Lesser spotted woodpecker nest

On Monday I got a tip off there was a Lesser Spotted woodpecker nest up near the visitor centre at Bedfords Park and having never had a 100% definate, let alone good sighting or photo, of the species I headed straight up there. When I arrived a chick was calling from the hole.

But there was no sign of the parents for a good hour, but then mum appeared.

followed soon after by dad.

I managed to get a few sequences of the chick(s) being fed, of which this was the best.

There were a few other things about. This kestrel hovered high above the nest hole as I waited.

Down by the lake a black tailed skimmer sunbathed on the bank.

And a male broad bodied cahser dragonfly was guarding his territory: one of the new ponds dug as part of the million ponds project.

Great stuff! Not only a sighting but feeding the young as well. That's what I call a result. bigsmile

Neil, great shots of the Woodpeckers. They are very similar to our Downey Woodpeckers.
