A walk through Romfords Parks

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I had a half day yesterday and rather than go Regents park again, I decided to have a walk around my usual haunts and do some recording for the East London bird forum. First stop was Raphaels Park where as I entered I saw a pair of Great crested grebes performing courtship - the phase where they swim so fast that their body rises completely out of the water, at an angle of 45 degrees. Of course I didn't get any photographs of it... But there was another grebe who was more co-operative:

Then, just as I was wondering what the odds were on seeing displaying grebes two days running, I then saw a cormorants swimming close to the lake shore, or the second time in two days. What are the odds of seeing grebes displaying and a cormorant close up in 2 different places, in 2 consecutive days!?
I then wandered up across the football fields and saw a small flock of redwings, too far away to get decent shots off, but a nice first, in this park at least, for me.
I then headed to Rise park where I had a good look at the flock of gulls on the football fields there. And I noticed that a lot were not Black headed gulls. In fact they were common gulls. A species I had only identified for the first time a week or so ago and here they were in my local haunt. This species is reasonably common around the coast but recently has been found increasingly inland. Then some began to throw food and the black headed gulls didn't hesitate and took to the air to get there share
I then headed on to Bedfords Park where I saw this lovely green woodpecker, feeding from the ground as they usually do.
The red deer were more active than the last I saw them. Two were even 'rutting'and here they are after there half hearted rutting

And to finish off, in the vistor centre one of the staff had just got a new toy: a cuddly woodlouse

The wildwood photos are processed and will be put up soon, along with (hopefully) an article on scorpionflies)
