Hares, waders and other birds at Elmley

, , , , , , , , , , , ,

Carrying on from my last post, where I had just reached the actually RSPB reserve. We checked out most the hides and saw very little, nothing close enough to photograph. So we then head to far hide that was a fair old distance away. When we arrived we looked out over Windmill creek and there was a flock of Knots nearby

There were some smaller dunlin there to (the small wader on the right)

The flock then took of and moved further along the Swale

Walking back we came across a male pheasant

On the return walk we passed the hides again and had little luck until we got back to the first hide again. To start with there was nothing there but then a curlew landed right in front of the hide and moved into the sun

It then walked over to the nearest island

Before walking across the scrape towards the back

When then went up to the next hide, which we had skipped the first time round. Apart from some distant teals and a pheasant there wasn't much to see at first, which was a shame with the evening sunlight coming from behind. But then a furry creature appeared

My first hare in over 10 years!:D

The brown hare then ran across the grass towards the fence in front of me

Before squeezing under the fence

And trotting off into the nearby vegetation.

We waited to see it it would reappear and I did see it run along the other side of the vegetation but it didn't show as well again. The earlier mentioned pheasant reappeared again

The walk and following drive out was rather good too: I saw 5 more hares, my first ever red legged partridges, a few pipits and loads more pheasants. A good day

Good photos, all. I love the pheasant.

Fabulous! I love hares but haven't seen any in the south east (they're obviously widespread in Norfolk, but hard to approach). Excellent shots of one of our most beautiful species

I would love to get a photo of a pheasant like that.
