombie Flesh Eaters, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre(original), SS Experiment Camp & The Evil Dead to name just a few.
I hear they are bringing back Halloween this year at the movie theater, these kind of movies are always worth watching on the big screen.
Take my word for it, pop down to your local theater, get a huge bag of popcorn and beverage of your choice, bring a date, and enjoy... you will love it.
Damn... I have to go, a teller is waving furiously at me and I can ignore her no longer, someone wants to apply for a credit-card, my day is now complete.
I will catch up with you later.
