2009 highlights

I thought I'd have a quick look back at the highlights of last year, which had quite a few! My visit in January to a very frosty Bushy Park was quite fruitful, wth some nice 'coots on ice' photos

Later in the month I had a chance close encounter with a kingfisher

And the snow in February created some great photo opportunities, not least this tame redwing

The start of the year also included the two days of my mammals course at wildwood, which included seeing my first ever dormouse

In early march there was the frog spawning

And the heron eating frogs in Richmond Park

And finally finding my local adders

There was the toads breeding in Bedfords Lake

My first ever pill millipede

A trip to Wicken Fen gave m my first views of quite a few orchids and other flowers, as well as my fist hen harrier

June brought some stag beetles to my garden

Which was when I was playing with my first DSLR smile Its fist real outing ended with me finding this cygnet and swan

A few days after I was off to Strumpshaw Fen to see the norfolk hawkers and swallowtail butterflies

Towards the end of June was my trip to Pembrokeshire and Skomer

July was relatively quiet except for the scarce damselfly at Wat Tyler

In August a trip to Thursley resulted in lots of dragon and damselflies, green tiger beetle, raft spiders and this hornet robberfly

A birthday trip to Rainham resulted in my best ever little grebe photos

September brought the wheatears to two tree island

And my first flycatcher

Along with a trip to newforest with crossbills and a golden ringed dragonfly

The last of 2009's dragonflies gathered in a sun trap one day at Wat Tyler CP

In October I headed to Richmond Park for the deer rut

and I got some nice photos of the skylarks at reculver

November at Hanningfield I saw a goldcrest close up

A couple of trips to Elmley Marshes gave me my best curlew photos

I got my best nuthatch at Bedfords Park

The seals at Donna Nook were a major highlight

A trip to Reculver yeilded some wader photos as well as a tame kestrel

In December a trip to Farlington Marshes resulted in some nice photos of the Brent Geese

And the recent snow created more photo ops

And just after xmas a trip to Elmley resulted in a photo of a marsh harrier

A wonderful year's worth of pictures Neil. These are worthy of a Tabletop Book. The seal and the cygnet stuck in my head, but they are all great photos. Hope you have as good or better a year in 2010.

Sam writes: An absolutely fantastic collection of photographs! I hope I have even nearly as good a 2010 as your 2009. I've only just found your blog, which looks to be covering similar ground to my own, though my photographic exploits pale in comparison. I've linked to this article. Let me know if that's not OK: http://www.uknatureblog.com/2010/01/2009-photo-highlights-courtesy-of-neil.html
