Bushy Park: coots on ice

, , , , ,

More from Bushy Park, this time the the coots on the Model Boating Pond, which as you will see was of no use to model boaters that day. In fact pretty much the whole lake was covered in ice, but the coots, with their large feet, didn't seem to troubled

One seemed quite content to just sit on the ice!

But there was some feeding going on

This one obviously hadn't heard the stories about tongues getting stuck to ice!

The bright conditions make photographing an black bird with a white beak a bit tricky, but they help with reflections in the ice

The last photo seem ripe for a caption like "God, what have this humans been throwing on to the ice!"

Hello and welcome to the UK WILDLIFE BLOGBushy Park: Mute Swans

Lovely series of photos!

Great shots. I think the Coot is often ignored. I quite like the way they bob around poking at things. Yours are a bit different than ours. Ours don't have red eyes, (I don't think).
It seems to be a world wide passion for kids to throw junk on an ice covered pond!

Cakkleberry - Thanks

RobinL - Im not sure what species you have there. I don't really notice our coots red eye except in photos

I'm definitely beginning to take to coots. That's a great series of shots. The blue ice is perfect for them. Love the second shot especially... that careful stepping out pose... one step... two step...

Mark - there feest are great. When their chicks the feest look far to big for them!

Words - Im a bit of a fan. Partly because they're so aggressive with each other, you can always see some action when theres a group on a lake!
Thanks, I like the first one best. I got lucky as the softer winter light helped me when compensating the black bodies and white beak.

adele - cheers
