Heronry Report 1

, , , , , , , , , ,

I thought I might start posting about the progress of the nesting Grey Herons at the heronry in Regents Park, London. ALthough there was not much activity today. Just 3 adults standing in a nest each and preening.
There were none down on the ground in the usual area either. Hopefully there busy feeding up getting ready for courting, mating and icubation etc.

There were other birds about however:

The coots were up to there usual aggressive antics - in fact asplit second after i took this shot all hell broke loose, but of course calmed down before I was ready (or rather my camera sad) for another shot.

Also about was this nice male pochard

and this male red-crested pochard

I wandered over to the bridges at the west end of the lake where this moorhen was sunbathing

And there were 3 male wood ducks swimming round - but as always with this species for some reason, the light (even on a bright sunny day like today) wasn't good enough/camera wouldn't focus when it was in the sun. Its my jinx species! sad bigsmile I did get one half decent shot though

Also present was this lovely male pintail

accompained by this female pintail

The male at a couple of points started flapping his wings and ai got a few half decent shots of this

Someone was also feeding the 'ducks' alothough no one told these black headed gulls!

On the way out I encountered this rather obliging Juvenile gull, which Im reasonably sure is a herring gull.

And last but not least, what I believe is a common gull, which will be a first photo and first definate common gull for me - if it is one!

All in all a good lunch hour smile

Another nice selection. Coots are one of those birds with a surprising mean streak wink and the sunbathing moorhen is great.
