Phantom midge larva - brilliant bit of Evolution

, ,

phantom midge larva 3
These guys have evolved a rather excellent way of catching their prey. The 'fang' at the front is actually its antennae that have evolved into this claw like arm which it uses to grab it prey. But evn more clever is the shiny slver oragn behind the head. There is another towards the rear of the body too and these work like submarine ballast tanks so the larva can float up or down towards a water flea/Daphnia without giving away its presence by wriggling its body and is so able to sneak up (or down) on its prey. Evolution comes up with some brilliant outcomes

Mediterranean gulls, kittiwakes, black headed gulls and turnstones at Southend Pier

, , ,

On Monday I had a leiu day to use up and the weather was looking good so I headed to Southend. I had a quick look for 'Rossi' the ring billed gull with no luck and headed along the seafront to the pier. I past a few brent geese and the odd turnstone among the gulls. There was a large gathering of gulls around the start of the pier but no mediterranean among them that I could see. So I walked for the 1+ mile to the end of pier. Here I came across the Mediterranea gulls.

Holey beak

Not the best photo, but here is something that I noticed today. You can see through one nostril and out the other on at least some swans.

Blackbird and Waxwing

, , , ...

On thursday I went to look for the waxwings at Pitsea Aldi. There were none to be seen for a while but 2 redwings turned up. I snuck up using the car as a hide, just in time for someone to to walk past and scare them off! Doh!

Still, I managed this pic of a blackbird.

In the end 1 lonely waxwing turned up and posed for a photo before flying off.
